This is my 5th Trek Travel Trip. With every trip, I say, “Wow, this is the best trip yet!” I’ve encouraged quite a few friends to try Trek Travel and they too are now repeat customers. The trip itineraries are perfect. The cycling amazingly beautiful and perfectly (did I really just say that?) challenging.

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your Provence Self-Guided Bike Tour, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Paris (CDG). From Paris, take a TGV train to Avignon, either from the TGV station at Charles de Gaulle Airport or from the Gare de Lyon in Paris. Alternatively, you may fly into Marseilles (MRS) or Nice (NCE) and travel by train to nearby Avignon. From here we recommend a taxi to Saint-Rémy. (Approx $70)

Your Trek Travel host will meet you at your trip hotel Hotel Van Gogh (1 avenue Jean Moulin, 13210 Saint-Rémy-de-Provence) at 11:00 AM on the first day of the trip. Depending on the number of guests booked for your departure date, it is possible we will ask you to shift your meeting time by approximately 30 minutes. Please have your riding gear readily accessible to avoid having to unpack your luggage. After a trip overview, you may change into your cycling gear where you will then be fitted to your Trek bike ensuring you will be comfortable for the week. Following a safety talk and a review of the details of the route, you will set off at your own pace along the roads of Provence.
If you will be late for the meeting or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your host. If you cannot reach them, please call our hotel, Hotel Van Gogh (+33 4 90 92 14 02) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details.

Your Trip Need to Knows:
Biking in Provence: We want to make sure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience on this trip, so it’s important to note that, at times, the roads we’ll be riding on may be a bit narrow with some traffic. It is important to stay vigilant while taking in the views of this beautiful region. We do our best to design our routes to avoid busy roadways as much as possible, however, urban riding and sections of busy roads are unavoidable for some segments of your rides.
It’s important to keep in mind that service at restaurants can sometimes be slow in France, but don’t let that discourage you! This is all part of the experience and it only adds to the charm of dining in France. Embrace the culture, savor each bite, and enjoy the flavors that make French cuisine so celebrated!
Please note that the bikes you will ride on this trip are aluminium frames with mechanical shifting, which differs from our standard fleet. See the Bikes & Guides section for more information.
Before and After Your Trip
Avignon, France
If you are planning on extending your Provence vacation and exploring the walled city of Avignon, besides enjoying the plethora of café terraces and great shopping and restaurant options, there are a number of must-sees. Palais des Papes stands as the largest Gothic palace in Europe. With the arrival of the popes in the 14th century, for a period known as the Avignon Papacy, the Palais des Papes was home to the Sovereign Pontiffs. One must also visit the nearby Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct that was used to bring Uzès spring water to Nîmes. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:
Where to Stay
Hôtel de Garlande
L'Hotel de Garlande is a boutique hotel nestled in the heart of Avignon. Walking distance from the Palais des Papes and the Pont d'Avignon, this hotel is ideally located to explore the town.

Paris is home to many of the world’s best-known monuments and museums. A backdrop of many famous photos, the Arc de Triomphe sits majestically at the top end of the Champs-Elysées. You can go to the observation deck for an expansive view down the world-famous boulevard from Napoléon’s huge triumphal arch—the largest in the world. The Arc isn’t the only site that offers a great view of the city, however. Other monuments where you can enjoy impressive vistas include the white dome of the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, the 56th floor of the Tour Montparnasse, and of course at the summit of the most famous monument in Paris—la Tour Eiffel. The city also boasts some of the world’s best museums. At the top of the list is the Musée du Louvre where you can visit one of the world’s greatest art collections that include such famous works as the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

Regardless of the month, please note that the region sometimes experiences a famously strong wind, the Mistral, which can drop the temperatures significantly. Packing layers is always recommended.
