It creates memories, eases conversation and stimulates idea. Grab a cup of joe and learn more about our ten favorite coffee shops around the world.

Colectivo Coffee: Madison, Wisconsin
What began as Alterra Coffee in 1993 with the simple goal of making a great cup of coffee is now a local favorite in Trek Travel’s hometown. Colectivo Coffee, whose name and design are inspired by the funky buses used for everyday public transportation across Latin America, is our staff’s favorite place to grab a cup of carefully brewed single origin coffee on the way to work. Appropriately named, the shop strives to be part of everyday life through the products they make, the places they build, the communities they support, and the customers they serve. After just one visit you will quickly realize that the rich flavors of their “Featured Farm Series” are merely part of the collective experience, as their open storefront on Madison’s capitol square provides the perfect atmosphere to share great conversation with peers after a Saturday morning ride.
 

 
La Fabrica: Girona, Spain
Walking the streets of pretty little Girona, Spain you will find a gem of a coffee shop tucked away near the center of town, off the beaten path. Newly opened La Fabrica Coffee Works & Cycle Café is owned by a couple from Vancouver, Canada. Inspired by coffee cultures from around the world, they bring cycling and coffee to Girona in their own way. The finished product is amazing, to say the least, and has quickly become a guide favorite! Colleagues and I discovered La Fabrica online a few Sundays ago while looking for a place to watch the Tour of Flanders race on television. Picture exposed stone, modern yet cozy design, family-style seating and walls displaying photos of past cycling legends. Local cycling enthusiasts fill the café to enjoy coffee with new and old friends. Meanwhile the aroma of freshly roasted beans fills the air with the sound of clacking cycling cleats and churning espresso machines in the background. From freshly roasted coffee, to the friendliest of service, this place is our little slice of heaven. The best part? Upon finishing your café con leche you will see the word ‘ANOTHER?’ on the bottom of your cup. Great minds think alike. The answer is always si.

Handlebar Coffee Roasters: Santa Barbara, California
When former professional cyclists shifted their focus, training and determination from racing to coffee, the result was a world-class micro roaster in Santa Barbara’s “Gourmet Ghetto.” While living and racing in Europe, Aaron Olson and Kim Andersen fell in love with the abundance of local, neighborly cafes. Upon their return to the States, they decided to bring that same ambiance to a coffee shop of their own. What they created is a streamlined space just off State Street where they proudly display their two passions side-by-side: custom Handlebar cycling jerseys together with a German-made Probat roaster. Though recently expanded to keep up with booming demand, the natural light and outdoor patio present the exact tone they were striving for—warm and unpretentious.

Tahoe House: Tahoe City, California
While living in Lake Tahoe and working remotely for Trek Travel, I would spend at least two days per week at the Tahoe House. Not only is their coffee the best in town—with a perfect crema every time—but it is also one of the last true “Mom and Pop” operations around. Originally from Switzerland, Peter and Helen Vogt brought with them a love of European Style breads and pastries. The couple opened the Tahoe House in May of 1977, and from a young age Peter and Helen’s girls helped out in the restaurant. As they grew older, Barbara went to culinary school and Caroline studied restaurant management. These days Barbara and Caroline are running the show. Stop by on your way to the mountain for a cup of brewed-to-order Swiss coffee and a pastry baked fresh that morning.

Mudtruck: New York City, New York
In the growing trend of food carts, the Mudtruck adds convenience for those needing their daily caffeine fix, making stops in several key locations around New York City. Its signature bright orange color can be seen from far away, and when I’d catch a glimpse of it coming out of the subway on my way to work, it meant I was going to have a great day. The beauty is in its simplicity, with most orders being “Mud”—simple, black coffee with milk and sugar. Even if you drink your coffee black, try it with the milk and sugar. The key is that they make your drink café au lait-style, steaming the milk first and adding just the right amount of sugar to turn your coffee into a frothy, smooth cup of goodness packed with quite a punch of caffeine. They do all of this for under $2 a cup, so you can justify indulging on a daily basis.
 

 
10 Speed Coffee: Calabasas, California
How do you judge your favorite coffee shop? Great coffee is obviously a must, but great coffee alone doesn’t make a coffee shop great. I’ve sipped coffee in shops and cafés on four continents, and one stands out above the rest. Tucked off a highway exit in Calabasas, California, the crew at 10 Speed Coffee serves up a great cup of coffee to fuel a drive up the 101 or a delicious espresso to cap off an amazing meal at their Pedalers Fork restaurant. These guys also share a passion for cycling, operating a high-end bike shop in the back of the restaurant and sponsoring some of the biggest bike races in the United States. Whether sitting at their coffee bar in California or on the bumper of their truck on a mountaintop in Colorado, a cup of Kickstand blend makes me feel at home.

Slate Coffee Bar: Ballard, Washington
Living in Seattle, and working for the last decade in Italy, have dealt a one-two punch of epic, coffee-snobbery. While in Italy, the perfect macchiato can be had at any roadside gas station, I have not found this to be true stateside. I am lucky to have good friends who are the head roasters for two shops I enjoy very much—Victrola Coffee in Seattle and Boxcar Coffee Roasters in Boulder, Colorado—and yet, my vote for favorite coffee shop goes to Slate Coffee Bar in Seattle. Here, the coffee is more than just a beverage. It is an experience that will likely be the highlight of your day. The care and attention that the owner, Chelsey, puts into every detail of your coffee—with a special emphasis on crafting your drink—comes through in the final product. This place was so hot that when it first opened, there was a lineup of well-trained baristas knocking down the door offering to apprentice—for free—just to learn the finer nuances of the highest level of coffee. When you go, be sure to try the deconstructed cappuccino, which features a shot glass of perfectly pulled espresso, a small tumbler of micro-frothed milk (from local, happy grass-fed, hormone free cows), followed by a marriage of the two ingredients, and…I dare say, the most perfect cappuccino.

Northwest Coffee Roasting: St. Louis, Missouri
The one place to sip a cup of joe that is etched in my mind is Northwest Coffee Roasting in the West End of St. Louis. Picture this: old garage, set back about 100 feet from a quiet residential street, concrete countertops, local artwork covering the walls, a cork board with ads and cards for nearly everything the locals are peddling, a long rustic portico with chairs and tables giving it an earthy, open air simplicity rich of the aroma from the beans roasted daily inside. I’ve been frequenting this place for over 10 years, before they were open 7 days a week, when it was only one guy. I don’t go there for the espresso (although it’s killer!). I go there for a good old-fashioned cup of coffee served in a stout little mug. It’s smooth, rich, definitely well balanced, not a hint of char or burnt-ness, super consistent, heart-racing coffee, and about as fresh as you can get because the beans are roasted in front of your eyes. Don’t even get me started on the scones. Get there early if you want to try them, or I may have already taken the last one…
 

Angry Catfish: Minneapolis, Minnesota
For me it is everything a cyclist looks for in a coffee shop. First: Amazing coffee. I’m a huge fan of Intelligentsia which is brewed at the Angry Catfish. Second: Their baristas are awesome and pull some amazing shots. Third: But perhaps the best thing about the Angry Catfish is that it is primarily an amazing bike shop. They have amassed some of the most knowledgeable bike mechanics around and they are all just really great guys. The atmosphere there is pretty calm, great seating areas to hunker down and read a book, or catch up on the latest road disc whohaa’s. Definitely a place to visit if you are ever in the Twin Cities!

Verve Coffee Roasters: Santa Cruz, California
A good cup of coffee is about more than just the flavor, and no one gets that more than Verve. They are involved in their beachfront Santa Cruz neighborhood, where surfing is as important as roasting. They are connected with the farms in rural Kenya and Costa Rica, where they source the best green coffee. They are committed to their award winning baristas, who take pride in the meticulous cupping process. And they are invested in their customers, who line up for the experiment each morning. If you like your coffee sweet and your environment laid-back, Verve is the cafe for you.
 





Guest Choice: Yountville

The Town of Yountville, renowned for its world-class restaurants and award-winning chefs, has earned the unofficial title of “Culinary Capital of the Napa Valley.”

Though small enough to walk from end to end, there are more Michelin-stars within the confines of this small town than anywhere in the world. This culinary prowess is coupled with spectacular wineries, thriving shops and a world-class art community to create an unforgettable experience. What To Do: Spa Villagio
A short walk from your hotel for the night, Spa Villagio is the perfect place to reflect on the day’s 30-mile ride to Summit Lake Vineyards. This ultimate luxurious escape is best known for their private spa suites crafted with your choice of scents, sound, refreshments and treatments. We, however, recommend booking an individual service or spending time in the sauna, steam room and soaking baths. Where To Go for Dessert: Bouchon Bakery
No, we’re not crazy. There’s a reason we’re talking about dessert before dinner. As you walk one half mile down Yountville’s Washington Street from Spa Villagio to the French Laundry, you cannot pass the Bouchon Bakery without walking inside. Originally conceived to provide his restaurants with one-of-a-kind breads, Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery quickly blossomed into an important retail establishment in its own right. Stop in before doors close at 7:00 PM to pick up a French-inspired pain au chocolat or brightly-colored macaroon. Although your taste buds probably can’t resist, try to save your mouth-watering treat for the perfect after-dinner delight.

Where To Go For Dinner: French Laundry
To top off a night of indulgence, chef Thomas Keller’s French Laundry is the ultimate destination for fine French cuisine in the Napa Valley. The only American-born chef to have two three-starred Michelin restaurants, Keller cut his teeth working in a Palm Beach restaurant managed by his mother. Now consistently recognized by respected media outlets such as the James Beard Foundation and Culinary Institute of America, the creations of this award-winning chef are guaranteed to satisfy your palate. Guest Choice: Greenville

In the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains lies Greenville, South Carolina. What was once the best-kept secret of pro cyclists is now a trending destination due to epic climbs, stunning views, and pristine country roads.

But it is more than just gorgeous terrain that lands Greenville a spot on almost every list of best cities and top destinations. Visitors can make it their mission to find all nine Mice on Main while they choose from more than 100 delicious restaurants, or escape to the Reedy River after taking in all the delightful shops and art attractions in town. Although you’re likely to be tired after riding the roads that the pros train on, we recommend taking an evening to discover the Southern charm that has everyone talking about Greenville, South Carolina.

Our Santa Barbara weekend bike tour offers four full days of cycling, sightseeing, dining, hiking, and relaxing along the California Coast.

With a home base in downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll enjoy easy access to the shops, cafes, museums, and bars of famous State Street. Where To Go For Social Hour: Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company
Though California is best known for wine, you can’t miss the Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company while you’re in town. A favorite of Trek Travel and staple in the local beer scene, the brewery is located just off State Street within walking distance of your hotel. Started by Jim and Jamie Dietenhofer, a father and son team, the beer produced here recently won Gold and Silver medals at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival and the ‘Hoppy Poppy’ Double IPA is one of our Top 10 Beers in the World.

Where To Go For Dinner: The Lark
After you enjoy a cold one at Fig Mountain, walk next door to The Lark for a dining experience that won’t disappoint. The menu features locally sourced artisanal and seasonal ingredients, and the food is served family style to share with new friends on your trip. Located in the heart of Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone, a vibrant arts district and home to local surf shops, galleries and the popular Urban Wine Trail, take advantage of The Lark’s exterior dining space to fully enjoy your surroundings.

What To Do After Dinner: The Wharf
After dinner, continue your walk down State Street and make your way to Stearns Wharf. Offering the best views in Santa Barbara, the wharf is home to many incredible shops and restaurants. Top 10 Beers of the World

As the office staff of Trek Travel, we steal moments of daylight to ride anytime the opportunity presents itself. We spin past cornfields amidst misty sunrises and chase horizons around the lake on summer nights. And then with bikes hung up and another loop behind us, we raise our glass to savor the hops and toast with a well-balanced brew.

Pliny the Elder

Pliny the Elder is a well-balanced double IPA out of Santa Rosa, California’s famous Russian River Brewery. In my humble opinion, it’s one of the best double IPA’s. Anytime I visit California, I search out bottles of this stuff. Bottle shops often restrict purchase of this elusive beer because the demand is so high; the most I’ve ever been able to take home with me is 3 bottles. Most of the time shops sell out within a few days of receiving a shipment. This beer carries a fairly robust 8% ABV, and spectacular hop flavor thanks to multiple additions throughout the brewing process. Next time you find yourself in California, ask for this one by name. – Mark Thomsen

Blanche de Bruxelles

As a kid, my family spent six months living in Brussles, Belgium. At 12 years old, chocolate and waffles were the staples of my diet. Now, many years and an ocean away, the one thing that takes me back to our life abroad is a hearty plate of moules et frites and a delicious Belgian witbier. I’ve always favored light beers and while there are many great options, nothing can beat an ice cold Blanche de Bruxelles. It’s a typical wheat beer in many ways–light, smooth, well-balanced and fresh. But the brewing method is methodical and the coriander and orange peel add incredibly unique flavors. With the Spring Classics upon us, I recommend you head to the pub for frites and see if you can find this one on tap. – Katherine Usher

Heady Topper

Rated number one in the world by Beer Advocate, Heady Toppy is the flagship beer of the Alchemist brewery in Waterbury, Vermont. Only sold locally in limited production, this unfiltered American Double IPA perfectly combines citrus and hops without the undesired bitterness of many beers in its category. After guiding trips in Vermont, I can speak first hand to the craze that occurs when this incredible product hits the shelves—it sells out within hours of being released. In fact, it is so popular that the brewery is now closed to the public after neighbors complained of the noise and revelry. Next time you make your way east, be sure to get in line for a 4-pack. But don’t forget to drink it straight from the can. – Jenny Binkowski

Lagunitas Czech Pils

Lagunitas Czech Pils is easily one of my favorite beers. Most beer drinkers love a good IPA, and I do too, but this Pilsner takes the cake for me. It comes from Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma, California, the working heart and soul of Sonoma County. It’s a crisp, refreshing and super drinkable at any time of the year. It’s obviously best served in a frosty glass under the beating hot summer sun, but a snowy day in the Midwest will work too. If you want a twist on a classic, take one down with a little splash of San Pellegrino Limonata to make a Shandy like you’ve never had. It’s the best recovery drink after long, hot summer rides. – Greg Lyeki

Westvleteren 12

Westvleteren 12 is considered by many to be the best beer in the world, and I’ve been lucky enough to let this beer grace my lips. It’s difficult to objectively determine the “World’s Best Beer,” but once you taste this brew you will completely understand. First, it’s a Trappist. For me, Trappist beers are just fantastic. Unfortunately it might be one of the most difficult beers to find unless you know someone heading to Belgium, and even there it’s hard to get. As far as the characteristics of the beer go, it’s a great pour, wonderful aroma and dark in appearance with a light brown head. It’s incredibly complex with hints of caramel, chocolate, malt and dark fruits. All without any bite in the end. Time for me to head back to Belgium! – Sean Peotter

Moon Man

When most Wisconsinites think of New Glarus Brewing Co., they immediately think of their famous Farmhouse Ale, Spotted Cow. Though I have no beef with Wisconsin’s most beloved craft beer, I always keep my fridge stocked with one of New Glarus’ other gems—Moon Man. Labeled as a ‘No Coast Pale Ale’, its hops add just the right amount of flavor without being overpowering. As the brewery puts it, Moon Man is “Bold and engaging without pretense, because in Wisconsin you do not have to be extreme to be real.” Not located in Wisconsin? Sorry, you cannot get this beer outside our borders. You’ll have to come visit to try it for yourself! – Lindsay Juley

Buckler and Hopalicious

My favorite beer is a cold one. But if I had to narrow it down, I have two current favorites. First, and probably not what you would expect, is a non-alcoholic beer. Brewed by Heineken, Buckler is my go-to beer when I want something cold, refreshing and light that tastes pretty darn close to the real thing. Some people ask, “What’s the point?” Well, if you like beer but don’t want alcohol, this is my pick. My second favorite is Hopalicious. Love the name and enjoy that Ale Asylum brewery is located here in Madison. This very drinkable American Pale Ale, full of hops with a fresh citrus taste, is especially great when paired with a Usinger Brat! – Tania Burke

Woodchuck Hard Cider

Before my beer-loving Trek Travel friends start jumping all over me, let me build my case for the ciders of the world! Whether your dietary restrictions don’t allow for a beer or you just don’t like the taste, ciders are on the rise and for good reason. My top pick is always Woodchuck’s Seasonal Summer cider. It has great blueberry tones and isn’t too sweet. To me, this hard cider tastes just like a summer day—crisp and refreshing. The company name is pretty great too, paying reference to the “Vermontiest of Vermonters” who are sometimes called “Woodchucks.” Next time you want to try something new, or reminisce on your blueberry-picking days, I highly recommend a bottle of summer cider. – Jana Bowman

Hoppy Poppy

I always look forward to southern California adventures with the chance of enjoying my favorite west coast IPA. Weighing in at 65 IBU’s and a solid 6.5% alcohol, Hoppy Poppy IPA from Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company has a distinct hop forward taste and dry finish. Balanced with a slightly lighter body than other IPA favorites, its crisp golden hue and touch of poppy seeds present a brilliant floral flavor and aroma reminiscent of Figueroa Mountain in springtime. “The Fig”, located in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, bursts with its famous California Poppies during spring months and proves a cyclists dream year round, rewarding climbers with views for days. Guest Choice: Vermont

Introducing a new series called “Guest Choice”, where we highlight select places to explore on your next Trek Travel vacation.

You will often hear us say, “It’s your day, you decide,” because our smaller group size allows the flexibility for you to decide how your day unfolds. In addition to multiple daily ride options and shuttle flexibility, this also means that we offer ‘guest choice’ nights designed for you to indulge at a local restaurant of your choosing, or explore the local sites. Whether you want to order take-out while relaxing by the hotel pool or get dressed up for a fancy dinner in town, guest choice nights let you craft your own perfect evening.

For our first edition of the series we are excited to feature Vermont. There’s no better place to celebrate the brilliance of summer or the beauty of changing seasons than Vermont’s Green Mountains. On our explorer trip you will discover the charm of quaint town squares and sample regional specialties from golden maple syrup to smooth Vermont cheddar and rich, velvety ice cream. On Day 4 of the trip, upon arriving in the quintessential mountain town of Stowe, the evening is yours to explore the town and enjoy dinner at the restaurant of your choice. Here are our favorite places:

Where To Go For Social Hour: Crop Bistro and Brewery
On a warm summer evening there is no better place to enjoy happy hour than the patio at Crop. Find a seat at the outdoor bar or enjoy a game of corn hole (bag toss) while sipping a variety of small batch beers from a sampler board. In the same building that housed the Shed, one of Vermont’s storied breweries, Crop now provides the perfect setting to enjoy live music, appetizers and a Helles Brook Lager.

Where To Go For Dinner: Plate
After drinks enjoy a stroll down the recreation path as it winds along the West Branch River back to Main Street. Here you will find Plate, a small 50-seat restaurant with an open kitchen. This new restaurant combines a lively atmosphere with a trendy country vibe. Whether you’re a meat-eater or vegetarian, the local Vermont flavors and healthy food style is sure to leave your mouth watering.

Where To Go For Dessert: I.C. Scoops
If you left room for dessert, walk across the street to I.C. Scoops to taste the premium homemade all-natural ice cream. With 20 flavors to choose from, the decision can be difficult. We recommend indulging in a local favorite maple ‘creamee’, otherwise recognized as soft serve outside the state of Vermont. It is the perfect end to a sweet summer night.

Sadly, I.C. Scoops has shut down operations since this article was originally posted. A top-recommended Vermont ice cream shop worth checking out is lu•lu ice cream!

At some point last season, in the midst of bike rides and social hours, we caught on to the trend of “yoga selfies” that has been gaining momentum as yoga increases in popularity.

You had me at private chef!

“It didn’t take my wife and me long to choose the new Barcelona Villa trip from Trek Travel’s array of adventures. We loved the idea of unpacking our suitcases and staying in one place for a week. As Priscilla said when we first discussed signing up for this trip, “You had me at private chef!”

A portion of the original stone manor house dates to the 16th century and a subsequent addition served for many years as a church. As an architect, I appreciated the contemporary renovation that preserved the history and character of the house yet provided every modern amenity, including robust wifi. I liked relaxing in the appropriately named Moroccan “chill-out” lounge best.
It was an outdoor room covered with lush grape vines and bougainvillea and furnished with casual furniture and dozens of pillows.

Because we had the place to ourselves, we really bonded with our fellow travelers. It seemed like a week-long house party at the home of a favorite (and wealthy) relative. It was wonderful to tumble down to breakfast each morning at our leisure or to come home from a day of riding and relax in the hot tub with a drink from the open bar. Everything was included. I don’t think I touched my wallet all week.

Private Chef on Trek Travel's Barcelona Villa Luxury Cycling VacationWe were also fortunate that trip planner and guide Penny Gatward lives in the nearby resort town of Sitges. She knows the region well and planned a variety of routes leading from the house each day to a featured destination. One day it was a tour, wine tasting and tapas at an outstanding local winery. Another day we rode past a medieval castle to enjoy a classic Catalan lunch at a surprisingly elegant country restaurant. And a third day we celebrated some legendary climbing in the Garraf National Park on a high terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. There was enough terrain to challenge even the most avid riders in our group, but those desiring a mellower experience found that, too.

We found our way to Sitges one evening to take a walking tour and sample authentic pinchos at a tapas bar favored by locals. But the best meals were the custom dinners at the villa prepared by Gillian and Connie, our private chefs. One night we all pitched in to help prepare a sumptuous paella with fresh local seafood. And for our final night they used the outdoor kitchen to grill a variety of meats and seasonal vegetables for a festive dinner on the terrace.
This is a trip that we could definitely take again. It would be wonderful to return to “our” private villa again someday!”
