Welcome to the heart of Texas Hill Country! This sunny region is ripe for discovery, including great food, wine, and most importantly, great riding. You'll meet your Trek Travel guides at the Fredericksburg Inn & Suites and take a quick walk to our favorite cafe to enjoy lunch together. Following a bike fit from your guides, you'll head out into the rolling terrain of the Texas Hill Country. Relish the countless vistas, vinyards, and solitude the area's blissfully paved roads have to offer. We'll ride to the town of Comfort, a historically German town founded in 1854. It has a well-preserved town center, with many structures built in the 19th century still standing today and it's the perfect place for a stroll before you take a 30-minute shuttle back to town. Tonight, we'll dine as a group at one of Fredericksburg's friendliest eateries and discuss the excitement ahead.

After breakfast, you'll head out on quiet ribbons of roads to the largest pink granite dome in the United States — Enchanted Rock rises 425 feet above the surrounding terrain and is part of what is known as the Llano Uplift. It is enchanted because the Comanche Indians said they heard the rock moaning and thought it to be a spirit/god. What is really happening is the varying temperature differences between the day and night will cause the rock to expand and contract which in turn, makes some noises. While we marvel at the geologic features around us and enjoy the cool breeze under the shady oaks, we'll top off the day with an abundant Trek Travel picnic in true Texan style, where everything is bigger! After lunch, you can choose to challenge yourself if you'd like to tackle all of today's mileage or take it easy on the shorter option. Enjoy dinner in Fredericksburg at a restaurant of your choice. There are many excellent options in town and your guides will be happy to steer you in the right direction.

The Old Tunnel State Park presents a stunning show for nature lovers, history buffs, and sightseers alike. You'll continue through more picturesque farmland and ranches before pedaling back in time to the town of Luckenbach, TX. This tiny hill country hamlet where “Everybody’s Somebody” was established as a Trading Post in 1849 making it one of the oldest settlements in Gillespie County. The Post Office/ General Store/ Beer Joint was first opened in 1886 by August Engel, an itinerant preacher from Germany, whose daughter Minna chose the name Luckenbach in honor of her fiancé, Albert Luckenbach. TERRAIN: HILLY
The road surface quality in Fredericksburg is predominantly comprised of chip seal surfaces and has numerous cattle guards. The terrain is consistently rolling, with quiet, narrow roads. Many climbs are relatively short and average around 6% so the climbing is accumulated throughout the ride. Texas Discover is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills. Those who wish to ride every mile but are concerned about their physical ability may want to try our electric bike option–you still get a workout but can climb alongside even the strongest rider. Type 3 Riders will really enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer.
NON-RIDING ACTIVITIES:
On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding suggestions for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these suggestions may need to be scheduled before your trip. Expenses and related transportation to these activities are not included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on the Texas Hill Country bike trip are:
  • Wine tasting
  • Boutique shopping
  • Live music
  • Explore local historic monuments and museums
  • Horseback riding
  • Golf
  • Spa Services

See itinerary for specific daily ride distances and elevation options. On all of our vacations, Trek Travel seeks to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Though our routes are well researched to provide the best possible riding experience, riders should be prepared for short sections of busy roads in order to get to the quiet country roads. Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. The routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

The Fredericksburg area enjoys generally warm, dry weather which makes these rides particularly enjoyable. The spring and fall can see the highs range from the high 60s to low 80s Fahrenheit (20-27C), while the lows are generally between 40 and 50 degrees (4-10C). We always recommend bringing along riding layers and even a bit of rain gear so you can keep riding comfortably throughout the day. Packing List
