Palm Springs & Joshua Tree National Park

A Desert Oasis

New-Button-68x26

Join us as we ride and hike through Joshua Tree National Park, seek out one desert oasis after another, tour Palm Springs’ hidden architectural gems and sip cocktails like a lounge singer in style.

Palm Springs is a one-of-kind mix of eye-candy landscapes including snow-capped mountains, spiky cacti, bright succulents, palm trees, and mid-century modern architecture. It’s a retro town born and raised by Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack that feels vibrant and alive in its current style, which is its very own. If there's one word we would use to describe the new Palm Springs it's "glam," with a unique mix of both high style and access to world-class natural resources all in one place. On our trip you will visit a river in the desert at the Whitewater Preserve, take a hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, spend two full days in the stunning beauty of Joshua Tree National Park and marvel at towering palms and wildlife at a number of palm oases, all out of one perfectly situated retreat-like hotel. There's truly no place like Palm Springs, so we invite you to take advantage of the warming desert sunshine on the bike as you discover this charming mid-winter getaway.

Private Guided Architecture Tour and Aerial Tramway

Description:

We have a quintessentially Palm Springs day in store. We'll start with a glorious morning ride past the natural wonder of the Coachella Valley Preserve - Thousand Palms Oasis, located among the mesas of the Indio Hills. This stunning concentration of palms and unique wildlife is fed by waters seeping from the San Andreas Fault. Take a few minutes to explore the preserve on foot before deciding whether or ride or shuttle back to the hotel. Then, it's lunch on your own in downtown Palm Springs before our bellwether event of the day, a 90-minute cycling tour of some of Palm Springs most beautiful and architecturally significant houses, conducted by the highly-rated architecture tour guide Trevor O'Donnell. We'll learn the background of homes like the Kaufmann Desert House, a 70-year old masterwork of design and construction and hear tales that bring the homes alive through their interesting history. Then, it's back to the hotel to prepare for an optional pre-dinner aerial tram up to Mount San Jacinto State Park—temperatures at the top of the tram can be up to 30 degrees cooler than the valley below so bring a jacket to take in the views! Dinner tonight is on your own, in the heart of the city.

Trip Changes

Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer each and every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

  • Rider Type | 2
  • Average Daily Mileage | 33
  • Terrain | Undulating
  • Average Daily Elevation | 1,730 ft.

On all of our vacations, Trek Travel strives to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Our Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park trip is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van. Those who wish to ride every mile but are concerned about their physical ability may want to try our electric bike option–you still get a workout but can climb alongside even the strongest rider. Type 3 Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer. The terrain ranges from flat to gently rolling, with some options for more climbing included in the Avid options on Days 1 and 4. See Itinerary for specific daily ride distance and elevation options.

You can expect generally sunny weather with mid-day temperatures averaging 75 degrees and cooling off at night into the high 40s in Palm Springs. Daytime temperatures are 30-40 degrees cooler at the top of the aerial tramway and 10-15 degrees cooler on the north side of Joshua Tree National Park, where you will spend Day 4.

On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. See Included In The Trip Price for more information. Some non-riding options on this trip are:

  • Aerial Tramway
  • Hike through numerous preserves, Mount San Jacinto State Park or Joshua Tree National Park
  • Architecture Tour
  • Botanical Gardens
  • Spa visit
