Slovenia Bike Tour
I am excited to design this Slovenian bike tour because l love to go to the Julian Alps for outdoor adventures. Its pristine nature has always been a balm for my soul. Once I started to discover Slovenia more and I visited other parts, I understood very quickly that this country has so much more to offer. I fell in love with hilly Brda region on the Italian border not only because of its delicious wine and sweet cherries but mainly for its authenticity and warm-hearted people. They like to share their treasures and love for beautiful surrounding but they also value sustainable travel and tourism. Slovenia is the first country to have been, in its entirety, declared a Green Destination of the World. I hope you will come to love this magical, green place as much as I do!

Dobrodošli! Welcome to beautiful Slovenia, the first country ever to be declared a Global Green Destination! Your guides will meet you in the “green” capital city of Ljubljana. A short shuttle will bring you to a historical cafe in the middle of the countryside surrounded by breathtaking views of mountain peaks. After hosting a delicious picnic-style lunch, your Trek Travel guides will ensure that you have an excellent fit to your Trek bike while offering specific cycling tips for riding in Slovenia. You’ll then start with a rolling, scenic ride following the Sava River, passing through the medieval town of Radovljica, known as the "sweetest" Slovenian town for its traditions in beekeeping and honey, and more recently, chocolate-making. Views of the Julian Alps are getting closer and soon you see the most recognizable place in Slovenia – the glacial-fed Lake Bled, with its signature tear-shaped island in the middle. This Slovenian jewel is your home for next two nights. This evening, you and your companions will gather for a glass of wine on the hotel terrace with a view of Slovenia's oldest castle sitting majestically in front of you, to then board a traditional wooden gondola, a Pletna, to the tiny Bled island and its Baroque church. Make sure to ring the 16th century bell and make a wish! We'll be back in time for dinner, to taste our chef's seasonal delights .

Start your day with breakfast on the hotel’s patio before beginning your ride towards the blue-green waters of Lake Bohinj, the largest lake in Slovenia. Sitting between Bled and Bohinj, it is covered with pine tree forests and tranquil pastures and, with the Slovenian Alps as a backdrop, it is truly picture perfect! The shingle-covered wooden cottages represent the characteristic feature of the Pokljuka mountain pastures and were once used by the shepherds as their homes and where they made the traditional sour milk. To make sure you have enough energy for the climb, experience a typical, homemade snack at our favorite cheese farm before climbing up to the plateau for lunch. You can also choose to take a shuttle up to lunch and then back to Bled to have extra time to explore the town or indulge in a relaxing afternoon along the lakeshore. After lunch, a long downhill will take you back to Bled where you can spend the rest of the day at your leisure. Arriving

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your bike tour in Slovenia, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU). The Ljubljana airport is about fifteen miles (24 kilometers) from the town center. You can take a taxi (approximately 25 euros) directly to the hotel, or a bus which departs hourly. Most of the hotel also arrange airport shuttles.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Urban Boutique Hotel Center (4 Štefanova ulica, 1000 Ljubljana) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. You’ll then shuttle 40 minutes to your lunch spot for a local fresh picnic. After lunch, your guides will do a bike fitting to ensure your comfort on your Trek Domane this week, before you take your first spin through the countryside to the beautiful Lake Bled. Please have your first day’s riding gear handy and separate from your other luggage to facilitate the bike fitting and ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Rikli Balance Hotel (+386 4 579 17 00) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. You may take a taxi to the first night’s hotel for approximately 80 euros. The trip takes around 30 minutes from the airport.

Leaving

You will say farewell to your guides at 10:00 AM at the Hotel Gredič, Dobrovo. You’ll depart by private shuttle for the Tronchetto, in Venice, arriving close to 12:00 PM. The Isola of the Tronchetto offers several connections to all areas of the city. It is only a stone throw away from the vaporetto (water bus) stop - with the vaporettos you can reach any point of the city in only a few minutes. The Ferry Boat public transport service is also available for the Lido di Venezia and you can use the People Mover, to reach the Passenger Terminal of the port of Venice or Piazzale Roma from where there are bus links to Venice Marco Polo Airport and Treviso Airport. Piazzale Roma is close to the main Santa Lucia railway station for Venice. Please do not book seats before 2:00 PM, allowing adequate connection time for any ongoing travel or possible traffic delays. The airport in Venice (VCE) is eight miles (13 kilometers) from the city. You can reach it by taxi or shuttle bus; please do not schedule a flight prior to 4:00 PM. If you are going to spend some time in Venice before the trip starts, there are many options to get into central Venice from the airport, including bus, land taxi, or the famous water taxi. Land taxis outside the arrivals terminal are plentiful. Private water taxis cost approximately 80-120 euros. For bus service, the ATVO direct coach (www.atvo.it) takes you directly to Piazzale Roma, the end of the road in historic Venice and the entrance to the Grand Canal, in 20 minutes for six euros.

Planning For Your Trip

Packing and Weather

Spring and fall in Slovenia are usually clear and sunny, with warm daytime temperatures (65F-80F) and evening temperatures 10-15 degrees cooler. Most days you'll be comfortable biking in a short-sleeved jersey or synthetic T-shirt. (When you head out in the morning, you might want to wear a lightweight jacket or vest, arm warmers, and knee or leg warmers.) Rain is always a possibility, however, so be prepared with wet-weather gear in order to best enjoy your vacation. Packing List

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana is one of Europe's hidden gems. It is one of the smallest European capitals, one of Europe's greenest, and definitely the most magical. It was the European Commission's Green Capital of Europe in 2016. Car traffic is restricted in the centre, leaving the leafy banks of the emerald-green Ljubljanica River, which flows through the city's heart, free for pedestrians and cyclists. The promenade, the squares, and the ancient buildings, as well as the markets and galleries, the restaurants and cafes all come together to create a simply wonderful urban atmosphere. The city is surrounded by parks and areas of protected nature. It’s a green capital of a green country which offers relaxing time while enjoying the sights. after

After: Venice, Italy

Whether you’ve never been to Venice or have been there 20 times, there’s always something new to discover. Indeed, even the most seasoned visitors get lost in the city’s labyrinthine network of islands, bridges, pedestrian alleys, and canals. And therein lies the beauty of the destination: afternoons spent wandering from palace to piazza, exploring the small art museums, shopping the stalls that line the streets, and encountering a fresh side of Venice, a fascinating amalgamation of influences— Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Italian—every time you round a corner. The UNESCO World Heritage site comprises the city of Venice and its lagoon situated in the Veneto Region of northeast Italy. Founded in the fifth century and spread over 118 small islands, Venice became a major maritime power in the 10th century. The whole city is an extraordinary architectural masterpiece in which even the smallest building contains works by some of the world’s greatest artists.
