For today's ride, we'll pedal towards the Pacific Ocean and perhaps even take a dip! Our ride begins heading west, traveling out of the Santa Ynez Valley and down the Santa Rosa Wine Road through vineyards, rolling hills, and amazing ranch scenery. Roll up to the beach and enjoy a gourmet Trek Travel picnic, while taking in the ocean breeze and the spectacular, rugged coastline. Wildlife is abundant around Jalama Beach which makes it the ideal place to sit back and enjoy nature. During the months of February through April and again in September to November you can also sometimes catch glimpses of the grey whale migration from the beach and see these majestic gentle giants along with dolphins migrate along the channel to their breeding or feeding grounds. After we have had our fill of basking in the sunshine, it's a 30-minute shuttle back from the coast. Be sure to ask your guides about the Jalama Beach challenge if you are interested in some more mileage which entails a proper post-lunch climb back up to Highway 1. Tonight, we'll meet for dinner at our favorite restaurant in Solvang that serves locally sourced and upscale American fare, as we reflect on our accomplishments and exchange contact information with all our newfound friends. AVERAGE DAILY ELEVATION:
528 meters / 1,734 feet
TOTAL ELEVATION:

TERRAIN: HILLY
The terrain is consistently rolling with quiet, narrow, and winding roads. The road surface quality in the Solvang area can be poor at times and may include potholes or roughly-patched surfaces. For those seeking more challenging rides, the hills to the east or north of the valley are sure to please even the most avid cyclist. Our California Discover trip is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills. Those who wish to ride every mile but are concerned about their physical ability may want to try our electric bike option–you still get a workout but can climb alongside even the strongest rider.
NON-RIDING ACTIVITIES:
On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding suggestions for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these suggestions may need to be scheduled before your trip. Expenses and related transportation to these activities are not included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on the Solvang bike trip are:
  • Wine tastings
  • Boutique shopping
  • Hiking opportunities
  • Explore local historic monuments and museums
  • Horseback riding
  • Golf
  • Various outdoor activities including mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing and more
  • Spa Services

See itinerary for specific daily ride distances and elevation options. On all of our vacations, Trek Travel seeks to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Though our routes are well-researched to provide the best possible riding experience, riders should be prepared for road surfaces of varying quality which, at times, can be poor. To improve comfort and performance, we have outfitted our Domane bikes in Solvang with a wider, 32cm Bontrager AW3 Hard Case lite tire to better accommodate the road surfaces. Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.
