Additional Arrival Information
We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your Swiss Alps Gravel bike trip, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Zürich Airport (ZRH). The airport is about seven miles from the town center. You can take a taxi (approximately 50 Swiss francs or 53 USD) directly to the hotel, or a train to Zürich's main railway station. Trains depart every 10 minutes from the airport and the ride takes about 15 minutes to the city center. Another option is to book a direct shuttle bus to your hotel. For more information and prices, visit this website: www.checkin-allways.com .
For more information about Zürich Airport, please visit www.flughafen-zuerich.ch/en/.
To get to your trip's starting location, take a train from Zürich's main railway station (Zürich HB) to Zernez (Zernez Staziun). The train ride takes approximately two hours and 20 minutes. Take the train in the direction of Chur. You'll have to transfer once in Landquart in order to get to Zernez. If you depart at 8:00 AM from Zürich, you should exactly make it to the meeting time at 10:30. Don't worry, Swiss trains are famously always on time! For more information about the train schedule and prices visit the Swiss Federal Railway's website at www.sbb.ch/en. We also highly recommend you download the SBB Mobile app. This is a very easy-to-use train ticket and journey planning app for Switzerland.
Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the railway station in Zernez, Switzerland, at 10:30 AM on the first day of the trip. Your guides will do a bike fitting in a close-by restaurant to ensure your comfort on your Trek Checkpoint this week, before you take your first spin through the valley. Please have your first day’s riding gear handy and separate from your other luggage to facilitate the bike fitting and ride.
If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Hotel Belvedere (+41 81 861 06 06) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. If you can't make it to the meeting point, you can get off the train in Scuol instead of Zernez and let your guides or hotel know that you will be at the railway station in town.
Additional Departure Information
You will say farewell to your guides at 11:30 AM at Conrad's Mountain Lodge. You’ll depart by private shuttle for the railway station in St. Moritz, arriving at around 11:45 AM. You can take a train from here to Zürich or to Zürich airport (there are no direct trains, you will have to transfer in Chur or Landquart). If you choose to take the train to Milan instead of Zürich, you will ride the UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway, and the view will change from glaciers to palm trees, from St. Moritz, through Bernina Pass to Tirano. In Tirano, you will transfer to a direct train to Milan. Riding back to Zürich will allow you to enjoy another part of the UNESCO World Heritage Train, called the Albula line. Please do not book seats before 12:00 PM, allowing adequate connection time for any ongoing travel or possible traffic delays. The airport in Zürich (ZRH is seven miles from the city. You can reach it by train, taxi, or shuttle bus; please do not schedule a flight prior to 7:00 PM. Visit the Swiss Federal Railway's website at www.sbb.ch/en for train information.)
You may wish to extend your holiday in another iconic Swiss mountain village, Zermatt, which you can reach on a long but incredibly spectacular train ride with the Glacier Express, starting in St. Moritz, and finishing in Zermatt.
Explore the Swiss National Park and picturesque mountaineering villages
Overview
Buon di and welcome to Zernez, the gateway to the Swiss National Park and the country’s largest nature preserve. After a personalized bike fit in a restaurant opposite the railway station, you'll enjoy your first ride in the Lower Engadin Valley consisting of a mix of gravel paths and pavement. Marvel as you ride through the region’s Bergsteigerdörfer or "mountaineering villages.” You’ll feel like you’re touring a museum as you pedal past the historic, sgraffito-decorated Engadin houses. After a few climbs to welcome you to the Alps, you will descend to Scuol, the "city of mineral waters” and your home for the next two nights. You'll have time to settle into your room and relax a bit before we regroup for a village walk. We'll taste different mineral waters from the springs and enjoy our social hour in a typical Engadin Stube (parlor), where your guides will share more information about the rest of this week's adventure. Afterwards, return to the hotel for dinner, featuring a feast of local favorite selections.
