You have finally arrived in sultry and seductive Provence to begin your luxury 4-day tour! Matisse described this place as “soft and tender, despite its brilliance,” and every moment here is like a living work of impressionistic masterwork. Then we’ll set off for our first introductory ride. You'll have a chance to explore and to have lunch at your leisure, and then you can elect to ride or shuttle back to the hotel. This afternoon, enjoy a rare opportunity: a cooking class with a renowned world-class chef, who will share with you the most important secrets of the authentic Provençal cuisine. Today if you choose to do so, discover the crown jewel of cycling and the hulking massif of Provence – Mont Ventoux. This is one of France’s most unique climbs, with shady, forested switchbacks giving way to a long ascent across a moonscape to cycling’s famous landmark – the lighthouse on top of Ventoux. This mountain has both crowned champions like Chris Froome and Alberto Contador, and witnessed tragedy, like the stories of Tom Simpson. Each is a heralded chapter in the pageantry of our sport, and if you choose to ride the classic ascent from Bedoin and descend to Sault for lunch, you’ll inscribe your own name in its history. Or choose another option: a beautiful relaxed loop through the Luberon countryside. Our first stop this morning is the Gordes weekly market. Pick up a snack of local fruit, bread, or olive oil if you'd like, and explore the tiny alleys of this beautiful village before continuing your ride to Roussillon, a famously ancient, medieval village and archaeological reserve, replete with red brick, buildings, and roofs. Stroll the timeworn streets and enjoy a leisurely lunch of your choice before riding or shuttling back to the hotel. Tonight, head out for a dinner of your choice and explore whatever delights catch your eye.

Please Note: Mt. Ventoux is only rideable in favorable weather and based on the judgment of the guides.

This morning, you'll have the chance for one last breakfast with the view of the enchanting Luberon valley. You’ll say farewell to your guides and fellow riders from the 6-day trip before their scheduled ride departure at 9:00 AM in the hotel. For you, a private Trek Travel shuttle will depart from the hotel at 11:00 AM to transport you to Avignon Central Train Station or the TGV station. Please do not schedule a train out of Avignon before 12:30 PM on the last day of the trip to allow plenty of time for any unforeseen delays.

Arriving

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your 4-day Provence bike tour, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend you fly into Paris (CDG). All international US carriers and Air France offer nonstop flights from major US cities.

Please note that there are two train stations in Avignon: the TGV and the Central (Centre). Between the two, we recommend using the Centre Station due to its proximity to the meeting location, Hôtel d’Europe. However, the TGV station is approximately five miles from the Centre Station downtown. If you happen to arrive at the TGV train station, there is a frequent shuttle bus that runs between the two stations that costs a few euros per person, which usually takes 10 minutes and runs approximately every 20 minutes. Taxis are also available at the TGV station for the 10-minute ride for approximately 20 euros. Train schedules are available and tickets can be booked directly online at www.SNCF.com or by using our recommended travel agent services. (Please note the train schedule changes frequently; consult the SNCF site for the most up-to-date schedule.)

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Hôtel d’Europe, 12 Place Crillon, Avignon, at 11:30 AM on the first day of the trip. After a one-hour shuttle by private coach, your Provençal vacation begins! Enjoy a picnic lunch and taste some wines as your guides explain how the trip will unfold and fit you to your high-end Trek bike. Once everyone’s bike is ready, you’ll be off to explore the quiet roads of Provence.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip starts with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our hotel, Mas des Herbes Blanches (+33 6 03 38 18 86), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. You may take a taxi to the first night’s hotel for approximately 100 euros.

Leaving

You will say farewell to your guides at 8:00 AM at Le Mas des Herbes Blanches on the last day of your trip. After saying goodbye to your guides, you are welcome to enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. At 11:00 AM you will take a private coach from the trip end to the Avignon TGV and/or Central Stations (approximately 60-minute shuttle). Here you can take a train to Paris or any other destination of your choice. Please do not book any train before 12:30 PM.

Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

September in Provence usually bring clear, warm, and pleasant days with cool evenings. Temperatures during these months range between 60s to high 70s, but don’t be surprised if the Provencal sun raises temperatures to mid 80s. The mornings often start off cooler. Rain is always a possibility, so be prepared with the proper rain gear in order to best enjoy your cycling vacation. July and August are quite warm with less of a chance of rain. If you are planning on riding Mont Ventoux, we recommend bringing your fall/winter riding gear. The descent can be very cold. Packing List

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: Paris, France

Paris is home to many of the world’s best-known monuments and museums. A backdrop of many famous photos, the Arc de Triomphe sits majestically at the top end of the Champs-Elysées. You can go to the observation deck for an expansive view down the world-famous boulevard from Napoléon’s huge triumphal arch—the largest in the world. The Arc isn’t the only site that offers a great view of the city, however. Other monuments with impressive vistas include the view from the white dome of the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, or from atop the 56 floors of the Tour Montparnasse, and of course at the summit of the most famous monument in Paris—la Tour Eiffel. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

after

After: Avignon, France

If you are planning on extending your luxury travel in Provence and exploring the walled city of Avignon, there are a number of must sees. Palais des Papes stands as the largest Gothic palace in Europe. With the arrival of the popes in the 14th century, for a period known as the Avignon Papacy, the Palais des Papes was home to the Sovereign Pontiffs. One must also visit the nearby Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct that was used to bring Uzès spring water to Nîmes. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:
