Ojai to Santa Barbara

California's Central Coast

Breathe deeply, and let the calming energy of Ojai take over. If you've never heard of Ojai (pronounced "OH-HI"), you're in for an undiscovered delight. This is where hippie meets happy. Here, artists, philosophers, farmers, historians and bohemians conspire to escape the rat race and find their modern chi. Of course, this is still the California Coast, so get used to the fact that calming energy will combine with elegance and luxury. You’ll feel it too, as you sink into decadence at the award-winning Ojai Valley Inn with its gorgeous landscape, pool with a view, tranquil, full-service spa, artist’s cottage and apothecary, golf course and the list goes on. While you may want to escape the grid and get your mail forwarded here permanently, before you know it, we’ll be descending from the mountains to the sea as we head for Santa Barbara, the American Riviera. There’s nothing more invigorating than this picture-perfect ride from Ojai to Santa Barbara along the coastal bike path. Enjoy more fresh, local nouveau Californian cuisine as we explore the trendy Funk Zone, with its near-bottomless wine list and local charcuterie. Pedal high above the Pacific Ocean where every curve rewards you with another show-stopping view. Your shoulders have lifted. Your energy is high. Your chakras are in balance. And for a brief, fleeting and perfect pink moment, all is calm with the world.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Hotel Californian at 11:30 AM on the first day of the trip. After a 45-minute shuttle to Ojai, you’ll get acquainted with your fellow travelers over a signature Trek Travel picnic prepared by your guides, complete with local, seasonal ingredients. Afterward, your guides will spend some time familiarizing you with your Trek bicycle to ensure a comfortable fit for the week. Then it’s time for a warm-up spin in the Ojai Valley which will end at your exquisite accommodations for the next two nights -- the Ojai Valley Inn. This resort is one of Travel & Leisure’s World’s Best Hotels and is a favorite among our most discerning guests, perfect for friends, couples and groups looking for some carefree, timeworn magic. This evening, we'll treat you to drinks and a sumptuous dinner of ever changing, locally sourced, Californian cuisine at The Oak, overlooking the beautifully manicured grounds of the Inn. As the sun sets, pause to bask in the glow of Ojai's "pink moment" where the sun bathes the Topa Topa mountains in vibrant, lavender-pink hues as it descends across the Pacific Ocean.

Welcome to your first full day of Ojai tranquility. You'll ride the Pixie tangerine and Valencia orange-lined roads around this boho bedroom community, underneath the lumbering mountains surrounding this small valley on our way to Ojai Olive Oil Company. Sample these olive oils, freshly pressed and fragrant, and you may never buy another brand. Our olive oil expert, Alice, is a transplant from another time, and she’ll teach us the backstory of how this region became a unique supplier of premium oils. Afterward, head over to the tasting room and gift shop for some keepsakes and delicious reminders of our visit. Today is your chance to stroll along the Ojai’s Spanish-style shopping arcade, with its artsy shops beckoning you in, while freshly-pressed, local olive oils and honey compete for your palette’s attention. For lunch today, you get to choose from Ojai’s plethora of interesting options. If you are up for more riding, head out for a gradual climb along Highway 33 toward Wheeler Springs. This afternoon you'll have time to explore the town on your own or discover one of the many hotel amenities available, like a round of golf, massage at the award-winning spa (please note: advanced reservations are recommended and cost is not included in trip price), yoga and more. Regardless of what you choose, when the bells sound just before sunset, take a seat to capture the pink moment once again. Hotel Californian

Santa Barbara, California

Flourish. Romance. Panoramic coastal views. This hotel may be called the Californian, but it's pure Santa Barbara from its Funk Zone location to its two signature restaurants. You'll lavish in every luxurious touch, whether it's taking a break on the rooftop pool with a panoramic view of the palm trees and Pacific shoreline or treating your skin to a decadent purist oil blend at the surreal spa. This is truly one of the most impressive, incredible hotel options we've ever offered. The rooms are a magical mix of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and Moroccan flourishes, with modern touches from celebrity designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard. And even the facade tells a special story, with history dating back to the original 1925 hotel itself. Will it make you fall in love with the city? No doubt. Will you want to leave and actually see the sights? That might be up for debate.

The terrain is widely varied, from flat, oceanside riding to rolling hills, and the steeper climbs around Santa Barbara and Ojai. The routes are designed so the harder riding is available on avid routes and the shorter rides feature the least hilly terrain. Ojai to Santa Barbara is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van. Those who wish to ride every mile but are concerned about their physical ability may want to try our electric bike option–you still get a workout but can climb alongside even the strongest rider. Type 3 Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer.
On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on this trip are:
  • Olive Oil Tasting
  • Wine Tasting
  • Spa

On all of our vacations, Trek Travel strives to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

In an average year Santa Barbara enjoys over 300 days of sunshine. Expect temperatures in the mid 60s to upper 70s during the day and the mid 40s to mid 50s at night. Ojai, sitting further inland within a valley, you can expect very warm temperatures during the summer months with averages 20 degrees higher. Please prepare for a large disparity in temperatures.
