We just got back from our Zion weekend. All I can say is WOW! So well done. We were just amazed at how Trek thinks of EVERYTHING! We cannot say enough about the Trip. Our guides, Grant and Grace were amazing. Grant was so knowledgeable about the area. We actually had people on our hike (not from our group) that were asking him questions. Great personality and so perfect for this job. Grace was perfect for the job as well and she and Grant work so well together. We could not believe it was her first trip for Trek. She is an amazing person and born to be a Trek Travel Guide. If you cannot tell, we LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it. We will be back again.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Best Western Abbey Inn at 11:00 AM on the first day of the trip. Once everyone has gathered, you’ll take a 1 hour private shuttle to the desert town of Springdale. Here you will enjoy a picnic of local specialties prepared by your Trek Travel guides. During the picnic your guides will lead you in a short round of introductions, before discussing the rules of bike safety and also offering some specific cycling tips for riding in Utah. Your guides will then ensure you a comfortable fit to your bike, and familiarize you with some of its features. Now Zion awaits! Get on your bike to witness Zion’s iconic monuments—The Watchman, Court of the Patriarchs, Angel’s Landing and Weeping Rock—arriving at the Temple of Sinawava, where the canyon road gives way to the Virgin River. Tonight you and your new travel companions will meet for a drink and a delicious dinner at a Springdale restaurant.

Later, you may decide to tackle the incredible, renowned Angels Landing, head for the challenge of Observation Point, or enjoy a shorter walk to view Weeping Rock or Emerald Pools. With a packed lunch in hand, the day is yours to explore together in the diverse and magnificent Zion landscape, with your guides on-hand to help you decide how to best spend your day. Save some time at the end of the day to visit some of the local shops and galleries or play in the pool at the hotel. Tonight the guides and the kids will head into town for a night of pizza and fun games, leaving the adults free to explore Springdale for a quiet and relaxing dinner on their own.

After the ride it’s onto the bikes (or the van) for an exhilarating descent through the eastern side of Zion National Park, past the Checkerboard Mesa. For the younger set we have a short hike along the Canyon Overlook Trail to round out the morning. At the Zion Tunnel, both riders and hikers will board the Trek Travel van to reach the other side of the tunnel where adults can hop back on their bikes and the kids will shuttle to Springdale for a lunch of your choice. The afternoon is yours to enjoy: explore the town of Springdale's galleries and shops or kick back and enjoy the gorgeous pool and riverside lawn at the Inn. However you spend this time with your family, enjoy your final evening together reminiscing over the weekend’s events with famous Cadillac Margaritas and outstanding southwestern cuisine at local dining mainstay the Bit and Spur.

Desert Pearl Inn

Springdale, Utah

The Desert Pearl Inn offers an oasis of privacy and tranquility right in the heart of Springdale. Each thoughtfully selected detail adds to the feeling of warmth and hospitality at this desert retreat. The beautiful wood seen throughout the grounds is old-growth Douglas fir and redwood reclaimed from the historic Lucin Cutoff railroad trestle that once spanned the north end of the Great Salt Lake. From the relaxing lawn you can watch the river flow past and reflect on this ancient elemental force that slowly carved the magnificent canyon walls.

Arriving

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into St. George, Utah (SGU). You can contact the St. George Shuttle (800 933 8320, www.StGShuttle.com) to schedule a taxi ride from the airport to downtown St. George for approximately $40, one way. Or you can call for a taxi upon arrival at the airport and should expect to pay a similar amount. However, taxis are not necessarily waiting at this small airport so we encourage you to arrange transportation ahead of time for the transfer between the airport and your accommodations.

Alternatively, you may fly into Las Vegas, Nevada (LAS) and shuttle approximately 2 hours to St. George. The St. George Shuttle (800 933 8320, www.StGShuttle.com, $39 per person each way or $49 per person for the Executive Shuttle) will drop you off at their office in downtown St. George, and you can take a taxi to your pre-trip accommodations. When making travel plans from Las Vegas, please note that St. George, Utah is on Mountain Standard Time.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Best Western Abbey Inn (1129 S Bluff Street, St. George, UT 84770) at 11:00 AM on the first day of the trip. If you choose to stay at the Abbey Inn the night before your trip, special rates may be available for Trek Travel guests, depending upon your travel dates. Simply mention Trek Travel when you call the hotel to book. For guests driving to the trip start, please note that you may not leave your vehicle at the Abbey Inn during your trip. Instead, you may contact Temple View RV (800-776-6410, please mention that you are with Trek Travel) to reserve a storage space for your vehicle the length of your trip. It's $10/day or $50 for 5+ days (up to a month). Temple RV is a 0.4 mile walk from the Abbey Inn. Once the luggage has been loaded, you will shuttle 1 hour to the desert town of Springdale. Please have your first day’s riding gear handy and separate from your other luggage to facilitate the bike fitting and ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Desert Pearl Inn (435.772.8888), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. We strongly recommend that you make the scheduled pick-up time, as there are few transport options for the 40 miles to Springdale. However, if this is not possible and you do need to arrange private transportation, we’d suggest you try Southern Utah Scenic Tours (888 404 8687, www.UtahScenicTours.com) or a local car rental company to arrange transportation at your own expense.

Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

Zion enjoys a desert climate, meaning generally much warmer during the day than at night. During April, May and October you an expect daytime highs between 65-85F and nighttime lows between 40-55F. Precipitation chances are generally low, but we recommend bringing rain gear just in case. Light layers and a wind/waterproof shell are good for the day. Warm layers are recommended for the cool nights and early mornings. Packing List»

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: St. George, Utah

While in St. George, take advantage of the spa treatments at the Green Valley Spa or enjoy a round of golf at one of the local courses. There are also a range of beautiful hiking options in the region close to St. George that are well worth exploring, and we’d recommend a visit to Snow Canyon, a state park located 11 miles northwest of town, in addition to Zion National Park which you’ll visit on your trip. St. George is not a very walkable town, so if you plan to spend time here we recommend that you rent a car to get around. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre and post trip hotel:
