After guide introductions, a welcome lunch and bike fitting, you will be all set for your first ride. The route begins with a short section of quiet road to warm up before heading into the heart of the Galloway Forest Park. The park covers an area of 300 square miles and offers endless gravel travels through mixed woodland and wild scenery. You'll follow The Raiders Road which offers a superb intro to the region's gravel; the road is so-named after the cattle rustlers who used this route for centuries. Pass the beautiful Otter Pools and a chance to refuel before climbing steadily, following an old railway line. From the high point, it’s a fast and sweeping descent back to base in Gatehouse of Fleet and the welcoming Murray Arms Hotel. This evening, we'll gather for a social hour where you guides will present an overview of the week ahead, followed by our first dinner together at the hotel, featuring the best of the region's local food and drink. The day starts with some steady miles on quiet tarmac before the climbing begins, elevated above the shores of Loch Grannoch. Look out for wild deer and wild goats as you follow The Queens Way, where the trail then heads north through remote countryside to reach Glen Trool. Glen Trool has a rich and ancient history including the Battle of Glen Trool during the first war of Scottish Independence. King Robert the Bruce led the Scots to victory against the English here and there remains a large granite boulder in the Glen which commemorates the victory. Reunited with our support crew, you can enjoy a picnic lunch on the shores of the Loch Trool and then continue through the hills for a long descent to the town of Newton Stewart. Recharge here with afternoon tea and scones before the final push back to Gatehouse of Fleet via an ancient military road. Celebrate your day’s big adventure in style with drinks and a gourmet dinner at the amazing Gather restaurant, located on a nearby farm. Read More

Terrain: Hilly
The unpaved surfaces on our Scotland Gravel bike tour are rated as Intermediate. Approximately 60% of the riding is unpaved. You can expect primarily well-made, smooth forest roads with small to moderate amounts of gravel. At times, there will be short sections of rougher road that may have chunky gravel as well as some potholes, ruts, or washboard surfaces, however there is always enough room to pick up a different line or go around obstacles. The terrain is a mixture of rolling hills and short, steep hills to keep you on your toes. On some days you will ride several miles of pavement before you reach gravel. Once on gravel roads, expect virtually no traffic and no services as you will be traversing national nature reserves and forest parks. Your guides will be able to drive some of the gravel roads with the support van - where this is not possible, the van will be available at strategic points throughout the day.
Our Scotland Gravel tour is best suited for Type 3 Riders who have experience riding gravel roads and are accustomed to hilly terrain. Type 2 riders who are comfortable riding gravel but are looking for less mileage can ride the short options and utilize the shuttles as indicated. Type 4 Riders will enjoy the extra mileage and climbs the avid route options offer. For those familiar with gravel riding and eager to experience every mile, yet mindful of their physical limits, our electric-assist bike option offers a comfortable and enjoyable solution.

This destination is best suited to guests who want to cycle every day. Because of the terrain and/or remoteness of the hotels and riding routes, there are few, if any, non-riding options available. If a non-rider wants to accompany a rider guest on this trip, they would need to spend many hours in the van and/or at the hotels on the trip. Due to this, we strongly discourage non-riders from this destination. As an alternative, call a Trek Travel Trip Consultant at 866-464-8735 for trip suggestions where more non-rider activities are available, such as:
Looking for a break from traffic and the usual routes? Our gravel rides are the perfect escape! While the amount of pavement varies from destination to destination, you can count on minimal traffic once you hit the dirt. And since you'll be off the beaten path, you may encounter fewer services - that's where our guides come in handy. They'll make sure you have everything you need, whether it's a flat tire fix or a local recommendation for the best post-ride treat. And with support from our team available on and off the bike, you'll have everything you need for a smooth and enjoyable ride - even through some of the bumps on the trail.
In the heart of the charming village of Gatehouse of Fleet, The Murray Arms has undergone a recent transformation to create a uniquely styled and welcoming hotel. In 2022, the family team of Duncan and Vicki McConchie completely refurbished this historic hotel which dates back to the 18th century. Each of the 14 bedrooms has been individually designed, providing great character and individuality. Arguably the centre piece of the hotel is the Burns Reading Room, where the country’s most famous poet Robert Burns composed the patriotic “Scots Wha Hae” in 1793; the country’s national anthem until recent times.

Both the Old Town and New Town together have been maintained as an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. See for yourself the majestic stone castles, bell towers, and universities. Full days can be dedicated to meandering the many neighborhoods, visiting art museums or galleries, and partaking in the classic Scottish sport of golf.
