Classic Climbs of the Canary Islands Custom

Spain's Gran Canaria Island

Gran Canaria is the cycling Mecca for the world’s most ambitious riders.

It is a heaven for the elite. It’s not even close to flat. It is the Grand Canyon in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, a warm, crevassed landscape with towering cliffs and volcanic calderas that ascend over two-thousand meters above the light, sandy beaches where we begin our rides. The Island is a gem to be discovered, as well as the crucible to test what you have in your legs. Join us for truly epic rides, warm winter weather, and a chance to ride where the pros go to train. When you’re not on the bike, settle in at one luxurious home base for the week. We are perfectly situated on the island to access the most exciting rides while offering relaxing evenings without the necessity of transferring to additional hotels.

You'll start by meeting your guides at Santa Monica Suites Hotel at 12:00 PM in Maspalomas, our home for the next five days. Get to know your guides and fellow riders over lunch before getting fit to your new Trek bike, your bike for the big climbs this week. Your guides will orient you to the island and rides for the week and give you some tips and tricks of riding the pristine but challenging roads of Gran Canaria. We’ll then launch onto our first ride to the Presa de Ayagaures. You’ll enjoy amazing views of the ocean, sky and cliffs, and get a quick introduction to the type of riding we’ll find throughout the island. Tonight, you’ll gather for drinks and an oceanside dinner to cap
off your first day on the island.

On our way home we’ll hone our descending skills along the rocky, cliff-side roads toward Agüimes, crossing over dry arroyos dotted with sure-footed goats. This chapel venerates the Virgen de la Cuevita, the patron saint of both Canarian folklore and cyclists. While enjoying the views we will reach the peak and enjoy lunch in Ayacata before making your way back toward Mogan over the coils of Tauro Pass. Tonight, we dine outside of town to enjoy an artful expression of Spanish cuisine.

before putting on your wind vest and descending toward Cercados de Espinos on perfect pavement before arriving at our lunch spot to fill up on traditional fare for the last few kilometers home. This afternoon, take a stroll along the Maspalomas Dunes Beaches or through the dunes on one of the many trails. Either way, you'll be tempted by an invigorating ocean swim. On all of our vacations, Trek Travel strives to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Gran Canaria is best suited for our Type 4 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 3 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van. Planning For Your Trip

Before and After Your Trip

Before: Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the capital of the island founded in 1478, boasts an important historical and cultural heritage overflowing with Spanish ambience. From long sandy beaches, to the hustle and bustle of city life, and the historical centres of town, you are sure to find a few extra days worth of exploring before your Trek Travel adventure. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel.

After: Tenerife, Spain

There are too many places to list in a short paragraph, but here are some to get you started: Costa Adeje is the new face of Tenerife with a host of four- and five-star hotels, boutiques and beautiful beaches. You'll be faced with nearly endless sunshine and plenty activity to keep you satiated during your vacation. If the sandy beaches aren't your style though, a visit to La Laguna near Santa Cruz should surely be on your list. The former capital of Tenerife is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Alternatively, the northern coast will provide plenty of lush greenery and quiet off the beaten path fishing towns to explore, such as Garachico. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel.
