Welcome to Greece, birthplace of ancient mythical gods and site of one of the world's greatest historical legacies. Your guides will meet you at the hotel in Heraklion where you'll board a short shuttle to Latsida, a tranquil mountain village faithful to local traditions. Here, you'll get your first taste of this region's culture, cuisine, and hospitality with a light lunch. Your guides will then ensure you are comfortable on your Trek bicycle, before embarking on your first adventure for the week. Your ride starts in the mountains, heading through rocky goat pastures and olive groves. It won't be long before you catch your first view of the wide open seaside, at the most southern area of the Aegean Sea. Here you'll descend to Plaka, on a serpentine road that makes for an exhilarating ride with stunning views of the eternal blue sea, reflecting the sun as if it's covered by a shiny vail. Your ride ends at our hotel, the majestic Blue Palace, where the staff will welcome you with a refreshing drink on your way to your room. Enjoy the stunning views from your room before getting together again with the group for our first social hour. Tonight we will dine at the hotel's gastronomic restaurant Anthós, situated right next to the hotel's organic garden. Here you can enjoy the spectacle of the entire cooking team performing in the open-air kitchen as they prepare an elaborate menu that celebrates a new breed of elevated Greek cuisine.

Today's Ride:

Latsida to Plaka
Approximately 12 miles with 1,100 feet of climbing

Hotel:

Blue Palace

Included Meals:

Lunch | Social Hour | Dinner

Awake today before the stunning views of the wide-open sea outside your window. Breakfast this morning is an abundant buffet served in Olea restaurant, a tasteful space named after the olive trees that decorate the entire restaurant. Fuel up on some traditional breakfast kalitsounia and tahini pies or some yogurt with local honey. Afterward, you'll board a shuttle to a small village to depart on our ride for the day. Grab a Greek coffee, and then set off toward the mountainous forest. It's hard to believe that such a forest exists just a few kilometers away from the sea. The pine and cedar tree-lined climb will lead to a balcony road and the views only get more impressive as we move inland. Opt for a climb toward Kalamafka or head straight for Kritsa, a village named after Kritsopoulla, a local girl who became a hero during the Ottoman occupation of the island. Her home today is a museum, which you are free to visit. At Kritsa, you'll be welcomed in the home of a local couple, who farm everything from the fresh lemons to the cheeses, from the olive oil to the raki, and more. Under the shade of the vines and lemon trees, we will learn how to prepare an authentic Cretan meal, which you'll enjoy over a lunch that is accompanied with old tales of the village, happily narrated by Mr. Manolis. This afternoon, you'll take a trip back in history, as we will visit the ruins of an ancient Greek citadel that was once one of the most important city-states of Crete. The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisure at the luxurious hotel. Perhaps lounge at the beach bar and treat yourself to some natural thalassotherapy in the sea, or dip in one of the stunning pools of the property. For dinner tonight, stroll into Plaka with a list of our recommendations and discover your ideal seafront tavern. Your only problem will be wanting to try them all!

It's time for something completely different today - a sailing excursion into the sun and sea. After a beautiful breakfast with a direct view of the Spinalonga island in front of you, you'll head to the small fishing port of Plaka and get a lift on a caïque, a traditional fishing boat that will take you the short distance across the sea to the island. You'll meet our local guide who will introduce you to the history and passions of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Besides housing a 16th century Venetian fortress, Spinalonga was also once an isolation colony, during the leprosy epidemic of the early 20th century. During that time it also became a symbol of hope and perseverance for the aspiration that the sun always rises after a dark night. After the tour, we will swap our humble fisherman's caïque for a much more comfortable one and set off for a cruise in the alluring Mirabello Bay. Enjoy the sun, stop for a swim, and indulge in a signature Trek Travel picnic on the boat. For anyone not interested in a boat excursion, or looking for more miles on the bike, we have you covered! A five minute boat ride will drop you off at the hotel where you can get ready for the guided ride option of the day. The ride is heading inland to the northern mountains, which are so quiet and remote that goats roam freely around the fields and the small roads in search of new pastures. You'll pass by small villages where you can enjoy a coffee at a local kafeneio. After that, you'll stop for lunch with everyone in another gem of a town before swapping the small mountain roads for an open and scenic descent down to the shimmering coast. This evening join the group for a feast of the senses at the traditional tavern, the Blue Door. It's Greek night here and the sirtaki melodies will accompany us for the entire night, while "antikristo" lamb will be in preparation in a fire pit on the ground - a true spectacle for the barbecue lovers. Raise a glass of raki with old and newfound friends and allow yourself to get carried away in happiness by the cheerful rhythm of the bouzouki.

TERRAIN: HILLY
The terrain is a mix of rocky coastline, plains, and hills. The winding roads offer some gorgeous views! We typically cycle along narrow, quiet roads, but surfaces can vary from somewhat rough country roads to smooth, newly paved larger roads. Our Greece bike tour is best suited for our Type 3 riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 1 and 2 riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van. Those who wish to ride every mile but are concerned about their physical ability may want to try our electric bike option–you still get a workout but can climb alongside even the strongest rider. Type 3+ Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer.
NON-RIDING ACTIVITIES:
On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on our Greece bike tour are:
  • Explore the small fishing port town of Plaka or relax poolside at the hotel
  • Explore the island of Spinalonga on a private walking tour
  • Participate in a farm-to-table cooking demonstration in the home of a local friend of Trek Travel
  • Sail the waters of Elounda Gulf for a morning
  • Visit the archaeological site of Lato, an ancient Greek citadel
  • Hike the path along the caldera of Santorini
  • Go shopping in Oia, the most scenic and artistic town in Santorini
  • Spend a day at the beach and swim in the crystal clear waters of the Aegean sea
  • Spend a day in one of the hotels' luxurious spas

See itinerary for specific daily ride distances and elevation options. On all of our vacations, Trek Travel seeks to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

Leaving

You will say farewell to your guides at 11:00 AM at your hotel, OMMA Santorini Luxury Boutique Hotel. You’ll then take a private shuttle to the airport in Santorini arriving at 11:30 AM. Please do not book flights before 2:30 PM allowing adequate time for any ongoing travel or possible traffic delays.

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: Heraklion, Greece

Once the center of the ancient Minoan civilization, the Heraklion of today is the urban capital of Crete. This port city hides millennia of history beneath its modern trappings. The Palace of Knossos, one of the most significant remains of the Minoan civilization, is a sight not to be missed but there is no shortage of Minoan and medieval relics such as the seaside Koules Fortress with its seven bastions, as well as Turkish fountains that decorate the city since its Ottoman occupation. The countryside is speckled with vineyards and wineries as Heraklion is the most prominent wine region in all of Crete. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

after

After: Athens, Greece

A trip to Greece would not be complete without a few days spent in the center of its civilization. Athens is a city with the perfect balance of ancient grace and contemporary cool. On one hand, it is dominated by spectacular fifth-century B.C. landmarks; first and foremost the celebrated Acropolis, the greatest symbol of the glory of Ancient Greece and democracy itself. This hilltop citadel is filled with ancient buildings and temples, such as the alluring Parthenon. There is no shortage of these sites such as the ancient Agora, the temple of Olympian Zeus, and Filopappou Hill. On the other hand, Athens is boasting with lively streets filled with cafes, bars, and restaurants that are bursting with local culture and contemporary character. On a visit to Athens, don't omit walking the streets of Monastiraki and Plaka neighborhoods. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:
