Canvas Hotel

Treungen, Norway

Imagine hundreds of square miles of smooth granite, linked together by brown paths through lush vegetation. Imagine finishing your ride over a wooden bridge, onto a small island in a dark, quiet lake. Suddenly, in the middle of the rocks, you come upon a hotel like nothing you have ever seen. Traditional Mongolian yurt-style tents and specially designed house-tents dot the landscape all in a heavy, khaki-colored canvas. Small bridges connect the hotel to the trails on each side of this tiny island, and the biking remains exciting all the way to the hotel’s heart. Meanwhile, delectable cuisine characterizes every meal and is as distinctive as the hotel itself. Before dinner, have a chilly swim in the lake, take a warm bath in the tub on the dock, enjoy a steamy sauna, and a hot shower from a can hung between two trees. Combine all this into one-of-a-kind luxury after hours on a bike in this magical landscape. Expect a rustic atmosphere at the backcountry with all the comforts of a contemporary hotel room. Yurts feature one or two beds, wood burning stoves, bedside tables and private access. Bathroom facilities are primitive yet comfortable and private. Outdoor showers feature unique manually dispensed hot water. No television or wifi but cell service is excellent and cell phone data signal is strong.

The terrain in Norway is mountainous and rugged in nature. Riders can expect 3+ hours per day on their bikes in a remote landscape. Trails are well constructed and maintained. You'll experience a few hike-a-bike sections and a river crossing or two. Overall, it's a fantastic adventure. The Norway mountain biking trip is best suited for our Type 2 and 3 Riders with at least intermediate technical mountain biking skills. There is approximately 1,000 feet of climbing and descending through the terrain on this trip. Each day your guides will describe the featured ride and your supported options for the day. Those who want more miles and more technical terrain and those who want less may split into two groups in order to ride different trails or simply go at different speeds. The nature of the trails in Norway is that they are remote and un-marked, so a guide is necessary. If a group prefers to split off or start the day with a different ride option, our guides could take each group.
On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding options for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these options may need to be scheduled before your trip–please contact one of our Trip Consultants for more information. Expenses and/or related transportation to these activities may not be included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on this trip are:
    • Swimming
    • Hiking
    • Fishing
    • Canoeing
    • Shopping

See itinerary for specific daily ride distances and elevation options. On all of our vacations, Trek Travel strives to find quiet, paved secondary roads or bike paths to experience a region; busy roads are avoided as much as possible. Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. At times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Torp Sandefjord Airport (TRF) or Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL).

If riding the train from Oslo, disembark at the Sandefjord station. Travel time to/from Oslo is 1 hour and 48 minutes, and to Oslo Airport it is 2 hours 23 minutes. A shuttle bus meets all trains during the opening hours of the airport, and a bus trip takes four minutes to the airport terminal. The shuttle bus leaves the airport ten minutes before each train's scheduled departure. The bus is operated by NSB and is included in the price of the train ticket. There are 42 bus departures each day.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at TORP Sandefjord Airport (TRF) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. After a beautiful 2-hour shuttle transfer deep into the Telemark backcountry, we'll take a short hike into the magical Canvas hotel where you'll receive a brief orientation and get fitted to your Trek Remedy.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. You may take a taxi to the first night’s hotel for approximately $100.

    Planning For Your Trip

    Packing and Weather

From late June to early August, the weather is at its warmest and it never seems to get really dark. It’s a welcome respite after a long, dark and cold winter and like the flowers, the Norwegians bloom from the new-found sun and warmth. Late June to early August is when summer is at its peak, with temperatures that can reach 80°F. At the same time there is hardly any humidity in the air, and even at night temperatures can remain high. Packing List
