Today we will enjoy the northern side of Joshua Tree National Park, with a ride through some of the most notable areas of the park and plenty of chances to see the iconic Joshua Tree. We'll start with a one-hour shuttle to the Oasis Visitor's Center in Twentynine Palms, where you can decide where you would like for your ride to begin. If you're feeling up for a climb to start the day, you can begin at the park's North Entrance Station. Alternatively you may choose to begin at Skull Rock and take a moment to explore the nature trail here before taking off on your ride. Ascend to Keys View, which offers an amazing view of the valley, including a panorama of mountain ranges and the San Andreas Fault. Historically, this area was a favorite hideout of cattle rustlers and there are plenty of natural rock outcroppings guaranteed to amaze. From there, it's an hour's drive back to our hotel. Then, it's time to walk back to uptown for a final dinner and drinks on the patio at Copley's on Palm Canyon. TERRAIN: UNDULATING
The terrain ranges from flat to rolling with some longer climbs in the national park on Day 2 and 4. Downtown Palm Springs is an urban environment and the rides that start and/or finish at our hotel feature some urban riding on roads with traffic, although roads with bike lanes are used as much as possible. Our Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park trip is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, provided these riders are comfortable with the urban-style riding as described above. Those who wish to ride every mile but are concerned about their physical ability may want to try our electric bike option–you still get a workout but can climb alongside even the strongest rider. Type 3 Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer.
NON-RIDING ACTIVITIES:
On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on this trip are:
  • Lounge by the hotel pool
  • Take a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
  • Hike through numerous preserves, Mount San Jacinto State Park or Joshua Tree National Park
  • Book an Architecture Tour
  • Visit Botanical Gardens
  • Indulge yourself with a Spa Treatment or Massage

See itinerary for specific daily ride distances and elevation options. On all of our vacations, Trek Travel seeks to find quiet, paved secondary roads, or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

During February and March you can expect generally sunny weather with mid-day temperatures averaging 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and cooling off at night into the high 40s or low 50s in Palm Springs. In October, the average high temperature is 90 degrees and the lows are in the low 60s; these temps drop by about 10 degrees in November. Daytime temperatures are 10-15 degrees cooler on the north side of Joshua Tree National Park, where you will spend time on the second and fourth days of the trip. Due to the significant temperature differences between morning and mid-day (and between Palm Springs and the north side of the park) we suggest dressing in layers and be sure to bring your cool-weather cycling gear for the higher elevations of the park. Since the weather can vary greatly from week to week we strongly suggest checking the weather forecast right before your trip so you can pack appropriately. Packing List
