Once everyone has gathered, you'll take a two-hour private shuttle to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. Here you will enjoy a picnic lunch prepared by your Trek Travel guides. Your guides will then lead a short round of introductions before discussing the rules of bike safety and offering some specific cycling tips for riding in Utah. They'll ensure you a comfortable fit to your bike, and familiarize you with some of its features. Then, the road awaits! Witness the grandeur of the eastern flanks of Zion National Park from the seat of your bike as you make your way to the Zion Mountain Ranch. This evening, you and your new travel companions will meet for a drink and a delicious farm-to-table meal at the ranch's on-site restaurant, Cordwood. Take in the incredible surroundings as the sun sets over the canyon rim.

Following a delicious breakfast, you will begin today's ride into Zion National Park. Pedal along a red ribbon of road that traces the path of ancient rock formations, past the Checkerboard Mesa, in and out of petrified sand dunes, underneath piñon and ponderosa pines to the famous mile-long Zion tunnel. After a short shuttle ride through the tunnel, you'll hop back on your bike and descend sweeping switchbacks to the floor of Zion Canyon. From here, pedal along the banks of the Virgin River to the Temple of Sinawava and turn your gaze upwards at the towering Navajo sandstone cliffs above. Ride back to the lively desert town of Springdale, where you’ll stop at one of the cafes for a lunch of your choice. This afternoon you may choose to get back into the park on foot by taking advantage of one of the many hiking options. If you aren’t afraid of heights, we recommend the iconic Angel’s Landing, one of the most dramatic hikes you will ever do. Or you may decide to spend your time in the many art galleries and shops of Springdale or simply relax poolside. This evening Springdale’s restaurants are yours to explore for dinner.

Otherwise, choose the challenging Observation Point Trail or a shorter walk to Weeping Rock or the Emerald Pools. Whatever you decide, the choice is yours and your guides will be on-hand to help you plan how to best spend your day and provide lunch on the trail. You’ll spend your final evening together reminiscing over the weekend’s adventures at the Bit and Spur restaurant. St. George Airport (SGU), St. George, Utah

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays.

We recommend that you fly into St. George Airport (SGU). You can contact the St. George Shuttle (800 933 8320, www.StGShuttle.com) to schedule a taxi ride from the airport to downtown St. George for approximately $40, one way. Or you can call for a taxi upon arrival at the airport and should expect to pay a similar amount. However, taxis are not necessarily waiting at this small airport so we encourage you to arrange transportation ahead of time for the transfer between the airport and your accommodations.

Alternatively, you may fly into Las Vegas, Nevada (LAS) and shuttle approximately 2 hours to St. George. The St. George Shuttle (800 933 8320, www.StGShuttle.com, $39 per person each way or $49 per person for the Executive Shuttle) will drop you off at their office in downtown St. George, and you can take a taxi to your pre-trip accommodations. When making travel plans from Las Vegas, please note that St. George, Utah is on Mountain Standard Time.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Best Western Abbey Inn (1129 S Bluff Street, St. George, UT 84770) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. If you choose to stay at the Abbey Inn the night before your trip, special rates may be available for Trek Travel guests, depending upon your travel dates. Simply mention Trek Travel when you call the hotel to book. For guests driving to the trip start, please note that you may not leave your vehicle at the Abbey Inn during your trip. Instead, you may contact Temple View RV (800-776-6410, please mention that you are with Trek Travel) to reserve a storage space for your vehicle the length of your trip. It's $10/day or $50 for 5+ days (up to a month). Temple View RV is a 0.4 mile walk from the Abbey Inn. Once the luggage has been loaded, you will shuttle two hours to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. Please have your first day’s riding gear handy and separate from your other luggage to facilitate the bike fitting and ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Zion Mountain Ranch (866 648 2555), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. We strongly recommend that you make the scheduled pick-up time, as there are few transport options for the 80 miles to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. However, if this is not possible and you do need to arrange private transportation, we suggest you try Southern Utah Scenic Tours (888 404 8687, www.UtahScenicTours.com) or a local car rental company to arrange transportation at your own expense.

The terrain is varied, from relatively level riding along the floor of Zion Canyon to sustained climbing in potentially windy conditions on the east side of the Park. The splendid views make the climbs worthwhile. Zion Long Weekend is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van. Type 3+ Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer.
On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on this trip are:
  • Numerous hiking options in the staggering beauty of Zion National Park
  • Shop in Springdale
  • Relax poolside with a view of red rock cliffs
  • Schedule a spa treatment at the Deep Canyon Spa

See itinerary for specific daily ride distances and elevation options. On all of our vacations, Trek Travel strives to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

Zion has a desert climate, meaning generally much warmer during the day than at night. During April, May and October you can expect daytime highs between 65-85F and nighttime lows between 40-55F, although colder temps are always possible and we strongly encourage you to carefully check the forecast the week before your trip begins. In November highs are normally in the mid-60s and lows in the upper 30s. Please come prepared to ride with gear to suit the coldest temperature in the forecast, since our morning ride starts often take place before the temperatures have begun to warm for the day. Precipitation chances are generally low, but we recommend bringing rain gear just in case as the weather can change quickly. Packing List

Before and After Your Trip

Before: St. George, Utah

While in St. George, take advantage of the spa treatments at the Green Valley Spa or enjoy a round of golf at one of the local courses. There are also a range of beautiful hiking options in the region close to St. George that are well worth exploring, and we’d recommend a visit to Snow Canyon, a state park located 11 miles northwest of town, in addition to Zion National Park which you’ll visit on your trip. St. George is not a very walkable town, so if you plan to spend time here we recommend that you rent a car to get around. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

After: Las Vegas, Nevada

For another kind of vacation fun, we recommend spending some extra time in Las Vegas at the beginning or end of your trip to enjoy this iconic city of American decadence. It is approximately a 2 hour drive from our trip start and finish in St. George, Utah to Las Vegas. There are numerous lodging options in Las Vegas from five-star resorts to small casinos. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:
