Finger Lakes Bike Tour
The new, highly acclaimed Lake House on Canandaigua drew our attention to the town of Canandaigua initially--this fresh, stylish property has all the elements of a luxury getaway. Once we began exploring the great roads for riding, the wineries and the fun activities on and around the lakes we knew this was a destination we wanted to share with our guests! Once you arrive here it's obvious why the Seneca named this place Canandaigua, which means "The Chosen Spot."

After meeting your guides this morning your transfers will bring you to a winery near the shores of Seneca Lake. Enjoy a delicious picnic lunch prepared by your guides and a wine tasting if you like. Taste for yourself the dry, mineral-tinged Riesling style of wine that this cool climate wine region is know for. After a short round of introductions, your Trek Travel guides will then discuss the rules of bike safety and ensure a comfortable fit to your Trek bike. The day is then yours to enjoy as you head out on your first ride of the week through the rolling farmland that separates Geneva Lake and Canandaigua Lake. You will ride west as you work your way to the Lake House, situated on the north end of beautiful Canandaigua Lake. Check into your lake view room for the week and relax on your private balcony before joining the group for a welcome social hour. Take in the stunning views while enjoying local wines and beer as your Trek Travel guides fill you in on the exciting details of the days to come. Afterward you’ll get to know your fellow travelers over an unforgettable meal of locally-sourced delights at the upscale onsite restaurant, Rose Tavern.

The Lake House on Canandaigua

Canandaigua, New York

Ultimate Luxury Accommodation | The artfully imagined and impeccably presented Lake House on Canandaigua sits on the northern end of it's namesake lake. The overall design of the property was inspired by summers spent growing up on the lake, according to William Caleo, one of the hotel's designers and member of the Sands Family, which owns the property. Originally home to the Sheraton Motor Lodge, the family began the ground-up, sustainably-minded redesign of the property in 2018 and officially opened the doors of the Lake House in May 2021. The white gabled buildings have a timeless feel and showcase great attention to detail and craftsmanship throughout. The on-site Willowbrook Spa offers an extensive list of tailored treatments and includes two lakeside wooden saunas while the lakefront pool and hot tub anchor the sprawling lawn. Walk down to the boardwalk to see the boats along the pier and enjoy a drink while the evening breezes roll in. This property feels like a well-kept family home that invites you to unpack, relax, and slip into the rhythm of long, slow days.

The terrain around Canandaigua is varied, with gently rolling farmland to the north and east, while the terrain along Canandaigua Lake to the south and west toward Honeoye Lake features more hills and climbing. Our trip is designed to take advantage of the farmland riding on the first three days. Please note that although the terrain is generally gently rolling on these days, the routes do include some short climbs throughout, and riders should be prepared for that. The fourth day of the trip offers the chance to complete the beautiful and challenging loop around Canandaigua Lake. The Finger Lakes region is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van, provided these riders are comfortable riding on roads with traffic and handling their bike on varied terrain. Those who wish to ride every mile but are concerned about their physical ability may want to try our electric bike option–you still get a workout but can climb alongside even the strongest rider. Type 3 Riders will enjoy the extra mileage and climbing the avid route options offer.
NON-RIDING ACTIVITIES:
On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on this trip are:
  • Enjoy the spa, lakefront pool and hot tub, wellness classes, and other amenities at the Lake House
  • Join the group for a wine tasting on Day 1
  • Explore the various shops and breweries in downtown Canandaigua
  • Take a paddleboard or kayak out on Canandaigua Lake
  • Join the group for an evening cooking demo and dinner at New York Kitchen
  • Visit Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park
  • Schedule one of the many outings available through the concierge at the Lake House

See itinerary for specific daily ride distances and elevation options. On all of our vacations, Trek Travel seeks to find quiet, paved, secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

Arriving

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) in Rochester, New York. This regional airport is serviced by most major US domestic carriers. If you are staying at the Hilton Garden Inn Rochester/University & Medical Center (the pickup location on the first day of your Trek Travel trip), you may call the hotel to arrange to be picked up by their complimentary airport shuttle.

For guests driving to the trip, we suggest driving to the Lake House on Canandaigua. Park in the hotel lot and you may drop your luggage at the front desk if you like, so that it may be delivered to your room later in the day. Please let the front desk staff know that you are with Trek Travel. Your guides will pick you up here on the first day of your trip between 10:45am and 11:00am. If you plan to do this please notify your trip consultant, so your guides will be aware of your arrival plans.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Hilton Garden Inn Rochester/University & Medical Center (30 Celebration Dr, Rochester, NY 14620) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. Once everyone has arrived, the group will shuttle approximately 40 minutes to the Lake House on Canandaigua to pick up any guests who may have driven their personal vehicles to the trip. From here the group will shuttle an additional 25 minutes to a winery near the shores of Geneva Lake. Upon your arrival to the winery you will enjoy a delicious picnic lunch and a wine tasting if you like. After lunch, your Trek Travel guides will ensure a comfortable fit to your Trek bicycle for the week before you begin your first ride of the trip. Please have your riding gear in a separate bag, since your luggage will be unloaded at the Lake House on Canandaigua and you will not have access to it during lunch or the bike fit.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call the Lake House on Canandaigua (585-394-7800) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. A taxi from the pickup hotel in Rochester to meet the group at the winery will cost about $150 and take about an hour.
