Amsterdam to Bruges Bike Tour

From tulips and windmills in the Netherlands to beer and chocolate in Belgium

Welcome to Trek Travel's latest adventure cycling between the sophisticated city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and the charming town of Bruges in Belgium. Both are cycling capitals, built to be seen by bike; speckled with tulips, bisected by quiet canals lined with windmills, and bursting with spring flowers deep into the early summer season. You’ll be guided by medieval architecture and history as you navigate green pastures past the homes of Rembrandt and Vermeer and weave in and out of small villages wrapped in folklore. At the same time, a storied past has left a notable mark on the Low Countries, and you’ll experience it all, biking along the coast to see the Raversyde Atlantic Wall Museum and more. While the fascinating history of the region will have you enthralled, there will also be plenty of time to sample the greatest parts of contemporary cultural delights, too. Is there anything better than chocolate, cheese, beer, and bikes? Join us and find out! Book your trip with confidence »

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at Restaurant IJ-Kantine at 10 AM on the first day of the trip. You can reach the IJ-Kantine with a 10 minute taxi ride from the city center or with a free ferry service from Amsterdam's Central Station. This former factory on the shores of the river IJ (pronounced similarly to "eye") in North Amsterdam has been converted into one of the most unique restaurants in town. After a short round of introductions, your guides will discuss the rules of bike safety and specific cycling tips for riding in the Netherlands before familiarizing you with your Trek bicycle and ensuring a comfortable fit. Then it’s off on your first ride towards the seashore and along the canals to Edam, well-known for its rich tradition in cheesemaking. Stop here for a sample, but don’t sit too long, as we have several charming Dutch villages to spin through on our way to Beemster and Schermer, both historic UNESCO World Heritage sites. Both are known for the low-lying land that sits below sea level, known as polders, which are bounded by dikes on all sides. We’ll cap off today’s ride with lunch at a local restaurant followed by a shuttle to The Hague, our home for the next three nights, which just happens to also be the home of the Dutch royal family!

Wake up to a great day planned for you in the Netherlands! After a delightful breakfast with your new friends, you’ll take off to the coast and ride through a "Dune Park" and picturesque coastal towns to arrive to the flower bulb region. From here, you'll continue through fragrant, colorful fields of tulips and flowers with our eyes set on the biggest and most impressive flower garden of the Netherlands, Keukenhof. Take a stroll and breathe in the floral air, as this garden is a sheer delight for all your senses, and truly a one-of-a-kind destination! Choose to shuttle or ride back along the famous Dutch canals to The Hague through the university town of Leiden, the center of the flower bulb region. This town is at once charming, historic, and important, known for being the birthplace of Rembrandt, and for having more waterways and bridges than any other destination in the country besides Amsterdam. Dinner tonight will be together in The Hague's old town at a charming, locally-celebrated restaurant.

The canals, mills, and pumping stations of Kinderdijk are a testament to engineering that endures, keeping water under control for 700 years. Choose to ride around the windmills and then get up-close and personal with a visit to the museum mills for the backstory of these marvels. Then, it's off to Cheese Valley to taste the Gouda goods with our local friend and cheesemaker. Together we’ll learn the process of what it takes to make perfectly-aged, rich, delicious cheeses like Gouda. After the cheese tasting and lunch, it’s time to get back on your bike and head toward the cheese capital, the namesake town of Gouda. Stop here for a coffee then continue through rural areas and nature preserves to Delft, home of the Dutch Royal Family and Johannes Vermeer. This town is also known for amazing, hand-crafted pottery and an extremely vibrant town square. Stop and take in the sights before riding all the way back to our hotel. Dinner tonight is your choice in town, and your guides will be happy to provide you with their favorite recommendations!

Are you ready to cross international borders by bike today? After breakfast, a two-hour shuttle takes you to Breskens on the Dutch seaside. Begin your ride along the scenic sand dunes, then head inland towards the distinguished city of Bruges. En route, pause at the picturesque town of Sluis, a charming village where you'll enjoy some time to explore and have lunch. From Sluis, you'll soon cross the border into Belgium and continue along a canal all the way to Bruges. This capital city of West Flanders is known for its unique look and feel, with plenty of cobbled streets, canals, and pristinely maintained medieval architecture. Tonight, we’re headed to the oldest family-run brewery in the area, De Halve Maan, where you can taste the unique Brugse Zot beer, which will taste extra-refreshing once you've conquered the 220 steps on your brewery tour! This day is yours to decide how to spend it best: You can either pedal through the countryside to the coastal town of Oostende and the unique open-air museum of Raversyde or spend the day in town and explore all the delights Bruges has to offer. If you decide to visit the museum, you’ll get an up-close look at an unimaginable living piece of history, the Atlantic Wall. This imposing structure, built from 1942 to 1945, spans 5,000 kilometers along the North Sea and Atlantic coast. It's a remarkable testament to the German defensive line, featuring over sixty concrete bunkers, passageways, observation posts, and artillery positions. Lunch today is on your own and you can decide to spend it before or after the museum visit, or head back to Bruges and seek out lunch options there. We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your bike tour in the Netherlands, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). The Amsterdam airport is about five and a half miles (nine kilometers) from the town center.

You can take a train from Schiphol Airport directly into Amsterdam Central station. The train station is located below the terminal building. The train gets you to Amsterdam Central Station in approximately 15 minutes. Two of our recommended pre-trip hotels are in walking distance from the Central Station. We recommend that you buy the Amsterdam Travel Ticket that allows you to make unlimited use of the train and bus to and from Schiphol, and all trams, metros, and buses in the city centre for up to 24 hours.

To get more information about getting to town from the airport, check out the airport's web page at www.schiphol.nl/en/page/transportation-from-schiphol/ and to plan your journey with public transportation, you can use www.ns.nl/en.

You can reach the meeting point with a 10 minutes taxi ride from the city center (20 – 25 EUR) or with a FREE ferry service from Amsterdam’s Central station. Take the little ferry F4 or F5 (NDSM Verfveer) accross the IJ-River and it will drop you off right in front of IJ-Kantine. Enjoy a small snack here, while your guides will give you specific information about riding bikes in the Netherlands and do a bike fitting to ensure your comfort on your Trek Domane or your Trek Verve+ this week. You'll then be ready to ride right from IJ-Kantine, out of Amsterdam, along the canals, all the way to Edam. Please have your first day’s riding gear handy and separate from your other luggage to facilitate the bike fitting and ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Hotel Indigo The Hague - Palace Noordeinde (+31 70 209 9000) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. You may take a taxi to the first night’s hotel for approximately 80 euros. The trip takes around 30 minutes from the airport.

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: Amsterdam, Netherlands

What will charm you is the city's gezellig, that comfortable ambience that you usually find when sitting with friends. Apart from finding your cycling brethren here — in this city the bike is king — you'll find those cosy places where you can sit and chat with your travel partners, taking in the city that winds by outside your window. When you venture out, you'll have a hard time not running into one of the countless cultural and artistic troves curated here. The Netherlands' artistic nature is captured in the span between the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk. You will want to give this city a few days to visit and enjoy. In central Amsterdam, your destination is never far away, but also try renting a bike from the many on offer for an authentic local experience. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

after

After: Brussels, Belgium

Brussels has many charming and beautiful attractions, with deeply ornate buildings on the Grand-Place and the fish-and-crustacean overdose of St. Catherine’s Square. Stroll along and stop in for a drink at one of the many bars on Place St-Géry, or splurge on the trendy Rue Antoine Dansaert. Also consider extending your stay in Bruges, to see even more that this charming town has to offer, or visiting the cultural centers of Ghent and Antwerp, before making your way to Brussels. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel in Brussels:
