England Coast to Coast Bike Tour
Yorkshire is "God's own country" - The northern English county really is a true garden of eden with its abundance of national parks. The Dales, famous for their rugged, rolling terrain; hardy sheep; and a good cup of tea round every corner. The North York Moors is my favourite place in the whole world to ride in summer, the heather blooming deep purple, the sounds and smell of wildlife all around. Growing up, I would cycle deep into the national parks, sometimes getting hopelessly lost but I would always find my way home on a new, exciting, twisty road. Yorkshire has so much to offer, the folk are some of the most friendly on earth and they can cook pretty well, too! I fell in love the day I was born but for you, your love affair is only just beginning.

Welcome to England! Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Penrith Railway Station at 12:00 PM. From our meeting point at Penrith train station, we’ll transfer to our start point on the outskirts of a small historic market town. After introductions, lunch and a bike fit we’ll head straight out towards moor-covered hills, ultimately leading us onto the the moors where we ride on quiet country roads. We leave the Lake District National Park and into the adjacent Yorkshire Dales National Park. Our route travels through a succession of pretty villages, such as Brampton, Shap, and Great Asby, each with their own church and country pub! On this classic day of riding, you'll traverse the northern reaches of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, riding through the stunning Swaledale Valley with its archetypal Yorkshire Dales countryside. After a few miles to warm up the legs, take on a 1,000 foot climb out of the valley up onto Birkdale Common where you will enjoy quiet roads and wide-open vistas over the heather-clad moors. Your effort is rewarded as the next 20 miles are mainly downhill, passing through classic Yorkshire scenery of drystone walls, beautiful villages, and the ubiquitous fields full of sheep! At the village of Keld, we reach the River Swale and continue to a traditional tea shop in Muker for refreshments. Our next climb is one of the giants of Yorkshire, Buttertubs, featured on stage 1 of the 2014 Tour de France, this 4 km climb is full of spectacular scenery and will give you a great sense of achievement. A long, steady descent takes us to our lunch stop in Askrigg also known as ‘Darrowby’ in TV vet James Heriot of ‘All Creatures Great & Small’. After enjoying a hearty English breakfast, you’ll enjoy more superb terrain as you continue riding through the Yorkshire Dales National Park and its many historic villages. It’s a tale of three dales as we ride through the stunning valleys (or dales) of Coverdale, Wharfedale, and Nidderdale on a memorable loop through the National Park. There are some longer climbs today with a few testing ramps but each brings its own reward, not the least of which is the fast, fun descent into the next dale! We first ride through Coverdale, a valley which is notable for the ‘shake holes’ which dot the land on both sides. These are conical pits dissolved into limestone over a long time by the action of the rain and it creates a very unique geological landscape. Enjoy sweeping views as you roll from valley to valley, with a steep descent into Wharfedale, a supremely scenic spot with rocky hillsides catching your eye at either side. You'll pass the Gouthwaite Reservoir, a particularly good location for bird-watching, before your final climb of the day onto High Ash Head Moor and a last few fast miles to end the day's magnificent ride. Back at Masham, we'll visit one of our favorite local breweries, the Black Sheep Brewery Bar, for a freshly poured pint and then you'll head out for a free evening in the village.

Today offers an easier day of riding as we head east, positioning ourselves for our ride to the coast the following day. You'll leave Masham today following a relaxed morning and a delicious breakfast. You'll cross the flatlands to reach the traditional market town of Thirsk, made famous for being the home of the veterinary surgeon and author, James Herriot, who created entertaining stories recounting his nearly 50 years of practicing veterinarian medicine for the surrounding villages. These stories have since been transformed into a highly popular British television series, "All Creatures Great and Small." With Thirsk's medieval cobbled market square, original frontage shops, and historic coaching inns, you’ll appreciate having some free time to explore and have lunch on your own in town. Leaving town, you'll ride into North York Moors National Park. After passing through the village of Boltby, a short but sharp climb will take you onto the escarpment with elevated views of the surrounding countryside. A glorious descent takes you past the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, one of England's most powerful Cistercian monasteries until it was seized under the infamous King Henry VIII in 1538, then into the town of Helmsley, where you'll finish your ride beneath the flanks of Helmsley Castle. Your hotel for tonight in the charming village of Helmsley, where we will convene for a dinner of local specialties. Also be sure to try some of the delicious local county cheeses that Yorkshire has become known for.

Instead, we descend the moorland roads past the millennium stone eventually arriving at our lunch stop, a quirky cafe situated deep in Great Fryup Dale. Peaceful and undulating lanes are ahead of us, bound for the east coast, passing Ugglebarnby, we take on a final climb and you may taste the salty sea air as you crest the final rise! The sight of the North Sea on the horizon means that our journey is almost over ... and when we arrive at the picturesque fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay, we know we’ve made it! Dipping our wheels into the lapping waves makes it official, so then it’s time to go celebrate the achievement! The twisty cobbled alleyways of this village used to be the stomping grounds of smugglers. Now they hide many great pubs - perfect for a celebratory drink! Afterwards, we transfer back to the hotel for our final night dinner.

Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

In Yorkshire, June and July are the warmest months of the year, where temperatures average anywhere from 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (18 to 29 degrees Celcius) while August and September temperatures can range from the 50 to 70 (10 to 21 degrees Celcius). Always remember that rain is possible daily, at any time of the year. Yorkshire weather is very unpredictable! We recommend you to bring layers, arm and leg warmers, as well as rain gear. Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: Manchester, UK

Manchester is one of the most exciting cities to visit in the UK right now, offering a compelling mix of modern culture, fantastic food, a world-famous music scene set against the backdrop of a rich industrial heritage. It is the nucleus of the largest metropolitan area in the north of England, and it remains an important regional city that was once at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution. In many respects it could claim to be the first of the new generation of industrial cities created in the western world during the past 250 years. Manchester Town Hall in Albert Square is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. Regarded as one of the finest examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in the United Kingdom, it is one of the most important Grade One-listed buildings in England. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel in Manchester:

after

After: York, UK

This beautifully preserved medieval city is a must-visit for history lovers. Be sure to visit The Shambles, a street of traditional timber-framed buildings dating back to the 14th century. And of course, the magnificent York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. Due to the city’s modest size, it’s easy to explore its cobbled streets on foot. This North Yorkshire city is also a centre for shopping, culture, arts, and entertainment. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel in York:
