Tucson Ride Camp

The Southwest’s perfect training grounds for cyclists

The high desert and alpine tundra combine for the perfect elixir of cycling and relaxation in Tucson. Redesigned for Fall 2018, this is the pros' favorite off-season destination for training and testing, with sun for days and climbing forever. We'll sample it all on two wheels, from the local group ride routes to the world-famous (and quad-pounding) climb of Mount Lemmon. In between we'll discover the local college-town culture, try the best bistros, sip specialty coffees and act like riding is our job for an all-too-brief five days. People For Bikes has selected this area one of the nation's best for cycling, and after this week, you'll know why.

It will get your legs moving for the rest of the week, or choose to check-in to your hotel room and join the group for dinner to discuss the excitement ahead.

Dinner

We're riding typically Tucson today, with a gorgeous day in the saddle spinning through saguaro cactus and stunning views of the Santa Catalina mountains. For those who chose to climb Pistol Hill and Colossal Canyon, you'll remember that Bicycling Magazine rates this ride one of its top 13 best rides in a National Park, so take the time to savor every moment and snap a few photos for your friends back home. This is a day you're sure to remember. Celebrate on your own or with new friends this evening at an undiscovered bistro or pub in Tucson. Dinner is on our own in the city this evening, and guides will be on-hand to make recommendations to try Tucson's best.

Today's Ride:

Saguaro East
Approximately 50 miles with 2,000 feet of climbing

Avid Option:

Saguaro East with Pistol Hill
Approximately 75 miles with 3,000 feet of climbing

Hotel:

Embassy Suites by Hilton Tucson Paloma Village

Included Meals:

Breakfast | Lunch

Are you ready for the absolute best, nationally-known climb in southern Arizona? Today we tackle the beast known as Mt. Lemmon, and traverse several microclimates along the way. We have a shuttled start, then begin the climb into the high desert, and climb a 29-mile course at an average grade of 4.3%, gaining over 7,000 feet in elevation. The grade holds at about 5 percent for nearly the entire climb as saguaro cacti and mesquite trees give way to cool pine forests, brisk air, and dramatic igneous rock formations. Snap some photos at the top, and turn around for a smooth, relaxing descent as we head back. You may want to stop for a mid-ride coffee at Le Buzz, a well-known coffee shop that's friendly to cyclists. Then we'll roll back to the hotel for some R&R before we gather for dinner to toast our accomplishment at a local bistro.

Today's Ride:

Mt Lemmon with shuttle start
Approximately 85 miles with 7,900 feet of climbing

Short Option:

Mt Lemmon to Middle Bear Return
Approximately 60 miles with 4,700 feet of climbing

Avid Option:

Mt Lemmon Ski Area Summit Return
Approximately 88 miles with 8,700 feet of climbing

Hotel:

Embassy Suites by Hilton Tucson Paloma Village

Included Meals:

Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Today we'll ride like Tucson locals, on the Gates Pass McCain Loop route. This is a well-known, locally famous group ride route with the right mix of flats, rollers and short, punchy climbs just to keep things interesting. We'll stop for lunch on the way, and head back to relax at the hotel for the remainder of the afternoon. If you fall in love with this route, you can move to Tucson and ride it with the locals every Tuesday morning. Enjoy your final late afternoon in Tucson before gathering for one last dinner as a group to toast a week of discoveries, challenges and newfound fitness.

Today's Ride:

Saguaro West Gates Pass and McCain Loop
Approximately 50 miles with 1,700 feet of climbing

Hotel:

Embassy Suites by Hilton Tucson Paloma Village

Included Meals:

Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to Tucson. Rise at your own pace today and enjoy a final breakfast at the hotel. Hopefully your legs are well worn from the week, but if not, feel free to choose from one of our self-guided ride options to provide a few final miles. We can recommend a perfect final spin for a beautiful loop with some rolling terrain to finish off the week. Please make sure to return to the hotel in time for final check-out. You will say farewell to your guides at the hotel at 11:30 AM and the use of your Trek bike also ends at this time. Please be sure to secure transportation to your departure airport prior to the last day of the trip.
