Description:

You'll confront two of the Pyrenees’ legendary mountain passes today alongside the legendary Fränk Schleck as he joins us for today’s epic climbs—the beautiful col d'Aspin followed by the mighty Col du Tourmalet, the highest pass in the central Pyrenees. Since its debut in 1910, Tourmalet has been included in the Tour more often than any other climb. We'll first warm up with a 7.8-mile climb up the Col d'Aspin before the ascent of the Col du Tourmalet from the Sainte-Marie-de-Campan side—as the race will tomorrow. Just shy of 11 miles long and with gradients often in the double digits, this climb is sure to hold your attention. Once you’ve reached the top, linger on this famed summit and pay homage to rider Octave Lapize, the first pro to summit this climb in the Tour de France over a century ago and snap a photo with Fränk! After refueling at the cafe of your choice, you’ll descend through the Gorges de Luz, with dramatic jagged cliffs above and a lively bubbling stream below. Tonight's hotel is in the picturesque village of Gèdre where we’ll enjoy an exclusive Q&A dinner event with Fränk to learn his behind-the-scenes Tour secrets. Take it all in and prepare for more live race action tomorrow.

Our Race Difference:

RACE SUPPORT & EXPERTISE:

Each of our race trips has a minimum of two First Class Guides. If a group size gets above 20 persons, you will have additional guides to ensure that you always enjoy superior customer service. You never ride alone. We support you both on and off the bike. We always have one guide in our support vehicle and the other cycling alongside you. Our race trip guides have the experience and mechanical skills necessary to keep you riding comfortably at your best in all conditions. They bring years of experience managing the trip logistics of pro race itineraries and stage viewings. They’ll fill up your water bottles, change your tire, shuttle you over the hill, provide you with local insight and make sure everyone is on the right track. Off the bike, your guides are at your service to help you with anything you need—massage appointments, wine suggestions, or finding that special local treat you’re craving.

PRO LEVEL EQUIPMENT:

When it comes to bikes, we set the standard. Included in the price of your trip is the choice to ride one of our unprecedented premium quality Trek bicycles. We have one of the largest selections of bike styles, frame sizes and equipment to ensure that your bike is perfectly fitted to you.

SIGNATURE RACE VIEWINGS & ACCESS:

We don’t want you to miss anything. After all, it’s all a part of being exposed to the races and the regions. All of the VIP race access, citizens’ ride entry fees (as applicable), and cultural events that are mentioned in your itinerary are covered in the cost of your trip. Race trip itineraries include at least two live race viewings, sometimes including race-organized VIP stage start or finish access. Guests enjoy prime stage viewing locations complete with front row seating, catered lunches, live TV broadcasts, and pro rider appearances (whenever possible).

SIGNATURE ACCOMMODATIONS & MEALS:

Our race trip designer selects hotels with the best locations to get you up close access to the race routes for riding and viewing the stages. Typically, race trip itineraries will feature a mix of 3- and 4-star hotels. On our race trips, the cuisine is fresh and local. Our dinners will range from casual tapas to multi-course dinners. Breakfast is served each morning at the hotel. Lunches will offer a bounty of local specialties, from fabulous picnics to local fare at quaint bistros.

FAQs

Trip Changes

Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer each and every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

  • Rider Type | 4
  • Average Daily Mileage | 32
  • Terrain | Mountainous
  • Average Daily Elevation | 4,700 feet

On all of our vacations, Trek Travel strives to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. The Tour de France is best suited for our Type 4 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 3 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van. The terrain is challenging, with stunning views and quiet roads. We will ride an average of 2-3 major climbs per day. You will be invigorated by the fresh mountain air and will take in wonderful vistas and the landmarks that dot the routes of France’s most famous race. See day by day itinerary for specific daily ride distance and elevation options.

On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. See Included In The Trip Price for more information. Some non-riding options on this trip are:

  • Official VIP race access passes to the open top bus at finish of Stage 16 in Bagnères-de-Luchon
  • Exclusive Pro Team Access—get behind the scenes with the Trek-Segafredo team
  • Official VIP Race Access Passes to the departure village of Stage 17 in Bagnères-de-Luchon
  • Official VIP race access passes to the exclusive “Relais Etape” hospitality zone of Stage 19

The summer months in the Pyrenees are typically warm with daily temperatures ranging from the mid 60's to low 80's, and evenings dropping to the mid 50's to mid 60's. When traveling in the mountains it is best to be prepared for variable conditions as weather can change very quickly. We recommend always traveling with rain gear as well as breathable layers to provide warmth when the temperature drops.

If you’re going we’re going on almost all our trips. Trips with 1 guest booked are guaranteed to run. Select trips like Cross Country, Race and Special Edition trips require a minimum number of guests to run and are not guaranteed until that number is reached. Contact your Trip Consultant for more details.

In the event that a departure has low enrollment, we will notify guests at 60-90 days before departure to give the option to select a different date with more guests booked. Please do not reserve airfare before confirming your Trek Travel trip.

When a trip is booked, a guest confirmation letter is immediately sent out. One week prior to the trip start you will receive an email containing a trip start meeting location reminder and any last minute information that you will need to know before your trip. Once you arrive at your destination Trek Travel staff will brief you on the day-to-day plan for the trip and provide you with daily route guides and a detailed map allowing you to ride with complete confidence and independence.

Please review our packing list page for more details.

Before: Pau, France

Pau, the capital of the Pyrénées-Atlantique, is situated near the border of Spain, between Toulouse and the Côte Basque. It offers spellbinding views of both rolling hills and snow capped mountains. Don’t miss the Pau Castle, the birth place of King Henry IV, and the fortress of the Viscounts of Bearn, a royal residence during the renaissance. Parts of the castle look quite austere, but the main entrance is lovely. You’ll find exceptional museums, including the Bernadotte Museum and the Musée des Beaux-Art, which house works by Rubens and Dégas among many others.
