From Pitlochry, cycle at your own pace through Perthshire's pastoral valleys and alongside storied lochs into Cairngorms National Park.

From the banks of the River Tay, this self-guided cycling vacation invites you to discover Perthshire, the gateway to the Highlands. Take yourself right into the heart of Scotland, through pastoral valleys, tracing lochside lanes and quiet country roads that pass through historic villages, featuring an exploration of Cairngorms National Park that leads to the doors of Blair Castle. Each evening finds you back at a grand mansion set within ten acres of woodland on the edge of Pitlochry. This storied Victorian town along the River Tummel opens onto a world of possibilities, on the bike and off it, whether that means another loop through the valley, a wander along the riverbank, or a visit to the local whisky distillery, one of the oldest in Scotland. The freedom to shape each day is entirely your own and reflects the independent spirit of the country itself.

Your Day. You Decide.

Our self-guided vacations are designed to fit all types of travel styles. Whether you like to spend your time relaxing or on a non-stop adventure, you get to decide what your day looks like. Choose your mileage, itinerary, and experience level and leave the rest to us!

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • Self-sufficiency: While our Trek Travel hosts will be available to answer any questions you may have when you meet, self-guided bike tours require a level of self-sufficiency. It is important to make sure you are comfortable changing a flat tire, navigating new roads, and taking on whatever weather may come your way.
  • UK entry requirements: Travelers entering the United Kingdom now need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This digital permission, costing £16, allows multiple journeys and is valid for two years or until your passport expires. Approval typically takes about 3 days, so it’s best to apply early. Apply via the UK ETA app or online at www.gov.uk.
  • Riding on the left: In Scotland, cyclists follow traffic on the left side of the road. If this differs from what you’re used to, don’t worry—your guides will remind you along the way. Take extra care when riding, crossing intersections, and navigating roundabouts.
  • E-Bikes: E-bike speeds vary worldwide due to local regulations, which determine how fast you can ride with assistance. See the E-bike speed chart to see the maximum speeds allowed in each region.
  • Road conditions: Roads are typically in good shape with minimal traffic, but ride with extra care on wet surfaces.
  • Packing: Layering is the best way to regulate your body temperature. This tried-and-true strategy is all about slipping layers on and off as your activity level or the weather changes. Rain gear is a must.
  • Air conditioning: Pine Trees Hotel does not have air conditioning. Scotland’s cooler climate and commitment to sustainability mean that most hotels don’t offer it, except in larger city properties. During the occasional warm spell, simply opening your windows is usually enough to keep your room comfortable.

Before and After Your Trip

FAQs

Summer temperatures range from the 50s to 70s°F (13–24°C). The shoulder months on either end, early May and late September, tend to run cooler, often in the 40s to low 60s°F (4–17°C), with crisp mornings and evenings even when afternoons warm up. Scotland's weather changes quickly, and rain is possible at any time of year, so a light rain jacket and a few extra layers are always worth packing. View our Packing List
