Portugal Bike Tour

Alentejo Wine Region

A visit to the Alentejo region is like stepping into the past, to a time before cities, where ages-old quiet rolling countrysides of wheat, olive trees, vineyards, and cork tree groves are the rule. Here the food, like the pace, is anything but fast, with tasty delicacies like aged cheeses, and ham produced from the black footed pigs that devour the acorns falling from the region’s oak trees. It's also the seat of the world's cork production, still harvested by hand at the same slow pace that's been followed for generations. We'll follow house rules and unwind at one luxurious hotel for the course of our vacation, guaranteed to put you where you want to be without a lot of work, and with a lot of relaxation. From delectable meals to Roman temples in towns like Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where city walls and ruins of Roman baths still remain, this is where time stands still, and the hustle, bustle and busyness of everyday life are long forgotten. Welcome to Portugal! You'll arrive at your luxurious retreat deep in the Alentejo Region after a two-hour shuttle ride. Settle in and make yourself at home and enjoy a light lunch at the hotel terrace highlighting the local specialties; soft, light sheep cheeses and black ham are your introduction to the Alentejo palate. Your guides will fit and familiarize you with your Trek bike and tell you some riding tips for the week. Then, it's off on your first adventure through vineyard-lined roads to Terena, a lovely village, located in an area of rural quietness, strategically close to the river Lucefécit that leads to the border with Spain. During the Middle Ages, this village had an important defensive role, as its castle still proves, integrating the Guadiana river defensive line. The streets of Terena are characterized by its lovely typical Alentejo’s architecture, with small white houses with colorful trim. Explore the village and enjoy picturesque views before heading back to Vila Vicosa. This evening we'll gather for a welcome drink of rich Alentejo wines before dinner at our guide's favourite restaurant in town, which freshens classic Portuguese dishes to contemporary tastes with locally sourced ingredients.

Today's Ride:

Included Meals:

Today you'll peer out over the Alentejo plains of twisted cork trees, fields of wheat, and olive trees as you ride to a rural estate whose land has been dedicated to cork oak forestry for five generations. Following a delicious lunch with all your favourite Portuguese flavors, you'll join our local guide, Joana, who will fill you in on all the details of cork extraction. Raised in the area, she has an insider's perspective and passion for the land and the people. While cruising in a jeep into the surrounding hills and forest, she will share with us all that she knows about this important and fascinating renewable resource that historically has been a huge part of the economy in this region. After cork forest visit, we'll shuttle back to Vila Vicosa to enjoy some down time in the afternoon. This evening we'll gather for a dinner at the hotel's restaurant Primavera, offering traditional Alentejo cuisine and an outdoor dining experience surrounded by colourful decor, beautiful hand laid marble flooring and plants to mark the season of spring.

Sunlight streams in the windows and a bountiful breakfast of fresh fruits and sweet coffee awaits. This morning you'll take your bike and ride through gently rolling countryside noted for producing high quality wines. You'll stop to visit a pottery shop in Redondo, where they make traditional wheel-thrown and hand-painted wares. You'll then continue toward Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Catch sight of its impressive 16th century aqueduct as you take an expert-led walking tour with our local guide to an ancient Roman temple dating back to the first century and the town’s most famous landmark, sometimes referred to as the Temple of Diana. After seeing many highlights in this historically important town, you'll finish the tour at the bone chapel, perhaps one of the most memorable monuments of Evora. Here the walls are artistically lined with bones of the long-deceased, exhumed from the city's graves as the city expanded to allow further burials. Enjoy lunch on your own and take your time to explore a maze of perfectly maintained cobbled streets and narrow houses. A variety of delightful shops provide a great opportunity to buy presents and souvenirs. The rest of the afternoon is yours to spend relaxing with a luxurious spa treatment at the hotel's well-appointed Stone Spa or reading your book by the pool. This evening you can explore the town and enjoy dinner of your choice.

Breakfast

Following breakfast and your daily route talk from your guides, you'll head south today, and ride what is arguably the most picturesque ride of the week. You'll pass through small towns, olive groves, and cross rivers to follow the Spanish border, ending with a climb to the picture-perfect village of Monsaraz. With its whitewashed walls and cobbled streets, you'll quickly fall in love with this charming perched village and surely have something to bring home from one of its many artisanal shops. Monsaraz is located near one of the largest pottery producing towns in Portugal, so be sure to peruse the shops before you head to the town's main attraction, its castle, where you'll be rewarded with some of the most spectacular views of the town and across the Alentejo. Your guides will take you to the locals' favorite Taverna "Os Templarios". Enjoy a glass of wine with fresh Portuguese cuisine with a terrace that views across the river Guadiana and directly onto Spain. After a wonderful lunch together, we'll shuttle back to the hotel. Tonight we'll all head to the town of Estremoz to sample some of Alentejo cuisine at the celebrated restaurant, Mercearia Gadanha. Well-known for her skills in the kitchen, the chef, Michele, has created a cosy space in which you will enjoy her delicious plates that have a traditional base but with a contemporary twist. We will savor several courses of the most delicious and well-prepared food you can imagine and accompany it with some of the beautiful wines that the region around Estremoz is becoming well known for. If you haven’t had your fill, complete your meal with a fierce espresso and a rich slice of cake, perhaps accompanied with some Port. It is a highlight of the week and a perfect way to enjoy the evening with your new friends.

Explore one of the greatest fortified frontier towns in Europe, with military fortifications that are among the most sophisticated and best preserved on the continent. Be sure to peek into the town's ceramic shop in search of the roncas, traditional musical instruments from the town of Elvas. Then marvel at the towering Amoreira Aqueduct, almost four and a half miles in length and built over a century's time. With a total of 843 arches, rising to over 100 feet, it still brings water to the town. Enjoy lunch on your own in Elvas, with some recommendations from your guides where you can find the fresh and tangy refreshment of Portuguese gazpacho, a perfect mid-ride meal to keep you fresh and nourished for the rest of your ride (or shuttle) to back to Vila Vicosa. Tonight, we will step into a former palace built by King Joao V as a present to the lady of the court, Dona Maria, with whom he fell madly in love. A walk through Dona Maria’s lavish gardens and rooms rich in 18th century tile will lead us to the former palace and its dining room where you enjoy the estate’s distinct and popular wines while savoring the carefully prepared, and perfectly paired, meal.

Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

The south central region of Alentejo sees favorable temperatures year round, but spring and fall are the best time to visit with average 70-80 degree highs (21-26 degrees Celsius) and lows of 50-55 degrees (10-12 degrees Celsius). Mornings and evenings in fall can be cooler so make sure to pack layers. Rain is infrequent but there is always a chance for a shower so don’t forget your rain gear to assure you comfort while riding. Packing List
