Alentejo Wine Region

A visit to the Alentejo region is like stepping into the past, to a time before cities, where ages old quiet rolling countrysides of wheat, olive trees, vineyards and cork tree groves are the rule.

Here the food, like the pace, is anything but fast, with tasty delicacies like aged cheeses, and ham produced from the black footed pigs that devour the acorns falling from the region’s oak trees. It's also the seat of the world's cork production, still harvested by hand at the same slow pace that's been followed for generations. We'll follow house rules and unwind at one luxurious hotel for the course of our vacation, guaranteed to put you where you want to be without a lot of work, and with a lot of relaxation. From delectable meals to Roman temples in towns like Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where city walls and ruins of Roman baths still remain, this is where time stands still, and the hustle, bustle and busyness of everyday life are long forgotten.

FAQs

Trip Changes

Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer each and every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

  • Rider Type | 2
  • Average Daily Mileage | 36
  • Terrain | Undulating
  • Average Daily Elevation | 2,150 ft.

On all of our vacations, Trek Travel strives to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Portugal is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van. Type 3 Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer. The Alentejo region is a vast area of gently rolling hills. See day by day itinerary for specific daily ride distance and elevation options.

On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. See Included In The Trip Price for more information. Some non-riding options on this trip are:

  • Wine tasting
  • Winery tour
  • Marble tour
  • Hot Air Ballooning
  • Historical and cultural walking tours
  • Spa

The south central region of Alentejo sees favorable temperatures year round, but spring is the best time to visit with average mid-70 degree highs and lows of 50 -55 degrees. With only an average of 6 -8 days of rain, there is always a chance for a spring shower, so rain gear is recommended.

For an additional fee you may request to upgrade to the Trek Emonda SLR with Shimano Di2 Electronic shifting or Bontrager Aeolus carbon wheels for the ultimate riding experience. Contact our trip consultants for more details.

If you’re going we’re going on almost all our trips. Trips with 1 guest booked are guaranteed to run. Select trips like Cross Country, Race and Special Edition trips require a minimum number of guests to run and are not guaranteed until that number is reached. Contact your Trip Consultant for more details.

In the event that a departure has low enrollment, we will notify guests at 60-90 days before departure to give the option to select a different date with more guests booked. Please do not reserve airfare before confirming your Trek Travel trip.

When a trip is booked, a guest confirmation letter is immediately sent out. One week prior to the trip start you will receive an email containing a trip start meeting location reminder and any last minute information that you will need to know before your trip. Once you arrive at your destination Trek Travel staff will brief you on the day-to-day plan for the trip and provide you with daily route guides and a detailed map allowing you to ride with complete confidence and independence.

We understand things happen in life and sometimes you have to cancel or change your bike tour. We want to make it as easy as possible to do so and below you will find our timeline. If you ever have a question, just give us a call, 866 464 8735. Read our cancellation policy.

Meeting & Departing

How to get there

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone (GMT -6) and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Lisbon Portola Airport (LIS). Public transportation is inexpensive and easy to use from the airport. You can take the Metro with a one-way ticket for 1.90€ or the daily pass (which allows you to use the metro, bus, trams and trains) for 6€. More info can be found here: http://metro.transporteslisboa.pt/eng/ Alternatively, taxis are plentiful and cost approximately 15 to 25 Euros to Lisbon center.

After a light lunch of local delights on the patio of the hotel, your guides will fit and familiarize you with your bike for the week and speak to the specifics of cycling in the area before taking to the roads of Alentejo.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Alentejo Marmoris Hotel and Spa (+351 268 887 010), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details.
