Venture into remote, untamed landscapes on gravel roads through Wyoming and Montana's Rocky Mountains, crossing Beartooth Pass.

You're about to enter American frontier country, vast and largely untouched, the kind of landscape early travelers crossed by necessity, and few people ever get to cross simply for its sheer beauty and scale, let alone by bike. This is a cross-border adventure through the open spaces of northern Wyoming, where sagebrush hills give way to the jagged Absaroka Range on the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, ground the Nez Perce once moved through. From there, the road climbs into the barren, windswept tundra of Beartooth Pass, one of the highest paved roads in the country. Past canyons and creeks, every mile earns the next. Once in Montana, Red Lodge offers a moment to catch your breath then gravel and dirt roads carry you through the wide-open ranch country toward Livingston, a town still proud of its railroad and frontier roots, before rolling into Bozeman. Out here, the distance between places is part of the story, and with every pedal stroke, you'll come to understand why Montana proudly carries the name Big Sky Country.

Trip Wows
  • Ride a mix of roads from the sagebrush basins of Wyoming to the mountain spine of Montana, tackling three ranges in the northern Rockies

  • Climb Beartooth Pass, crossing high-alpine tundra and a ribbon of road that rises above the tree line

  • Follow the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, tracing canyon walls and switchback curves through the Absaroka Range

  • Step into Livingston's railroad-era streets, still shaped by generations of artists drawn to the light and the river

  • End your ride at a 19th-century gristmill where a hidden tunnel leads to an underground cheese cave and a studio gallery of artisanal crafts

Pilot Peak in the Absaroka range

Three Faces of the Rocky Mountains

Traverse three mountain ranges in a single week, from the jagged remoteness of the Absaroka to the exposed heights of the Beartooth and, as Montana opens up, the rolling Gallatin.

Activity Information

Hotels
Cody, Wyoming
Best Western Premier Ivy Inn and Suites
Comfort

Warm light from a gas fireplace and a glass-walled elevator greet you in the lobby of this Cody hotel, a short walk from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. After a day on the Bighorn Basin’s dusty roads, the indoor pool offers a cool escape from the afternoon heat, and 8th Street Restaurant is on hand for a plate of hearty Western fare.

Cooke City, Montana
Alpine Motel
Comfort

Simply furnished and set right at the edge of the Beartooth Highway, this small Cooke City motel puts the peaks of this old mining outpost close enough to watch the light change on them from your window. The general store and the Miners Saloon are both a short walk off, and mountain air that turns cool once the sun goes down.

Red Lodge, Montana
Rock Creek Resort
Explorer

Rock Creek runs close enough to hear from every room at this longstanding Red Lodge resort, spread across acres of pine and meadow at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains. A creekside sauna and indoor pool sit tucked among the trees, and the resort’s own stretch of creek is yours to fish, with nothing but surrounding peaks for company.

Livingston , Montana
The Murray Hotel
Explorer

Opened in 1904 to greet railroad passengers stepping off across the street, this storied Livingston hotel still runs its original hand-cranked elevator past marble stairways and red oak doors. The rooftop patio looks out over Main Street and the surrounding peaks, in a hotel that’s been putting up Old West characters since the trains still ran.

Bozeman, Montana
The LARK
Explorer

A once-tired 1960s motor lodge on Main Street has been reborn as one of downtown Bozeman’s most characterful stays, its rooms hung with locally made art that doubles as a guide to the surrounding mountains and wildlife. Grab a scoop from the ice cream cart out front and settle onto the patio as evening cools, before exploring the shops and restaurants outside the door.

Additional Details

Know Before You Go!

We want you to be fully prepared for your cycling vacation of a lifetime. This involves making sure that you choose the appropriate trip for you and that every aspect of your experience is flawless. Each Trek Travel trip is unique to ensure maximum enjoyment every time.

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • Cell phone coverage: Cell service is very limited throughout this trip. Expect minimal service on all rides except Day 1 and Day 7. Your guides will be equipped with walkie-talkies and a satellite communication device to enable them to communicate and provide effective support even when cell service is lacking.
  • Hotels: Our first hotel is a Best Western in Cody—while we don’t typically stay in chain properties, this location gives the trip a reliable, central start. From there, you’ll experience a mix of resorts and boutique hotels, along with rustic lodges and a roadside motel in Cooke City. Every effort has been made to secure the best lodging available, but in the rural stretches of Big Sky Country, options are limited and may not meet the comfort expectations of every guest. Please refer to our Hotels section for more details on each property.
  • Dining: Most evenings, you will dine at the best restaurant available near the hotel—from simple, hearty dinners to decadent nouvelle cuisine. We also strive to provide an early, hearty breakfast, but options and quality varies from town to town. As such, your guides will supplement breakfast at certain hotels.
  • Shuttles: On this trip, you will pedal vast stretches of Wyoming and Montana; however, there will be a 45-minute shuttle at the end of Day 5 to cover the distance to Livingston.
  • Altitude: We recommend arriving a day or two early to acclimate to the altitude. Beginning in Cody at 5,000 feet (1,524m), the trip climbs as high as 10,947 feet (3,337m) at Beartooth Pass.
  • Packing and weather: The weather is notoriously unpredictable in the mountains, and you can experience all four seasons in a single day, so bringing layers is essential. Layering is the best way to regulate your body temperature, slipping items on and off as your activity level or the weather changes. Even in summer, lingering snowfields are common near the summit of Beartooth Pass, so pack accordingly. Key items to bring: long-fingered gloves, arm warmers, leg warmers, a vest, and a rain jacket for the summit and descent.
  • Nature breaks: Getting off the beaten path means there may be limited services on some gravel rides. There may not be traditional restrooms available on some routes, but there will be plenty of trees.
  • Route changes: Gravel roads are dynamic by nature. Road surfaces change throughout the year depending on maintenance (grading, adding new gravel) and weather, particularly rain. Our guides constantly monitor road conditions and may change the routes as needed to provide the best possible riding experience.
