Overall, the cycle tour in South Dakota is a stunning adventure....[We enjoyed] a spectacular ride through the Badlands followed by an even more scenic ride through Custer State Park the next day. We also got an up-close view of longhorn sheep and buffalo. You couldn't ask for a better guides like Rae and Levi or for better scenic rides than South Dakota in the fall under the watching eyes of the Mt. Rushmore Memorial!

Welcome to your South Dakota bike tour! Get ready for a week of exploring this diverse and utterly beautiful destination. Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at 9:30 AM at Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City before you make your way to Badlands National Park for a spectacular ride. After a one hour shuttle, you’ll arrive in Wall, where you will have time to stroll through town and take a peek at the local attraction, Wall Drug, while your guides prepare a signature Trek Travel picnic. After lunch, your guides will familiarize you with your Trek bicycle to ensure a comfortable fit and off you'll go! Today's ride features an undulating ribbon of road that winds through Badlands National Park, where the Great Plains give way to a geologic wonderland of colorful rock formations. The park is home to one of the world's richest fossil beds as well as a wide array of wildlife. Enjoy stunning views of sharply eroded buttes and spires as you pedal along, and keep your eyes peeled for prairie dogs, bison, and bighorn sheep. Take your time and stop at the overlooks to take it all in. We'll regroup at the final overlook and shuttle approximately 90-minutes to Under Canvas, your glamping headquarters in the heart of the Black Hills. Their helpful staff will familiarize you with the property and help you get settled into your comfortable tent. This evening, we will gather at camp for social hour and a delicious dinner. Afterwards, we'll enjoy s'mores around a fire pit surrounded by pines, and your guides will fill you in on what's in store the rest of this amazing adventure!

Afterwards, we'll head north on the trail to the stunning Crazy Horse Memorial, where you'll have a chance to learn about the legacy of this great Native American warrior. Today is an epic day from end to end! After breakfast, we’ll head to Mt Rushmore where you will have a chance to get a closeup view of the iconic mountain. The 60-foot sculptures of four U.S. Presidents are almost 80 years old and took 14 years to complete using jackhammers and munitions to carve into sheer granite. Avid cyclists will depart by bike and tackle the first 13 miles of challenging terrain, including a few miles of gravel roads, between here and Sylvan Lake. Today’s ride begins at Sylvan Lake, where one look at the crystal blue water surrounded by rounded granite rock formations reveals why it's known as the "Crown Jewel" of Custer State Park. You’ll thread through the Needles Eye tunnel and enjoy a long, gradual descent through a forest of birch, pine, and aspen trees accented with dramatic granite spires. You'll pass the Black Hills Playhouse, a historic theater founded in 1946, it is well-known for its beautiful setting and big-time productions. Just when you think the riding can't get any better, we turn onto another scenic gem called Iron Mountain Road. This road was built to showcase the beauty of the Black Hills and you’ll see why as you ride through tunnels that frame distant views of Mt Rushmore. We'll stop for lunch at the Iron Mountain picnic area, and afterwards, your efforts will be rewarded with a spiraling descent through the famous “pigtail bridges” built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1932. For the short option, your guides will offer strategic shuttles so you can bypass the hardest climbing and still ride the best portions of the route. Tonight, we will shuttle to dinner at Skogen Kitchen in Custer. This tiny gem offers the best cuisine in the Black Hills and is the perfect place for your final dinner of the trip!

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning and get ready for your final excursion in the Black Hills. We'll check-out after breakfast and hop in the van for a short drive to Sheridan Lake, where we'll set out for a flat yet scenic hike on the Flume Trail. The trail starts off through the forest along the shore of this beautiful 375-acre lake. We'll soon reach the bed of the historic Rockerville Flume, an 1880s gold-rush era water channel used for placer mining. The trail features historic artifacts and parts of the flume itself, including two original tunnels. We'll continue along Spring Creek over a couple small bridges and across the dam before meeting the Trek Travel van at the Dakota Point trailhead. From here, it's a short drive to Rapid City, where sadly, it's time to say farewell to the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota. Your guides will drop you off at the Hotel Alex Johnson at approximately 12:00 pm.

Under Canvas Mt. Rushmore

Keystone, SD

Explorer Accommodation | On Trek Travel's South Dakota bike tour and glamping vacation, you'll stay at Under Canvas award winning camp located high in the Black Hills with views of Mt. Rushmore. Your tent is built on wooden platform and comes complete with a cozy King size bed, luxurious linens and a full bathroom. Stargazer tents include a clear panel above the bed for viewing the stars. Suite tents do not have a stargazer panel, but are a bit larger and also include a Queen sofa bed. A cot can be added to either tent. Under Canvas is committed to connecting you with nature and making your stay comfortable, while also limiting the camp's environmental impact. To conserve water, there are no bathtubs, but pull chain showers offer hot water for bathing. They use solar power as much as possible including to illuminate the forest paths that connect the tents. Tents do not have electricity. Instead, they have battery powered lanterns with USB ports for charging phones and wood stoves to keep your tent warm at night. Never fear, the extremely helpful staff at Under Canvas will teach you how to start a fire when you check in. And, there are communal bathrooms on property with electricity if needed for a hair dryer or the like. Tents do not have potable water, but there is water available at the lobby tent and various locations throughout the camp. Breakfast is served a short stroll away at the lobby tent. We suggest adding a water bottle, external charger and your slippers to your packing list and planning to unplug for a few days as there is no wifi at any Under Canvas camp. We hope you enjoy this unique glamping experience!
