Phenomenal Riding! Many of the climbs and descents were so beautiful. I was so happy to be there, in that beauty, by my own power, that I did not know whether to laugh or cry in pure joie de vivre.

We recommend that you meet your guides at the meeting point in Hotel Parador de Hondarribia (Plaza de Armas, 14, 20280 Hondarribia, Guipúzcoa) between 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM the day before your trip starts to get a custom fit to your Trek bike (and if you wish, go for the self-guided warm-up ride on the famous climb, Jaizkibel). Alternatively, you can wait until the group meets today, the first official day of the trip, for your bike fit. Begin your cycling adventure from the quaint village of Hondarribia, but before you do, take a moment to marvel at the beauty of the Basque Spanish coast. You'll soon cross the Bidasoa river to France and experience the lush greenery and rolling hills of the Basque country. The climb starts from the coast and winds through pastures filled with grazing sheep and signature white Basque farmhouses. After arriving at Saint-Palais, a charming market town dating back to the 12th century, you'll gather for social hour and dinner as your guides brief you on the exhilarating and challenging week ahead.

After a nice downhill, you'll ride along the Saison River, climbing and passing through quaint pastoral villages where sheep cheese production is the main source of work and income. Enjoy lunch in the remote valley along the Route du Fromage to fuel up for the second half of the day. You’ll ride through the largest broadleaf forest in Europe en route to Col de Izarbe, your final summit of the day with views of Pic d’Arias on the French and Spanish border. You’ll reconvene with the rest of the group for dinner at your hotel in Oloron-Saint-Marie, a 1st-century village that is home to the Lindt Chocolate Factory and the confluence of two Pyrenean mountain rivers, Gave d’Aspe and Gave d’Ossau.

Later you'll also pass the Neoclassical spa town of Eaux-Bonnes before the next historic and challenging climb - Col d’Aubisque. You’ll climb Aubisque from the "hard" side which starts out relatively easy until after the Cascade de Valentin where you’ll be confronted by thigh-burning 13% grades. If the riding doesn't take your breath away, then the stunning views found on a clear day certainly will! At the summit you will enjoy a warm and hearty mountain refuge lunch before continuing to the second half of the day's ride. You'll welcome the long descent through Col du Soulor to give your legs a break. Enjoy the views as you reach our next hotel in the village of Saint-Savin for a well-deserved rest and a hearty meal.

Prepare for climbing today on a Tour de France Queen Stage! Today you'll take on Tourmalet, Col d’Aspin, and Col de Peyresourde, three epic climbs that have been regularly featured in the Tour de France. You’ll begin your day riding along the Gavarnie river with astonishing views of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, one of the most majestic summits in the Hautes-Pyrénées. You'll head towards Luz-Saint-Sauveur which sits at the base of the renowned Col du Tourmalet, the highest pass traversable by a vehicle and home of the largest ski area in the Pyrenees. After reaching the summit you will have an exhilarating descent, then you'll climb halfway up Col d’Aspin where you will be stopping for lunch. After lunch you will finish the climb up to the cow-grazing peak of Col d’Aspin with absolutely breathtaking views. Once again enjoy a swooping descent down to Arreau, the former capital of ancient Aragon. The final climb up to Col de Peyresourde will test your best after the first two climbs already in the legs. The feeling at the summit is second to none knowing what was accomplished today. A warm meal and cozy bed awaits you after zipping down into the famous spa town of Bagnères-de-Luchon.

Work out any kinks with an indulgent massage and then enjoy the swimming pool and spend the afternoon at your leisure. The area offers other activities for an afternoon of fun—take a gondola ride up to the ski station of Superbagneres, paragliding, caving, climbing and hiking are just a few of the options. Whatever you decide, this is your day to do as little - or as much - as you want. (Please note that some of these extra activities require advance reservations and are not included in the trip price. Today you'll say au revoir to France and hola as you head into Spain! You’ll enter the Val d’Aran from atop the wooded Col du Portillon. This valley is on the French side of the Pyrénéan watershed but - under Spanish rule - was cut-off from the outside world for centuries. Your biggest challenge of the day is Puerto de la Bonaigua, a Category 1 climb and the highest mountain you’ll climb in Spain. A barren and broad landscape stretches before you as you wind your way down the valley to one of the premier whitewater rafting spots in Europe, La Noguera Pallaresa. You’ll end the day in the luckiest town in Spain, Sort (meaning "luck" in Catalan). Sort attracts Spaniards from all over the country, who buy their lottery tickets here in hopes of becoming the next El Gordo winner. Tonight you’ll regroup in town with your traveling companions to enjoy some typical Catalan cuisine and tapas.

Continue pedaling up through the valley with the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park on your right and the Andorra mountain giants on your left. Alongside the roads you'll also often see goat-like chamois precariously perched or maybe locals out foraging for mushrooms. End your day in Puigcerda. Puig meaning "hill" in Catalan and Cerda derives from Cerdanya region where the town resides. The village perched with perfect views of the Pyrenees mountains and the peak of the Pedraforca in the distance. Enjoy a nice relaxing spa or a stroll along the lake before exploring the village and a dinner of your choosing.

Dive into the day and explore the many sights you pass on your ride through this intriguing and unique region of the Pyrenees. First up is the climb to the top of La Molina ski station and Coll de la Creueta, a 14-mile HC climb. This seemingly endless climb eventually drops you into a quiet valley with views of the stand-alone mountain of Pedraforca, as you ride past the remote village of Castellar de n’Hug. This area is known for the Fonts del Llobregat, the source of the Llobrregat river and one of the most important waterways in all of Catalonia. As you make your way south along the remote and beautiful Catalan roads, you will slowly notice the change in flora with the first sighting of the famous cork trees. Enjoy a typical Spanish late lunch along the way before reaching the larger Medieval town of Vic, famous for its Romanesque churches. This is the start of your final climb into the peaceful setting next to the Sau Reservoir and the panoramic views of the Guillerias Mountains where you will rest up in the traditional style of a Catalan country house before your final ride of the journey to the Mediterranean Sea!

Here, you'll ceremoniously conclude your ride by again dipping your toes or a full body plunge in the sea. While overlooking the clear blue waters with your fellow riding companions, you’ll toast to your conquest of the magnificent Pyrenees with a traditional glass of cava then enjoy a farewell dinner as the sun sets behind the mighty jagged peaks you’ve just traveled.

TOTAL MILES:
869 kilometers / 540 miles
AVERAGE DAILY ELEVATION:
2,440 meters / 7,116 feet
TOTAL ELEVATION:
19,520 meters / 64,042 feet
TERRAIN: MOUNTAINOUS
The terrain is mountainous and challenging, with sustained climbing in all kinds of weather. We’ll tackle rolling foothills as well as "hors catégorie" peaks, in the end, scaling the equivalent height of Mt. Everest—twice. Our highest point of the trip is Col du Tourmalet, just shy of 7,000 feet (2,115 meters). Roads will be winding, narrow, and steep at times, and rarely ever level. Pyrenees Coast to Coast is best suited for our Type 4 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also accommodate Type 3 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van.
NON-RIDING ACTIVITIES:
This destination is best suited to guests who want to cycle every day. Because of the terrain and/or remoteness of the hotels and riding routes, as well as point-to-point routes, there are no non-riding options available. If a non-rider wants to accompany a rider guest on this trip, they would need to spend many hours in the van on winding mountain roads for the duration of the trip. Due to this, we strongly discourage non-riders from this destination. As an alternative, call a Trek Travel Trip Consultant at 866.464.8735 for trip suggestions where more non-rider activities are available, such as:
  • Costa Brava
  • Piedmont
  • Provence
  • Portugal

See itinerary for specific daily ride distances and elevation options. On all of our vacations, Trek Travel seeks to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

Averages and totals are calculated from our Avid Ride options.

Arriving

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays.

The trip begins in Hondarribia, Spain. We recommend that you fly into Bilbao International airport, Spain (BIO). Bilbao is 60 miles away from Hondarribia. The drive will take one hour and a half and the taxi price will vary between €85 and 120€. Alternatively, you could take a flight to San Sebastian (EAS) that has direct flights from Barcelona (BCN), Madrid (MAD), or London (LGW). From San Sebastian airport, it is a five-minute taxi to Hondarribia. For train information check www.renfe.com/es/en.

As the trip ends in the Costa Brava region of Spain, with a shuttle drop-off in Girona, we recommend booking your return flight from Barcelona Airport (BCN). There are hourly trains from Girona to the downtown Barcelona Sants Station, and the trip takes about an hour. From the station, you can connect to the airport by a 20-minute train ride. For further information, consult www.renfe.com/es/en.

Your room at Hotel Parador de Hondarribia (Plaza de Armas, 14, 20280 Hondarribia, Guipúzcoa) will be ready for check-in from 3:00 PM the afternoon prior to the first day of your trip. Your Trek Travel guides will be on hand to welcome you and get you fitted on your Trek bike between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. This pre-bike fitting is not mandatory but highly recommended if your travel schedule allows. Please bring your cycling shoes plus your helmet, pedals, and saddle if you plan to use your own. In case you want to ride after the fitting, you can bring your riding gear for a self-guided warm-up ride. The bike fitting is located in the courtyard. Once you arrive at the hotel, please ask the reception to direct you to the rear parking area. If you can't make this pre-bike fitting, you will be fit to your bike on the first day of the trip at 8:30 AM. Please have your cycling gear handy and separate from your other luggage to facilitate the bike fitting and ride on the first riding's day.

If you are going to be late for the bike fit or are going to miss the meeting altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel in Saint-Palais, Hôtel de la Paix (+33) 5 59 65 73 15, and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. You could arrange a taxi from San Sebastian (62 miles) to Saint-Palais. The journey will take one hour and a half and approximately 200€. You also could take the train but it will require at least three transfers.

Please note: One night stay at the Hotel Parador de Hondarribia the day before the trip starts is included in the trip price. There is also an optional self-guided warm-up ride this day that will help ensure that your bike is well adjusted and your legs are ready to go!

Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

The weather varies considerably across the Pyrenees. The French side to the west is wetter, and the eastern Spanish slopes are much drier and warmer. Late summer can bring warm days, ranging from the 60s to low 80s (16C - 27C), with evenings dropping to the 50s to mid 60s (13 - 18C). It is best to be prepared for variable conditions, as weather can change very quickly, and there is always the chance of rain. We recommend always traveling with rain gear, as well as plenty of breathable layers to provide warmth should the temperature drop at any point during the cycling tour across the Pyrenees. Packing List

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: Bilbao, Spain

Explore Bilbao before your trip with these must-see attractions. This capital of the Basque country is a major city with a skyscraper-lined downtown but has a small city feel, combining modern city life with natural beauty. Visit Palacio Euskalduna and the stunning Cathedral of Bilbao with its Gothic beauty. Art enthusiasts should check out the Fine Arts Museum and Basque Museum, but don't miss the iconic Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Gehry. It's as captivating on the outside as it is inside. Enjoy city views on the funicular, savor as many pinxto bars as possible, stroll Casco Viejo's winding streets, and have a drink in the bustling Plaza Nueva. Bilbao truly has it all! We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

after

After: Barcelona, Spain

The Catalonian capital of Barcelona boasts a beautiful coastline, diversity of culture, leisure, and shopping, creative, innovative gastronomy and an avant-garde spirit. Be sure to check out some of the fantastic architecture and art of Antonio Gaudi, such as Sagrada Familia or Parc Guell. The Gothic quarter is the heart of Barcelona’s old town, with narrow cobbled streets on which Picasso and Miró lived long ago. Las Ramblas is a long, tree-lined shopper’s paradise that leads to the sea. Be sure to check out the fascinating Boqueria market as well.
