Welcome to as wild as it gets. Alaska isn't just the Last Frontier; it's the deepest, most untouched natural playground America can offer. Greet your guides at the Hotel Captain Cook in downtown Anchorage before setting out on a 2.5 hour drive south towards the Kenai Peninsula and Lowell Point State Park. Enjoy a classic Trek Travel picnic spread before hiking the coastal trails along beautiful Resurrection Bay. After your walk, your guides will fit and dial your bike, then you’ll embark on a quiet ride north, back to the historic fishing port town of Seward, Alaska. Resurrection Bay Guided Kayak Tour

Description:

Rise early this morning and head to the harbor for a 3-hour guided kayak trip through Resurrection Bay. Experience this unreal intertidal zone under your own power, capping it off with a walk through a magical coastal rainforest. Bring your camera and get ready to experience a true microcosm of Alaska. Once back in Seward, we’ll grab a quick lunch and head into Kenai Fjords National Park for a visit to the Exit Glacier. Walk the flood plain, hike to a viewpoint looking face-to-face with this ultimate wonder. Hop back in the van for a short trip back to town. This evening, you'll board the Glacier Discovery train and head north on one of the world’s most magical railways for the 3-hour trip through the Chugach National Forest to a true authentic Alaskan ski town: Girdwood. Nestled in a deep valley and up next to Glacier Creek, this amazing ski resort town will be your adventure hub for the next two nights. Today's itinerary is guaranteed to be burned into your memory for years to come. Start off with a fantastic ride along the Bird-to-Gird Trail, one of the most breathtaking coastal trails in the US, punctuated with majestic moose and bald eagles. Ride along Turnagain Arm, through a skeleton spruce and fir forest—thanks to the famous 1964 earthquake which registered a bone-rattling 9.2 magnitude—and look out for abundant sea birds while you keep your eyes peeled for Beluga whales just off-shore. This afternoon, choose your own Alyeska adventure: from short nature hikes to lift-accessed downhill biking, summer adventures abound right out of the Hotel's door. Take the aerial tram, hike the Northface Trail, or visit the Roundhouse Museum. We’ll treat you to a ride on the famous aerial tram, hike the Northface Trail, or visit the Roundhouse Museum. Description:

All aboard! Pack your bags and hope on the Alaska Railroad Denali Star for a rail adventure north to Talkeetna. Wander up to the viewing platform and catch 360-degree views of the Alaskan wilderness that few get to see, from the perch above a speeding train. After this short, 2.5-hour train trip, enjoy lunch on your own in one of Talkeetna's many downtown cafes before grabbing your paddle and life jacket for an afternoon float down the world-famous Talkeetna and Susitna Rivers. Landing back in town, check into your hotel for the next two nights along the banks of the Susitna River: the Susitna River Lodge. Tonight, treat yourself to a dinner of your choice in town.

Your Day, You Decide

Description:

Today is your day and you decide. Want to experience Denali National Park from the skies? Let your guides know ahead of time and they can arrange it. If so, you'll board one of Talkeetna Air’s Dehavilland Otter aircraft and take a full lap of Denali National Park. Catch a birds-eye view of Denali before the pilot sets the plane right down on a glacier! Hop out, take a photo and bask in the glory that is Mt. Denali. Fly back to Talkeetna and grab a bite. Alternatively, you can't come to Alaska without catching a famed King or Sockeye salmon. We can arrange a guided half or full-day fishing trip on the Big Susitna, Talkeetna or Chulitna Rivers with a local pro. Maybe you’d like to experience this place from the saddle of a bike. In this case, pedal the Chase Trail right out of town or explore this frontier town on your own in the afternoon. Tonight, celebrate a real Alaskan adventure with your Trek Travel comrades with dinner and beers and Denali Brewing Company. What a day!

Description:

It's time to say goodbye to the glory of the Alaskan wilderness. This morning, after a leisurely breakfast, choose to visit the Susitna Salmon Center. A fisheries biologist will guide a short walk along the Susitna River and tell the incredible story that is the native salmon run. After your walk, pack your bags and climb into the Trek Travel van for your journey back to Anchorage. Enjoy a cafe lunch with your fellow guests and Trek Travel guides before bidding farewell at 1:00 PM. What a week it's been!

Thank your Guides, by tipping

Gratuities for your Trek Travel guides are not included in your trip price. We recommend tipping 7.5-10% of your trip price for the guide team. Local currency is preferred and unless you want to tip separately, guides will divide tips amongst themselves. Please tip your guides at your discretion, based on their level of professionalism, guest care and service.

Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer each and every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

On all of our vacations, Trek Travel strives to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Alaska is best suited for our Type 1 Riders. Type 2+ Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer. The terrain is mostly flat along the coastal towns of Seward and Girdwood. A slightly undulating landscape characterizes Talkeetna although the ride there is primarily on a rails-to trails system route.

Weather in Alaska in July and August is fantastic. Daily highs reaching into the mid-60's F and lows at night dipping into the upper 40's F. You'll get plenty of daylight in Alaska as July and August averages 17 hours. It will rain a bit here in summer. July averages about 12 days with some rain and August averages about 14. Don't fret though, there are an equal number of clear days too!

On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Due to the nature of this trip, upgrade bike options are not available.

If you’re going we’re going on almost all our trips. Trips with 1 guest booked are guaranteed to run. Select trips like Cross Country, Race and Special Edition trips require a minimum number of guests to run and are not guaranteed until that number is reached. Contact your Trip Consultant for more details.

In the event that a departure has low enrollment, we will notify guests at 60-90 days before departure to give the option to select a different date with more guests booked. Please do not reserve airfare before confirming your Trek Travel trip.

When a trip is booked, a guest confirmation letter is immediately sent out. One week prior to the trip start you will receive an email containing a trip start meeting location reminder and any last minute information that you will need to know before your trip. Once you arrive at your destination Trek Travel staff will brief you on the day-to-day plan for the trip and provide you with daily route guides and a detailed map allowing you to ride with complete confidence and independence.

Meeting & Departing

How to get there

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Anchorage for the trip start.

The airport is 6.5 miles from the pickup location at Hotel Captain Cook. Transportation from the airport can be arranged through the hotel or guests may book a taxi from the airport for approximately $25.

Hotel Captain Cook | Anchorage, Alaska

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the hotel lobby of Hotel Captain Cook (939 W 5th Ave, Anchorage, AK 99501) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. After Afterwards you'll hop in the Trek Travel van for a 2.5 hour journey south to the sleepy port town of Seward where you will enjoy a picnic lunch at Lowell Point State Reserve. Following lunch, your guides will introduce you to your Trek bike for the week and dial in your perfect fit before heading out to ride the quiet roads around Seward.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Harbor 360 Hotel (888 514 8687), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details.

Hotel Captain Cook | Anchorage, Alaska

You and your guides will shuttle back to Anchorage from Talkeetna on Friday morning. Enjoy one last lunch together in Anchorage before heading to the Hotel Captain Cook and bid farewell to your fellow travelers around 1:00 pm. From the Hotel Captain Cook, catch a shuttle to the airport or to your post-trip hotel to continue your Alaskan adventure.

Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, is in the south-central part of the state on the Cook Inlet. It's traditionally been the gateway into the wilderness that makes this region famous, but that's not to say it doesn't have its own landmarks. Don't miss the Alaska Native Heritage Center and cement a connection through the native population with an education in their history, art, dance and culture.
