Legendary training grounds of Costa Brava

New-Button-68x26

Pro cyclists can live anywhere in the world. So why do so many of them choose Girona? Here's your chance to find out.

Join us, and pedal the same roads as George Hincapie, Christian Vande Velde, Taylor Phinney and practically every other pro as we gaze out on the crystal blue Mediterranean Sea and explore one charming Spanish village after the next. You'll test your legs on the steeps of the Pyrenees, ride along the shores of Costa Brava, and wind it all down in a very special hotel located in the center of Girona. When you're not riding, you can kick back with a glass of rioja or check out the cobbled, time-worn streets in the old city. This isn't just a training ground for your legs. It's hallowed ground for your soul.

We'll start together, and ride from our hotel to the tranquil Lake of Banyoles, where the Avid riders can split off for a special treat as we climb the Rocacorba, a secret training climb used by pros to test their fitness. Treat yourself to sweeping views of the majestic Pyrenees, under a banner of blue sky, as you ride this relatively short ascent (just shy of 14km) with teeth (an average grade of 6.5%). Then it's back to our hotel for a little R&R before dinner on your own. Your guides will happily provide their favorite recommendations.

Choose from our selection of self-guided rides
Approximately 35-45 miles with 1,000 - 2,500 feet of climbing

Description:

We've reached the middle of the week, and for many Ride Camp guests, that means a free day to travel, sightsee or just relax by the pool. Of course, you're also free to ride more, and if that's the case, don't hesitate to grab your Garmin and a route card to set off on a solo adventure. Girona is chock-full of hidden routes. For those who want to explore the town, feel free to take advantage of a walking tour, or visit one of the many cafes run by ex-pro cyclists. The Girona market is also a popular stop, where you can shop for local breads, produce, cheese and crafts. Dinner will be together as a group to share what you've seen and prepare for the second half of our adventure!

FAQs

Trip Changes

Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer each and every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

  • Rider Type | 4
  • Average Daily Mileage | 60
  • Terrain | Mountainous
  • Average Daily Elevation | 3,450 ft.

On all of our Ride Camps, Trek Travel strives to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to ride; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Girona Ride Camp is best suited for our Type 4 Riders. Type 4+ Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer. Type 3 Riders will enjoy fewer miles the short options offer. This trip provides riding on rolling to mountainous terrain. Girona is located between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava in northeastern Spain. Guests can expect a variation of mountainous climbs and descents to rolling coastal riding. See Itinerary for specific daily ride distance and elevation options.

In Girona, you can expect to experience temperatures in the 60s and 70s in the fall and 50s to 60s in the winter months. Girona is located between the Mediterranean Ocean off the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees Mountains. Be sure to bring plenty of layers for riding.

Ride Camps are a mix of guided and self-guided trips. The focus of our Ride Camps is to build your base miles for your cycling season. As a result our rides are focused on the physical dimension and not the site seeing. We also assume that guests are more self-sufficient than our 'all-inclusive' style regular trips. Each morning you'll begin your ride between 8-9 AM and return sometime between 2-5 PM depending on the length of the ride and your ability level. Depending on your riding level you may or may not not have a guide with you. A support vehicle will be on each day’s featured ride at scheduled stops, but you'll want to be sure you carry appropriate layers and food for your ride. Once you return to the hotel, the afternoon is yours to enjoy as you wish. Trek Travel staff will ensure that your bike is in excellent condition for the next day's ride. You are welcome to dine at your leisure and any non-riding activities that you'd like to take advantage of can be organized through the hotel concierge and are at your own expense.

Ride Camps are a mix of guided and self guided trip. You will have a minimum of 1 Trek Travel staff member that will be at the trip start, assign you your bike for the camp, and provide support on the featured group rides. When there is more than one staff member one will lead the first group of riders and the other will drive the support vehicle. The support vehicle will leap frog the group and make scheduled stops along the ride. We recommend that you are comfortable riding independently without guide support if you are not riding with the group.

This trip is designed to build your base miles for your cycling season, so we anticipate that all guests will have a good level of physical ability and be sufficiently prepared to comfortably ride a variety of challenging terrain. (Featured rides are in the trip Itinerary.) Guests are welcome to ride as much or as little as they like and must be prepared to support themselves if they are not able to do the entire featured ride or chose to do a different ride. Please select the ride options that best suit your physical ability.

You don't need to be a professional athlete to enjoy a Trek Travel Ride Camp, however due to the level of riding we do encourage each guest to come with a good level of physical fitness. This vacation is most appropriate for Rider Type 4. Please consult our Rider Types to find out what type of weekly rides you should be able to complete in order to enjoy this vacation. We always recommend that guests consult their physician before coming on a Ride Camp.

Non-riders are welcome at Ride Camp if they are staying in the same room with a riding guest. The riding guest will be required to pay the single supplement fee for a private room and a meal package ($350 for 7 day trips and $200 for 4 day trips) for the non-rider to dine with the group. Please contact a trip consultant for details and to book a non-riding companion.

In addition to being cycling Meccas, Ride Camp destinations are great for vacations. There are a number of non-riding activities to do in the area and you can often upgrade your experience at the hotel. Some of these activities have additional costs and can be arranged through the hotel's concierge. Here are some suggestions:

  • Experience Girona's rich history and vibrant culture
  • Explore La Bisbal d'Empordà, a nearby beautifully preserved medieval town known for its ceramics
  • Visit Salvador Dalí’s castle, a gift to his wife Gala
  • Tour a local vineyard and taste the famous "Catalan" wines
  • Discover ancient ruins
  • Swim in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean
  • Walk on the beach

We recommend booking your trip at least 60 days prior to departure. Trips do sell out or become otherwise unavailable, so booking early is the most reliable means of reserving spots. Based on availability, last-minute bookings can be accommodated up to one week prior to departure.

When a trip is booked, a guest confirmation letter is immediately sent out. One week prior to the trip start you will receive an email containing a trip start meeting location reminder and any last minute information that you will need to know before your trip. Once you arrive at your destination Trek Travel staff will brief you on the day-to-day plan for Ride Camp and provide you with a packet containing daily route guides and a detailed map allowing you to ride with complete confidence and independence.

The meeting point at the beginning and end of Ride Camp is at the trip hotel. You are responsible for organizing and paying for your own transportation to and from the trip hotel and the airport. Recommended shuttle services are listed in the Meeting and Departing information. In your trip one-week-out email, you'll receive information about the specific time and location of our trip start meeting.

All Ride Camps that have a minimum of 1 person booked two weeks prior to the trip start date are guaranteed to run. If we are within the two-week time period and no one has booked on that departure date, the trip will be canceled. Trips will not be canceled due to low enrollment within 7 days of the trip start.

The average group size on a Trek Travel Ride Camp is 10, however we allow up to 30 guests per camp. If you wish to find out how many people are on your specific trip, please contact our Trip Consultant via email at sales@trektravel.com.

The price of your Trek Travel vacation includes the choice of the best bikes on the market. On your Ride Camp the use of a Trek Domane SL 7 is included in the price of your trip. Learn more about the Domane.

You are more than welcome to bring your own bike, but please keep in mind Trek Travel cannot assume responsibility for the safety of or damage to your bike that may exceed what and how we maintain the safety and well-being of our own fleet of bikes. You are responsible for providing the maintenance to your bike and any spare parts that may be used during the trip. You are also responsible for assembling your bike upon arrival and disassembling it upon departure.

Please review our packing list page for more details.

We understand things happen in life and sometimes you have to cancel or change your bike tour. We want to make it as easy as possible to do so and below you will find our timeline. If you ever have a question, just give us a call, 866 464 8735. Read our cancellation policy.

We recommend booking your pre or post night stay directly with the hotel. You may choose to stay at the same hotel as the trip or a different hotel of your choice.

Please mention that you are with the Trek Travel group and request to stay in the same hotel room during Ride Camp if you would like to avoid changing rooms, although this cannot be guaranteed by the hotel. Please provide us with your confirmation number and we will do our best to keep your room throughout the trip. The hotel may also extend a Trek Travel rate upon request, depending on availability.

Before: Barcelona, Spain

The Catalonian capital of Barcelona boasts a beautiful coastline, a great diversity of culture, leisure and shopping, creative, innovative gastronomy and an avant-garde spirit. Be sure to check out some of the fantastic architecture and art of Antonio Gaudí, such as Sagrada Familia or Parc Guell. The Gothic quarter is the heart of Barcelona’s old town, with narrow cobblestone streets on which Picasso and Miró lived long ago. Las Ramblas is a long tree-lined shoppers’ paradise that leads to the sea. Be sure not to miss the fascinating Boqueria market for a slice of local life. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

After: Girona, Spain

Girona has long enjoyed the reputation for being the richest town in Spain. Founded in the first century BC, it soon became the most important point on the Spanish Via Augusta. Enjoy the reflections of the colorful pastel row houses on the River Onyar before crossing the river and wandering the narrow cobblestone streets of the medieval Jewish quarter. Admire the cathedral from below and then enjoy a 15-minute walk atop the old town walls to get great views of the town. Search out Café Via Augusta in the old quarter, where professional cyclists training in Girona sometimes stop for coffee. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

Hotel Camiral at PGA Catalunya Resort

This 5-star luxury hotel is the toast of the town, even though it's 20 minutes from the hustle and bustle of the city. Enjoy total relaxation and lavish accommodation as your every need is attended to by a thoughtful, attentive staff and all nestled in breathtaking scenery.
