Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

Northern Spain is greener and rainier than the typical Spanish description would have you believe. Average temperatures in August range between 60-80F (16-27C). Our route will take us along the coast and into the mountains, drastically increasing the range of weather we could experience. Dress in layers, be prepared for shifts between daytime and evening, and make sure to bring rain gear in order to best enjoy your vacation. Packing List

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: Bilbao, Spain

If you are planning on exploring Bilbao, there are a number of must-sees. The de-facto capital of the Basque country is a major city with a skyscraper lined downtown, surrounded by vast green mountains, a perfect combination of modern and natural with a buzzing energy and a ton of fun things to do. Don't miss out the Palacio Euskalduna, the town's concert hall, and the imposing Cathedral of Bilbao with its gothic beauty. The Fine Arts museum and the Basque Museum are also a must for those who have appreciation for art, but more than anything, make some time to marvel the works of the Guggenheim Museum. Designed by Frank Gehry, this architectural wonder is as interesting on the outside as it is on the inside. For the remainder of your time in Bilbao, make sure you enjoy as many pinxto (tapas) bars as possible, walk the narrow, winding streets of Casco Viejo, and have a drink in the cosmopolitan Plaza Nueva. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre- and post-trip hotel:

after

After: San Sebastian, Spain

Consider extending your trip by staying in San Sebastian. It is a small but incredibly charming city that offers something for every taste. Set between the Bay of Biscay and the beautiful mountains of Spain’s Basque Country, you can enjoy the gorgeous city beaches such as Playa de la Concha by day, then in the evening visit the local pintxos bars that pair local wines with bite-sized regional specialties in this typical Basque form of tapas. If gourmet dining is more for you, the town is world-renowned for its innovative chefs. Be sure to visit the bustling port and walk the picturesque bayfront promenade then take in the charm of the Old Town, thriving with shops and restaurants as well as a plethora of markets. The town features many impressive buildings with a typical Belle Epoque design, including the Hotel Maria Christina, your trip hotel. We recommend the following for your post-trip accommodations:
