Additional Arrival Information
Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Quality Hotel Sogndal (Gravensteinsgata 5, 6856 Sogndal, Norway) at 11:00 AM on the first day of our guided cycling tour in Norway. You and your traveling companions will take a one-hour private Trek Travel shuttle to the Skjolden Hotel, where you'll check in and enjoy a casual lunch over introductions. After a bike fitting, we will set off on a scenic introductory ride into the Fortun valley, before returning back to Skjolden.
We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of our Norway bike tour, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to travel-related delays. We recommend that you arrive to Sogndal by way of Bergen or Oslo.
To arrive from Bergen, you can take a scenic four and a half hour ExpressBoat ferry from Bergen to Sogndal. There is only one afternoon departure from Bergen on the Norway ExpressBoat. ExpressBoat tickets are approximately $98 USD each way and can be purchased online at www.norled.no. We recommend purchasing tickets at least four weeks in advance because the price increases as you get closer to the date. Flights into Sogndal Airport (SOG) from Bergen Airport, Flesland (BGO) can be booked separately on a domestic airline. There is typically one morning and one evening direct flight from BGO to SOG.
To arrive from Oslo, we recommend you book a separate domestic ticket into Sogndal Airport (SOG) from Oslo Airport (OSL). There is usually one morning and one evening direct flight from OSL to SOG.
Sogndal Airport (SOG) is a tiny airport. There is a bus service with scheduled departures from the airport after each flight arrival. No advance booking is required, just pay the driver when you board. The bus ticket costs approximately $10 per person, and you can pay by credit card. From the airport, it is a 20-minute bus drive to Sogndal city center. The end stop is at the bus station which is right across the road from our meeting location, the Quality Hotel. Alternatively, you can arrange a pick-up with Sogndal Taxi (+47 57 67 10 00) by calling in advance, but it will be more expensive.
We highly suggest you make travel arrangements well in advance, and that you plan to arrive a minimum one day prior to the trip start to avoid delays. For more travel options and information, please contact your Trip Consultant.
If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, the Skjolden Hotel (+47 57 68 23 80), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details.
Additional Departure Information
Your guides will say farewell at 11:00 AM before a private transfer takes you back to Quality Hotel Sogndal, approximately 90 minutes away. Please do not schedule any flights out of Sogndal before 3:00 PM. We recommend flying back to Bergen or Oslo and spending the evening exploring before finishing your journey home the following day (Saturday). Please see our pre- and post-trip hotel recommendations for our accommodation suggestions.
If taking the ferry back, there are daily departures from Balestrand to Bergen available with reservation from Norled (https://booking.norled.no/en/book). The ferry port is walking distance from the final trip hotel in Balestrand.
Arrive at the head of Norway's longest fjord, a scene straight from a postcard
Overview
Welcome to western Norway, where mountains crowd the water's edge and glaciers feed the fjords below. Meet your Trek Travel guides at the Quality Hotel in Sogndal at 11:00 AM for a one-hour shuttle north along the Sognefjord, Norway's longest fjord, to Skjolden, the village at its innermost tip. At the Skjolden Hotel, where the beautiful views take center stage, you'll settle in before lunch and introductions to the group. A bike fitting follows to set up your Trek bike for the week, and then we'll roll out along Eidsvatnet, a lake framed by steep cliffs, and into the farmland of the Fortun valley. These sweeping views will give you just a taste of what’s to come. Back at the hotel, we'll gather for a social hour before a farm-to-table dinner drawn from the hotel's kitchen garden and nearby farms, raising a glass to the days ahead.

Trace the Romantic Road to a medieval stave church
Overview
Today follows the Romantic Road along the eastern shore of the Lustrafjord, past waterfalls, small farms, and grazing wildlife, with its glacial green water rarely out of sight. At Urnes, Norway's oldest stave church has stood on the hillside since around 1130, and a guided visit reveals carvings that link Viking-age art with early Christian craft. Afterward, we'll stop for a casual picnic lunch featuring local specialties, with views back across the Lustrafjord. From Urnes, a 20-minute ferry crosses to Solvorn, where you can continue by bike or take the van to BesteBakken, your home for the next two nights. Perched above Lake Hafslo, the family-run hotel still feels like the mountain farm it once was. Tonight we'll dine together as our hosts share stories of life in the fjords over regional home cooking.

Stand beside the ice of mainland Europe's largest glacier
Overview
This morning, a one-hour shuttle carries you up Jostedalen to Nigardsbreen, an arm of Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in mainland Europe. Remarkably, it holds enough fresh water to fill nearly 300 billion bathtubs. At the glacial lake, you can board a small boat for a five-minute crossing before hiking 30–40 minutes to the glacier's edge, the ice filling more of the view with every step. Afterward, we'll regroup at the visitor center for a light café lunch overlooking the valley and surrounding peaks. Then the ride begins, descending toward the fjord and following its shore to the village of Marifjøra. From there, hop in the van or take on the final climb and descent to the hotel, whichever you prefer. Tonight we'll gather again at the hotel for dinner, with the kitchen drawing on local farms and its own garden for summer vegetables and herbs.
Please note: the hike to Nigardsbreen Glacier crosses rocky and slippery terrain. Sure-footedness and sturdy hiking footwear are essential.

Taste farm cider before crossing the fjord by boat
Overview
After breakfast, say goodbye to BesteBakken and ride toward Fimreite, following the outlet of Lake Hafslo down to Sogndal and a new arm of the Sognefjord. A series of punchy climbs along the fjord's edge leads to Haug Gard, the unique family farm behind Odelsgut cider. A tour, tasting, and lunch await here, overlooking the waters where rival kings fought for Norway's crown in 1184. After lunch, you'll trade bikes for a private RIB, a fast, open boat that skims low across the fjord toward Balestrand as your local guide shares stories from the region. As you near the jetty, the ornate white facade of the Kviknes Hotel rises above the waterfront like something from a storybook, marking your home for the next two nights. Dinner is included at the hotel restaurant on your own schedule, leaving the evening free to wander Balestrand's Heritage Trail.

Pedal the shores of three fjords
Overview
Today's route links three fjords in a single ride out of Balestrand. A quiet, winding road traces the shores of the Esefjord, Sværefjord, and Vetlefjord, passing small farms tucked between the mountains and the fjord. The leisurely shoreline route stays close to the water, while those who welcome the extra climbing can turn up the valley at Vetlefjord, following it until the road pitches toward the mountains before turning back. Return to Balestrand for lunch on your own, with a handful of cafés within easy reach of the hotel. In the afternoon, join your guides for a walk through the forest on the Kreklingen nature trail, which rises to views over the village, or simply settle in for a slower afternoon. Tonight we'll toast the week together before one last dinner at the hotel restaurant.
