Welcome to beautiful northern Spain! This often overlooked region is ripe with discoveries, including great food, wine, and most importantly, riding! After an hour long shuttle we will arrive to the medieval town of Sajazarra where you'll get acquainted with the group and get fitted to your Trek bikes for the week. A light and delicious picnic with fresh and local delicacies will be available for you during the bike fit. Once we are all comfortable with our position on the bike, your guides will talk about safety on the road and the historical significance of the highlights of our route. Then, you're off on your adventure! The highlight of our route today is a perfectly preserved Roman bridge in Cihuri, dating back 2000 years, to 1 B.C. It's not often that we get to ride over 2000 years of history! Once you make it to the hotel there will be some time to unwind, unpack, and prepare for our welcome dinner as a group at the hotel's restaurant.

Today's Ride:

Sajazarra to Haro

Included Meals:

Today, after breakfast at the hotel, you'll head out to the east, pedaling through Tempranillo grape vineyards and toward the Basque province. You'll just touch this unique corner of the world as you head toward the medieval town of Laguardia, also knowns as the city of cellars. On the way, left and right, you’ll encounter numerous wineries and fragrant vineyards, as you'd expect in Spain’s most popular wine region. Laguardia is a fascinating city, sitting atop a maze of 300 cellars, called “calados,” that were carved in rock back in the middle ages and were intended both for protection and storage of the town's most valuable wines. Lunch is on your own today in Laguardia so you are free to wander around to explore town and find your perfect Riojano restaurant. On the way back, you'll cross over Rio Ebro back into La Rioja. You'll pedal through Eltziego and other beautiful villages with a rich tradition in wine, including San Vincente de la Sonsierra which features numerous wineries and an overarching medieval castle dating back to the 11th century. The hike up is worth the effort, as you will be rewarded with amazing views of the entire countryside, its vineyards, and the Ebro River. Enjoy the stunning views of Bastida before you arrive back in Haro. Dinner is on your own tonight, offering a great opportunity to explore the town.

Our plans today include a ride through the history of walking. You'll head toward the renowned town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a medieval village constructed specifically for the needs of the pilgrims who were walking the Camino de Santiago. You can still spot them today, traversing the grueling 500 kilometer course toward Santiago de Compostela. You'll stop here for a sandwich packed by your guides, and then avid riders can choose to head to Ezcaray, a quaint local village just up the road that is well worth a visit. In Ezcaray there will be plenty of opportunities for a café cortado and perhaps some pintxo (local tapas), before heading back all the way to Haro. Dinner is again yours to discover Haro’s best restaurants. Your guides will be happy to point you in the direction of their favorite local spots.

You'll pedal through golden wheat fields and the foothills of stunning topaz mountains until you reach the 11th century monasteries of Yuso and Suso, which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Spend some time here to explore the place where the first words of the Castilian language were ever recorded, and soak in the historical significance of this unique moment captured in stone. Your guides have sourced the most fresh and local packed lunch for you today, to be enjoyed whenever you need it. The ride back is as beautiful as it was to get there, always accompanied by the gorgeous mountains in the horizon. Tonight we will dine together as a group in celebration of a great vacation of riding and discovering one of Spain’s cultural gems!

Planning For Your Trip

The best time of the year to visit Rioja for outdoor activities is from late June to early September. July is the sunniest and driest month of the year. August days can be hot, as can the beginning of September, but it does cool off in the evenings. While less likely in the summer months, rain is always a possibility so be prepared with the proper rain gear in order to best enjoy your Rioja bike tour. Packing List

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before & After: Bilbao, Spain

If you are planning on extending your Rioja vacation and exploring Bilbao, there are a number of must-sees. The de-facto capital of the Basque country is a major city with a skyscraper lined downtown, surrounded by vast green mountains, a perfect combination of modern and natural with a buzzing energy and a ton of fun things to do. Don't miss out the Palacio Euskalduna, the town's concert hall, and the imposing Cathedral of Bilbao with its gothic beauty. The Fine Arts museum and the Basque Museum are also a must-do for those who have appreciation for art, but more than anything, make some time to marvel the works of the Guggenheim Museum. Designed by Frank Gehry, this architectural marvel is as interesting on the outside as it is on the inside. For the remainder of your time in Bilbao, make sure you enjoy as many pinxto bars as possible, walk the narrow, winding streets of Casco Viejo, and have a drink in the cosmopolitan Plaza Nueva. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre- and post-trip hotel:
