Ever Heard of Bike Tours? Here are 7 Interesting Ways To Try It Out – nxtmodern.com

How does 3,750 miles of mesmerizing highlights throughout the U.S. over 45 days sound? The trip, which is provided by the same company that makes the well-praised Trek bicycles, Trek Travel, starts in Portland, Oregon and ends in Portland, Maine. Beaches, shopping, and a seemingly endless amount of historical site visits make this an unforgettable trip!

Before you complete your booking, Trek Travel will interview you to ensure you’re prepared for such a strenuous journey. The skill level is varied but pretty intense. New Luxury Resort From Blackberry Farm Combines Outdoor Adventure, Amazing Food, Fantastic Cycling – Forbes.com

Blackberry Mountain just announced a new partnership with Trek Travel, one of the world’s leading operators of active guided trips, with a focus on cycling and multi-sport. I’ve written about Trek Travel here at Forbes before, because in addition to the standard weeklong bike trips in places like Tuscany, they offer some really unique opportunities including hardcore immersion training camps and all-women trips. The award-winning company made the 2016 Travel + Leisure Magazine World’s Best Tour Operator list, and it stands out to me because it is run by a woman, Tania Burke, and outdoes the other top tier cycling companies in terms of its very high-quality hardware, thanks to a strong relationship with one-time parent Trek Bicycles (they are now separate companies, though both are based in Madison, WI).

The standard issue bikes are considerably better than industry norms: for road riding it’s the new generation full carbon 2019 Domane SL 7 Disc, featuring Shimano Di2 electronic shifting and disc brakes, and for mountain, the excellent dual suspension Fuel EX 8 27.5 inch model. Every guest also gets another first-rate hardware perk, a Garmin Edge 1030 GPS bike computer (I use an earlier version at home) preloaded with each day’s route, so there is no looking at maps and no getting lost. For safety, all bikes have front and rear blinking lights.

Top 5: Etiquette to Know When Traveling to Japan

Japan is a country steeped in tradition that has survived centuries and still guides the everyday life if its people. So as a visitor what are some important things to know? We talked to our Travel Advisor Program Manager who visited this stunning country, and got her top 5 pieces of etiquette to keep in mind when traveling to Japan.

1. Remove your shoes upon entry to a home

It also considered good manners to turn your shoes to point towards the door once they’ve been taken off.

2. Escalators

When riding an escalator in Tokyo, stay on the left side so others can pass on the right. However, when riding an escalator in the Kansai region, stay on the right side so others can pass on the left.

3. Don’t walk and eat

It is not polite to eat or drink on the go. You will see locals standing by vending machines to finish their beverages, or standing outside convenience stores eating their food before walking.

4. Chopsticks

Do not leave your chopsticks sticking up in a bowl of rice—this is reminiscent of a funeral rite—instead, lay them flat over the top of the bowl if necessary.

5. When paying at the register…

Do not pass your money directly to a cashier—instead, place your money in the tray provided on the counter.

6 Ways to Stay Comfy on a Long Flight

Long, trans-Atlantic or Pacific flights can be a beast to get through. But with a little preparation, your journey can be one that’s more daydream than nightmare.

1. Bring a neck pillow and eye mask

Nothing is worse than your head flopping around while you’re trying to catch some precious zzz’s. So while it may look goofy, a neck pillow will be your best friend. Also, if you are flying during daylight, an eyemask is critical to get a jumpstart on beating jetlag.

2. Escape from the noise

For long flights, noise-canceling headphones will be what gets you through. Pop those suckers on and you’ll be able to enjoy a ride without the disturbances of the plane engines and all other noise that comes with a packed flight.

3. Comfort above fashion

Keep it loose and comfortable and remember to layer for when it gets chilly. Loose-fitting shirts, comfortable pants with a little stretch, flats or tennis shoes, and a light jacket or sweater should be your uniform for the day. Also, make sure to pack an extra outfit in your carry-on in case your checked luggage doesn’t make it when you do.

4. Juice up your devices and plan ahead

Make sure to charge your phone, computer, tablets or whatever electronics you’re bringing aboard because the last thing you want is for your Kindle to run out of battery halfway through your 12-hour flight, or to have a dead phone upon landing.

5. Stay healthy & pack extra snacks

Sitting around at altitude for most of a day isn’t the best for your body. Fight off dehydration and deep-vein thrombosis by regularly drinking water, stretching, and walking around the cabin. And make sure to pack extra snacks like granola or a couple protein bars, as airline food isn’t often plentiful and you may get hungry in between scheduled in-flight meals..

6. Be polite to the crew

Make an active effort to be nice to those looking out for you in the air. You’re all up there together for quite a long time, and you never know, you might make a new friend or two.

Hotel Monaci delle Terre Nere: A Sicilian dream

Hotel Monaci delle Terre Nere is more than just a boutique hotel. When Trip Designers Penny and Ilona arrived, they knew immediately it was a special place.

Words by our Trip Designer, Ilona

We were welcomed in true Italian style. The manager of the property, Nino, was all smiles as he took us to the center of the estate—a Baroque villa more than 200 years old, transformed into a stunningly modern and intimate space. A large bar was cozied right up on the side of an antique palmento wine press, the two, though from times apart, complimented each other perfectly.

Here, we listened to Nino as he told us the story of the owner, Guido, a qualified sommelier. He and his partner Ada had a clear vision and put their hearts into realizing their dream. Their passion for nature, organic architecture and sustainable living is evident throughout the property. Fresh vegetables direct to your table, together with herbs from the garden, wine and olive oil from the hotel’s own orchards and vineyards, local Zafferana honey, homemade marmalade and home-baked bread for breakfast make it an experience you won’t soon forget. Nino, while talking, grabs a couple of mandarins from the tree and tosses them our way. Sweeter than candy, filled with Sicilian sun. We could not resist and took another.

“Let’s see the rooms!” We are zipping around in a golf cart, cruising past the vineyards and fruit orchards while getting a lesson in the passing flora and fauna. We stopped at a small house with a cute porch and walked in to find a room bathed in sunlight. The rays bounced off light wooden walls and through the large windows, you could see the vineyard spread out before you. Here, the rooms are all different, artistic yet with rustic elements like wooden beams or exposed black lava walls. The owners designed and curated all the interiors using their own collection of modern art and Italian designer furniture. Their unique taste and the attention to the detail put into every space makes this place so wholly original. Rooms are located throughout the entirety of the property, so staying there feels like having your own country-house—just with the best of modern amenities like your own sound system, air conditioning and wi-fi.

And did I mention the infinity pool? It overlooks the azure blue sea and bellies up to a stylish bar built into the stone-wall. We spent an afternoon here soaking up the sun and enjoying a glass of hand-selected Sicilian wines before our organic slow-food cooking class.
Time stops here. Warm hospitality and connection with nature makes this a unique place, which is close to impossible to leave.

What is pedal assist?

In case you haven’t heard, we’re big fans of the e-bike and how it helps riders of different abilities explore the world together. But what exactly is pedal assist?

Let’s start by dispelling one common myth we often hear, “Aren’t e-bikes like a moped?” In short, no.
Electric powered motorcycles use a throttle to engage the power. Trek e-bikes simply amplify your pedaling effort. They pedal like a regular bike, but the wind is always at your back and hills melt away.

Our e-bikes have four levels of assist to accommodate the level of boost you want. Trying to get the most out of your ride but want minimal help? Eco mode is the one for you. Middle of the pack? Bump it up to Tour or Sport mode. Trying to crush the biggest hill of the day no sweat? Turbo time.

Electric-assist bikes make it easy to stay with the group at any speed, and you can upgrade for free. E-bikes are first-come, first-serve on each tour date, so act now. It’s the easiest way to electrify your experience.
