Welcome to Girona! It's the historical gem of northern Catalonia, and home to some of the best riding Europe-wide. Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at Hotel Nord 1901 at 9:30 AM. Upon arrival, your guides will lead a short round of introductions, review ride safety, and fit you to your Trek bike. You will then head out for the first ride to one of the most celebrated climbs in the area, "The Hincapie Climb", named after the cycling legend George Hincapie. Intimidating as it might sound, the grades are actually pleasant and the views are spectacular. This climb is one of the regional "must-do's" and it will get your warmed up for the rest of the week. Once at the top you can choose whether you will head back to town or continue on. The descent is smooth and beautiful and at the base, there is one more choice to be made. The avid option takes you through the rolling countryside to Púbol, home to Salvador Dalí's Castle, and to Peratallada, a beautifully preserved medieval village. Alternatively, continue on to our next and final climb of the day, one of the most celebrated mountains surrounding Girona, Els Angels, and another local's favorite. Today is van supported in case you need extra snacks or drinks along the route. You can push yourself if you'd like to tackle all of today's mileage or take it easy on the shorter option. Dinner will be together with the group tonight in one of our favorite local restaurants.

The road back to Girona is a gentle grade that you can enjoy at your own pace. This afternoon you will have plenty of time to discover Girona and enjoy dinner on your own. There are many excellent options and you will be provided with a list of guides' favorite places.

Halfway into the ride you have the option to add more miles with an out-and-back climb to Sant Esteve de Lemena before heading back to your hotel for a little relaxation before dinner with your group. Today you are in for a treat as we will take off on our most scenic ride of the week. The route today starts by riding out of Girona through surrounding towns, followed by a climb in the coastal hills of Cadiretes; it is just a few uphill pedal-strokes between us and the shimmering blue waters of the Mediterranean sea. The descent is breathtaking and surreal. Take in the ocean breeze and the soft touch of the sun--this is what you are here for. Once at the base, we will still have some work to do as the ride weaves in and out on coastal rolling hills. The effort is absolutely worth it though, as you will be rewarded with the most stunning views of the entire week. Today's ride is van supported so you'll have the opportunity to have extra snacks and drinks available to you. You can push yourself if you'd like to tackle all of today's mileage or take it easy on the shorter option. Once in the town of Llangostera, we are finished for the day and we will shuttle back to Girona, unless you want to take the avid option and head back on your bike. Dinner will be as a group again tonight with the chance to meet new arrivals and share stories with friends at one of Girona's best local eateries.

Once in Banyoles, take a moment to rest and dip your toes in for a refreshing break. On the way back we will navigate through the towns that surround Girona on both today's ride and the avid option, making our way to the medieval centre and our hotel. Dinner is on your own again tonight to enjoy in Girona. Choose from a selection of excellent restaurant options provided on your app for the week and then afterwards enjoy Girona's buzzing night scene.

We will head out through Saint Gregori and Llorà, on a gentle upward-trending grade, all the way to El Pla de Sant Joan. The descent is as gentle as the climb and the road surface is butter-smooth. At the base of the descent you'll reach Bonmatí, and take the direct track back to town or the longer route through more of the beautiful Catalan countryside. The choice is always yours and always at your own pace! Tonight we'll dine as a group, toasting to great rides, big views, and even bigger smiles that could only be described as "perfecto!" Packing and Weather

In Girona, you can expect to experience temperatures in the 60s and 70s in the fall and 50s to 60s in the winter months. Girona is located between the Mediterranean Ocean off the Costa Brava and the Pyrenées Mountains. Be sure to bring plenty of layers for riding. Packing List

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: Girona, Spain

Girona has long enjoyed the reputation for being the richest town in Spain. Founded in the first century BC, it soon became the most important point on the Spanish Via Augusta. Enjoy the reflections of the colorful pastel row houses on the River Onyar before crossing the river and wandering the narrow cobblestone streets of the medieval Jewish quarter. Admire the cathedral from below and then enjoy a 15- minute walk atop the old town walls to get great views of the town. Search out Café Via Augusta in the old quarter, where professional cyclists training in Girona sometimes stop for coffee. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

after

After: Barcelona, Spain

The Catalonian capital of Barcelona boasts a beautiful coastline; a great diversity of culture, leisure, and shopping; creative, innovative gastronomy; and an avant-garde spirit. Be sure to check out some of the fantastic architecture and art of Antonio Gaudí, such as Sagrada Familia or Parc Guell. The Gothic quarter is the heart of Barcelona’s old town, with narrow cobblestone streets on which Picasso and Miró lived long ago. Las Ramblas is a long tree-lined shoppers’ paradise that leads to the sea. Be sure not to miss the fascinating Boqueria market for a slice of local life. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:
