Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at AutoCamp Russian River, your home for the next five days. After introductions, we'll board a 30-minute shuttle to arrive to your bikes and the starting point of your adventures. We'll start with a bike fit to your Trek bicycle along with some helpful cycling tips, then set off to Dutcher Crossing Winery for a wine tasting and picnic lunch. After a relaxing meal under the sun, we'll continue riding through the famous wine-growing regions of Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys, known for their robust varietals of deep, rich pinot noir. If you’re up for a challenge, tackle Rockpile Road, a beautiful detour through the Lake Sonoma Recreation Area with views of Lake Sonoma. You’ll pass many distinctive wineries in the Dry Creek Valley, home to more than 50 producers of famous California Zinfandel. Taste wines from the barrel at Zichichi, or sip on cool, crisp, biodynamic sauvignon blanc in Quivira’s solar-powered tasting room. Tonight we will celebrate a great adventure ahead with a catered farm-to-table feast at AutoCamp before you retire to your private Airstream suite under the stars and a canopy of thousand-year-old redwood trees.

Today we'll traverse the Russian River Valley on our way to Armstrong Woods Park, home to 800 acres of historic redwoods. Once we've arrived, there will be plenty of time to stop and admire these majestic, towering, ancient giants and enjoy a hike to visit the oldest (1,400 years old) or the tallest (310 feet high) trees in the park, standing together as a testament to the wonders and resilience of the natural world. The grove offers solace from the hustle and bustle of daily life, with space for quiet reflection and inspiration. Don't forget to stop and sample wines at a variety of wineries including Gary Farrell, Porter Creek, or Armida on your way back! Tonight's dinner will be on your own, with opportunities to head into town nearby or to keep it closer to home with a gourmet barbecue at your campfire under a blanket of stars.

Today we'll follow the tranquil byways over Chalk Hill and through the Alexander Valley, enjoying its rustic simplicity. We'll start by heading south, circumnavigating the charming town of Healdsburg, always within view of endless, fragrant vineyards. Along this stretch of road, you can see the grapes, smell the fermentation, and almost taste the wine. Through this quiet stretch of Chalk Hill and the Alexander Valley, you’ll pass many unique and distinctive wineries and enjoy a tasting at one of our favorites, Alexander Valley Vineyards, before stopping for lunch. Choose to meander at any or all of them either on the way there, or on the way back. The afternoon is yours to explore. Tonight you'll gather with your fellow travelers for a Californian meal of fresh, locally grown produce at Underwood.

Today you'll ride through the Russian River Valley, known for its quiet backroads, scenic bridges, and commitment to cool-weather grapes that yield tantalizingly rich pinot noirs and other robust, fruit-forward varietals. You will follow the Russian River to its outlet at the Pacific coast, which will also serve as the destination for some of our favorite hidden gems for lunch. You’ll have more opportunities today to sample a variety of wines from properties such as Simi, Longboard, or Rockpile. Choose to ride or take a shuttle back, and this afternoon is yours to relax and enjoy the natural beauty outside your Airstream suite. Sadly it's time to bid farewell to this unique experience in the heart of Sonoma, along with all the friends we've made along the way. You’ll say goodbye to your guides at 11:00 AM at the AutoCamp Russian River, before boarding the shuttle to the Santa Rosa Airport, arriving by 11:45 AM.

Guide gratuities are customary and at your own discretion, to recognize service, hospitality, and the little extras that surprise and delight. For this trip, we recommend $200-$250 per guest. While local currency is preferred, there are other options to make tipping easier. Most guides accept gratuity via PayPal or Venmo or our staff can help before or after the trip. Gratuities will be divided among the guide team, so feel free to leave your gratuity with whomever you choose at the end of your trip.

The terrain is generally rolling, with a few flat stretches on quiet, but sometimes narrow, roads. For those seeking more challenging rides, the hills to the east or west of the valley are sure to please even the most avid cyclist. The California Wine Country is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van. Those who wish to ride every mile but are concerned about their physical ability may want to try our electric bike option–you still get a workout but can climb alongside even the strongest rider. Type 3 Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer.
On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on this trip are:
  • Take a winery tour or indulge in wine tasting in a wide variety of wineries
  • Walk and explore the Armstrong Redwoods State Park

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS).

The easiest way to arrive in Guerneville is to book your flight to the Santa Rosa Airport (STS) and take a taxi for about $40. Car rental agencies from the San Francisco Airport (SFO) are currently only offering vehicle drop off to Santa Rosa. There is also car and limo service available at SFO for approximately $300 to get you to Guerneville if you prefer.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you in the lobby of the AutoCamp Russian River at 9:00 AM on the first day of the trip. After a round of introductions, your Trek Travel guides will discuss bike safety and specific cycling tips for riding through the wine country. They’ll spend some time familiarizing you with the Trek bicycle you’ll be riding and we’ll make sure that you and your bike are the perfect fit before cycling to lunch and a tasting.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our hotel, AutoCamp Russian River (855) 942-0792, and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. The Sonoma County Airport Express shuttle (800-327-2024) from SFO to Sonoma County Airport for around $30/person. Taxi from Sonoma County Airport to AutoCamp Russian River is approximately a 17-mile taxi ride.
