Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

The best time of the year to visit Rioja for outdoor activities is July and August. July is the sunniest and driest month of the year. August days can be hot but it does cool off in the evenings. In general, this region enjoys more comfortable temperatures than most of interior Spain with daily averages in the daytime ranging from 75F-80F (24C-27C) and highs reaching up to 88F (31C) with evening temperatures dropping after sunset by about 10 degrees (around 21C). While less likely in the summer months, rain is always a possibility so be prepared with the proper rain gear in order to best enjoy your Rioja Self-Guided bike tour. Packing List

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: Logroño, Spain

Discover the captivating city of Logroño, a treasure trove of history and traditions dating back to the Middle Ages. Immerse yourself in its rich heritage, shaped by the iconic Pilgrim's Route to Santiago de Compostela. Wander through charming cobbled streets and explore significant landmarks like the Santiago Matamoros church and the historic Cathedral of Santa María la Redonda. Don't miss the enchanting river Ebro and its picturesque bridges, including the iconic Puente de Piedra. Stroll the vibrant Paseo del Espolón, a hub of local life, and marvel at Logroño's Gothic spires, Mudejar towers, and baroque palaces. With churches, museums, and lively squares like Market Square, Logroño promises a delightful blend of history, architecture, and vibrant street culture. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

after

After: Bilbao, Spain

If you are planning on extending your Rioja vacation and exploring the dynamic city of Bilbao, there are a number of must-sees. The de-facto capital of the Basque country is a major city with a skyscraper-lined downtown but has a small city feel. It is surrounded by vast green mountains, a perfect combination of modern and natural elements with a buzzing energy and a ton of fun things to do. Don't miss out the Palacio Euskalduna, the town's concert hall, and the imposing Cathedral of Bilbao with its gothic beauty. The Fine Arts museum and the Basque Museum are also a must-do for those who have appreciation for art, but more than anything, make some time to marvel the works of the Guggenheim Museum. Designed by Frank Gehry, this architectural marvel is as interesting on the outside as it is on the inside. For the remainder of your time in Bilbao, take the funicular to appreciate the views, make sure you enjoy as many pinxto bars as possible, walk the narrow, winding streets of Casco Viejo, and have a drink in the cosmopolitan Plaza Nueva. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:
