Activity Level: Level 3
Terrain: Hilly
The unpaved surfaces on our Tuscany Gravel bike tour are rated as Intermediate. About 50% of the riding is on unpaved roads, primarily featuring smooth dirt with light to moderate gravel, including the well-known white gravel roads known as the strade bianche. Some sections are rougher, with chunky gravel, potholes, or ruts, but there's room to navigate around obstacles. The route covers Chianti and Crete Senesi in Tuscany, with rolling and steep hills. You'll start with 4-8 miles (6-12 km)of pavement, then enter low-traffic, rural gravel roads with no services.
This tour is best suited for Level 3 Riders familiar with gravel and hills. Level 2 Riders can opt for shorter routes with van shuttles, while Level 4 Riders will enjoy the added mileage, climbing and challenging gravel sections of the avid routes. For those familiar with gravel riding and eager to experience every mile, yet mindful of their physical limits, our electric-assist bike option offers a comfortable and enjoyable solution.
