Portugal Bike Tour

Alentejo Wine Region

A visit to the Alentejo region is like stepping into the past, to a time before cities, where ages-old quiet rolling countrysides of wheat, olive trees, vineyards, and cork tree groves are the rule. Here the food, like the pace, is anything but fast, with tasty delicacies like aged cheeses, and ham produced from the black footed pigs that devour the acorns falling from the region’s oak trees. It's also the seat of the world's cork production, still harvested by hand at the same slow pace that's been followed for generations. We'll follow house rules and unwind at one luxurious hotel for the course of our vacation, guaranteed to put you where you want to be without a lot of work, and with a lot of relaxation. From delectable meals to Roman temples in towns like Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where city walls and ruins of Roman baths still remain, this is where time stands still, and the hustle, bustle and busyness of everyday life are long forgotten. Welcome to Portugal! You'll arrive at your luxurious retreat deep in the Alentejo Region after a two-hour shuttle ride. Settle in and make yourself at home and enjoy a light lunch at the hotel terrace highlighting the local specialties: soft, light sheep cheeses (from sheep we pass on our rides) and black ham are your introduction to the Alentejo palate. Your guides will fit and familiarize you with your bike and riding for the week. Then, it's off on our first adventure through vineyard-lined roads to Terena, a lovely small village, located in an area of quietness, close to the river and nearby the border with Spain. During the Middle Age, this village had an important defensive role, as its Castle still proves, integrating the Guadiana river defensive line. The streets of Terena are characterized by its lovely typical Alentejo’s architecture, with small colorful houses. Explore the village and enjoy picturesque views before heading back to Vila Vicoca. This evening we'll gather for a welcome drink of local Alentejo wines before dinner at our guide's favourite local restaurant, which freshens classic Portuguese dishes to contemporary tastes with locally sourced ingredients.

Today's Ride:

Vila Vicosa to Castelo de Terena loop
Approximately 28 miles with 1,700 feet of climbing

Alentejo Marmoris Hotel and Spa

Included Meals:

Lunch | Social Hour | Dinner

This morning, sunlight streams in the windows and a bountiful breakfast of fresh fruits and sweet coffee awaits. This morning we'll take our bikes and ride through gently rolling countryside noted for producing high quality wines toward Evora, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll pass by its impressive 16th century aqueduct, then take an expert-led walking tour with a local guide to the Temple of Diana, an ancient Roman temple dating back to the first century and the town’s most famous landmark. We will finish our tour at the bone chapel, perhaps one of the most memorable monuments of Evora, where the walls are lined with bones of the long-deceased, exhumed from the city's graves as the city expanded to allow further burials. Enjoy lunch on your own and take your time to explore a maze of perfectly maintained cobbled streets with traditionally painted houses. A variety of delightful shops provide a great opportunity to buy presents and souvenirs. We will shuttle back to the hotel where you can take a bit of time for a drink poolside or relax before exploring town on your own for dinner.

Today's Ride:

Vila Vicosa to Evora
Approximately 38 miles with 2,000 feet of climbing

Today, quiet country roads lead us east to the border town of Elvas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tour one of the greatest fortified frontier towns in Europe, with military fortifications that are among the most sophisticated and best preserved on the continent. Be sure to peek into the local ceramics shop in search of the roncas, traditional musical instruments from the town of Elvas. Then marvel at the towering Amoreira Aqueduct, 4.5 miles in length and built over a century's time. With a total of 843 arches, rising to over 100 ft, it still brings water to the town. Enjoy lunch on your own in Elvas, we have a few places where you can find the fresh and tangy refreshment of Portuguese gazpacho, a perfect mid-ride meal to keep you fresh and nourished for the rest of your ride to back to Vila Vicosa. Tonight, we will step into a former palace built by King Joao V as a present to the lady of the court, D. Maria, with whom he fell madly in love. A walk through Dona Maria’s lavish gardens and rooms rich in 18th century tile will lead us to the copper pot filled kitchen. Here, you will, firsthand, help to create tonight’s dinner. Upon completing your master piece, enjoy the estate’s distinct and popular wines while savoring the flavors of your creation.

Today's Ride:

We'll head south today, following the Spanish border all the way to the picture-perfect village of Monsaraz with its whitewashed walls and cobbled streets. You'll quickly fall in love and surely have something to bring home with its many craft and souvenir shops. Monsaraz is located near one of the largest pottery producing towns in Portugal, so be sure to peruse the local handpainted dishes before you head to the town's main attraction, its castle, where you'll be rewarded again with some of the most spectacular views of the town and across the Alentejo. Your guides will take you to the locals' favorite Taverna "Os Templarios". Enjoy a glass of wine with and fresh Portuguese cuisine on the restaurant terrace with the views on the town. We will shuttle back to the hotel. The afternoon is yours to spend relaxing with a luxurious spa treatment at the Stone Spa or reading your book by the pool. Tonight dinner is on your leisure at the restaurant of your choice the town.

Today we will peer out over the Alentejo plains of twisted cork trees, fields of wheat and olive trees to a local estate whose land has been dedicated to cork oak forestry for five generations. Here we will join our local guide, José, who is part of a family that has been involved for generations in the art of cork extraction and who has also studied archaeology. While hiking into the surrounding hills and forest, he will share with us all that he knows about this important and fascinating renewable resource that historically has been a huge part of the economy in this region. Tonight we shuttle to the town of Estremoz to sample some of Alentejo cuisine at Mercearia Gadanha. Start with an iron pan of delectable shrimp gratin with light cheese from local producers, followed by a fresh tuna seared and stacked on a bed of fresh greens highlighted by a mustard sauce for extra pizzazz. Or maybe you're after a fresh rack of lamb, accompanied by migas, which are bread crumbs in their most royal posture, accompanied by asparagus into a light cake. If you haven’t had your fill, complete your meal with a fierce espresso and chocolate fondue. It's a perfect way to enjoy a last evening with your new comrades.

Packing and Weather

The south central region of Alentejo sees favorable temperatures year round, but spring is the best time to visit with average mid-70 degree highs and lows of 50 -55 degrees. With only an average of 6 -8 days of rain, there is always a chance for a spring shower, so rain gear is recommended. Packing List

Before and After Your Trip

Before & After: Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, known as the city of 7 hills, is the capital city of Portugal overflowing with great café culture, music, art, and gratuitous history. You'll be enchanted by the narrow, cobbled streets and white washed walls, ochre roofs and colorful splashes of ceramic tiles. Be sure to walk the streets of some of the many storied neighborhoods and certainly don't pass up a pastéis de nata, Portugal's mouthwatering custard tart.
