Solvang was founded in 1911 by a small group of Danish immigrants who were looking for a place to establish a Danish colony in America. They chose the Santa Ynez Valley because the climate and landscape reminded them of Denmark. Those who settled in Solvang brought their traditional architecture with them, and many of the buildings in the town are designed in the Danish style. The most famous of these is the Danish windmill, which is located in the heart of Solvang. Read More

Our ride begins heading west, out of the Santa Ynez Valley and down the Santa Rosa Wine Road, passing through picturesque vineyards, rolling hills, and stunning ranch scenery. Roll up to the beach and enjoy a gourmet Trek Travel picnic, while taking in the ocean breeze and the spectacular, rugged coastline. Jalama Beach is teeming with wildlife and it's the perfect place to relax and soak in nature. From February to April and again in the fall, it's sometimes possible for us to see gray whales and dolphins from the beach as they migrate along the channel to their breeding or feeding grounds. After we have had our fill of great food and sunshine, it's a 30-minute shuttle back from the coast. If you're up for a challenge, be sure to ask your guides about the Jalama Beach Challenge, which includes a post-lunch climb back up to Highway 1. Tonight, we'll meet for dinner at our favorite restaurant in Solvang, which serves locally sourced and upscale American fare. We'll reflect on our accomplishments and exchange fun stories about this amazing trip with all our newfound friends. Read More

While Jalama is still a popular surf destination, the Jalama Beach Burger is what really draws folks in. It got the title of "World's Best Burger" from McDonald's very own CEO, Ray Kroc. Don and Kathleen Eittreim opened the Jalama Beach Store and Grill in 1978. The couple would have never guessed that their burgers' "secret sauce" would be used as inspiration for the infamous fast-food chain. Read More
