The lower slopes offer views across to the valley to the Picos de Europa National Park, a feature in last year’s Vuelta. This stage is famous for 2012 ‘s Alberto Contador attack on the Collado de Hoz, a gentle climb, where Contador caught his rivals unaware and won the stage and ultimately the overall victory. The stage finishes with 2,5km climb to a beautiful Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, where we will enjoy a spectacular final. This afternoon we will shuttle to the region of Asturias, which hosts other incredible climbs and challenging routes. Tonight we will enjoy a Asturian cuisine in the hotel restaurant.

Chechu's climb Loop
Approximately 39 miles with 3,300 feet of climbing

Description:

Today is our chance to discover a region of Asturias. We'll rest our legs after two days of climbing before tomorrow’s big mountain stage. We will spin our way toward Mieres and continue to the Puerto de Cotobello, now better known as the Cima Chechu, dedicated to a former pro cyclist who introduced the climb to the Vuelta in 2010. It’s a 10km long climb that maintains a fairly consistent gradient between 7% and 9% all the way to the top, with four or five sections that rise to 12%. Don't worry - the shaded, tree-lined sections and the mountain views from the top are well worth the effort to get there. After soaking up the scenery, we will descend to Piñeres to join the official race route. Pro riders continue all the way to the coast, but we'll go back to our hotel to watch the rest of the stage on TV, savoring Spanish gourmet cheese and Asturian cider. Enjoy a relax evening in our beautiful hotel.

Fortunately, you'll have Spanish cycling legend and US Postal Service domestique Chechu Rubiera riding with you up the +20% pitches, offering his counsel as you grind up together. L'Angliru was last featured in the 2013 Vuelta, when Vincenzo Nibali and Chris Horner battled each other into the clouds, with Horner emerging from the mist as the stage victor. Alberto Contador, winner of the Angliru in the 2008 Vuelta, described it as the hardest mountain he has ever climbed. It's the toughest challenge that professional road cycling can offer, so enjoy the victory feeling before we a long descend half-way back to the valley to the hospitality area and watch the grand finale battle between Vuelta champions.

FAQs

Trip Changes

Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer each and every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

  • Rider Type | 3/4
  • Average Daily Mileage | 40
  • Terrain | Mountainous
  • Average Daily Elevation | 5,400 ft.

On all of our vacations, Trek Travel strives to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. La Vuelta is best suited for our Type 3 and 4 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate lower type of riders who seek less mileage and climbing with a boost in the van. The terrain is challenging, with steep climbs followed by long descents. See Itinerary for specific daily ride distance and elevation options.

Northern Spain is greener and rainier than the typical Spanish description would have you believe. Average temperatures in August range between 60-80F. Our route will take us along the coast and into the mountains, drastically increasing the range of weather we could experience. Dress in layers, to be prepared for shifts between daytime and evening and make sure to bring wet-weather gear in order to best enjoy your vacation.

This destination is best suited to guests who want to cycle every day. Because of the terrain and/or remoteness of the hotels and riding routes, there are few, if any, non-riding options available. If a non-rider wants to accompany a rider guest on this trip, they would need to spend many hours in the van and/or at the hotels on the trip. There are non-riding options such hiking, walking, sightseeing, sidra tastings and visiting the coast. Non-riding options need to be scheduled before your trip and expenses and/or related transportation to these activities are not included in the trip price. Please contact one of our Trip Consultants at 866 464 8735 for more information and for trip suggestions where more non-rider activities are available, such as:

  • Tour de France
  • Andalucia
  • Cinque Terre
  • Costa Brava

For an additional fee you may request to upgrade to the Trek Emonda SLR with Shimano Di2 electronic shifting or Bontrager Aeolus carbon wheels for the ultimate riding experience. Contact our trip consultants for more details.

Please review our packing list page for more details.

When a trip is booked, a guest confirmation letter is immediately sent out. One week prior to the trip start you will receive an email containing a trip start meeting location reminder and any last minute information that you will need to know before your trip. Once you arrive at your destination Trek Travel staff will brief you on the day-to-day plan for the trip and provide you with daily route guides and a detailed map allowing you to ride with complete confidence and independence.
