Palm Springs & Joshua Tree National Park AutoCamp Bike Tour
Many of the guests in our group choose this trip because of the AutoCamp option….the first night’s dinner was awesome! It really was amazing to spend the night in the desert, see the stars, sit by the fire, and enjoy the outdoors and then have a warm comfy bed and full bathroom. I would stay in another Autocamp location for my next trip!

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs Hotel at 9:00 AM on the first day of the trip. After a 5-minute shuttle, you'll arrive at Ruth Hardy Park where your guides will lead a short round of introductions. Then they will discuss bike safety and specific cycling tips for riding in the Coachella Valley before familiarizing you with your Trek bicycle and ensuring a comfortable fit. You'll begin your ride by spinning to the Palm Springs Visitor's Center, where you'll have the option to add the climb up to the aerial tramway station, a climb once featured in the Tour of California. Next, head to lunch at Palm Greens Cafe, a local and natural foods restaurant located in downtown Palm Springs. After lunch you'll take a short stroll around the Moorten Botanical Garden where you can see and begin to learn about all of the local cacti growing outside and inside their one-of-a kind "Cacterium." Then you'll ride a few miles to The Rowan, where you can change out of your cycling clothes and prepare for the 50-minute shuttle to the town of Joshua Tree. Here you will find your own private Airstream in the desert at AutoCamp Joshua Tree. Take some time to settle into your unique modern suite, complete with private bath, kitchen space, and outdoor dining area. This first evening’s social hour and dinner will be a private affair, hosted in the Mojave Dome on-property. Get to know your fellow travelers over drinks and a catered meal as you take in the beauty of your first night in the desert.

Enjoy breakfast on your personal dining patio this morning before preparing for your first full day in Joshua Tree National Park. If today is your first visit to this exquisite area, be prepared to experience a landscape unlike any you have seen before. Today we will enjoy the northern side of the park, with a ride through some of its most notable areas and plenty of chances to see the iconic Joshua Tree. We'll start with a 20-minute shuttle to the Oasis Visitor's Center in Twentynine Palms, where you can decide where you would like for your ride to begin. If you're feeling up for a climb to start the day, you can begin at the park's North Entrance Station. Alternatively you may choose to begin at Skull Rock and take a moment to explore the nature trail here before taking off on your ride. Ascend to Keys View, which offers an amazing view of the valley, including a panorama of mountain ranges and the San Andreas Fault. We'll then make our way to Hidden Valley for lunch and eventually back to the town of Joshua Tree to check out the national park visitor's center and stroll around this funky town. You are on your own for dinner this evening so you'll have time to explore town on your own. The terrain ranges from flat to rolling with some longer climbs in the national park on Days 2 and 3. Downtown Palm Springs is an urban environment and the rides that start and/or finish at the Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs feature some urban riding on roads with traffic, although roads with bike lanes are used as much as possible. Our Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park trip is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, provided these riders are comfortable with the urban-style riding as described above. Those who wish to ride every mile but are concerned about their physical ability may want to try our electric bike option–you still get a workout but can climb alongside even the strongest rider. Type 3 Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer.
NON-RIDING ACTIVITIES:
On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on this trip are:
  • Lounge by the hotel pool
  • Take a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
  • Hike through numerous preserves, Mount San Jacinto State Park or Joshua Tree National Park
  • Book an Architecture Tour
  • Visit Botanical Gardens
  • Indulge yourself with a Spa Treatment or Massage

See itinerary for specific daily ride distances and elevation options. On all of our vacations, Trek Travel seeks to find quiet, paved secondary roads, or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

We recommend you fly into Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) which was named one of "America's Most Stress-Free Airports" by Smarter Travel.

Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

In October, you can expect generally sunny weather with an average high temperature of 90 degrees and lows in the low 60s; these numbers drop by about 10 degrees in November. Daytime temperatures are 10-15 degrees cooler on the north side of Joshua Tree National Park, where you will spend the second and third days of the trip. Due to the significant temperature differences between morning and mid-day (and between Palm Springs and the north side of the park) we suggest dressing in layers and be sure to bring your cool-weather cycling gear for the higher elevations of the park. Since the weather can vary greatly from week to week we strongly suggest checking the weather forecast right before your trip so you can pack appropriately. Packing List
