Quintessential Luxury of Chianti’s Famous Castles and Wines

Truly, what more could one want and desire.

Today’s ride is a stunning loop from the village of Gaiole in Chianti heading out of the mountains and winding through the vineyards. Around 10km, the famed Castello di Brolio is just off our path. After passing the castle, the mountainous landscapes of Chianti give way to olive groves, vineyards, and gentle rolling roads snaking through the countryside. Around 30km into the ride, you will pass through Castelnuovo Berardenga, this is a great spot to refuel as you begin your ascent up Monteluco. The next 14.5km will take you to the top of today’s climb, which will average just over 3%. After ascending to the top, there is a little store to top up on water, and then you can enjoy the descent which will take you almost all the way back to our hotel.

What you need to know

RIDE DETAILS
The first 25km of today’s ride is mostly downhill, averaging -0.1%. And different points of the ride, on a clear day, Sienna is off in the distance less then 20km away.

WEATHER
Cycling in Chianti, the temperatures can be relatively cooler throughout the year, relative to those in Sienna. It is always wise to take layers with you, and prepare for the unexpected. Chianti seems to receive slightly more rain then some of the surrounding areas.

FUEL
Great locations to refuel on the ride, 10.2km there is a cafe and the Enoteca of The Castello di Brolio. The next recommended stop for food and water is just before the 30km mark in Castelnuovo Berardenga. The final spot is on top of Monteluco at 44.2km.

While you’re in town

The village of Radda in Chainti is just 11km away. For those looking to explore another quaint village with fantastic wines and restaurants, it is worth a stop. Bar Dante is a great place to sit and sip a drink, while meandering through the village you will find great cycling shops, and Enoteca’s.

If you have a desire to cycle the White Roads on a vintage bike, simply stop in to La Bottegga and talk to Emanuele Nepi (he is one of the owners). He will be able to help you find a vintage bike to rent, along with getting you in the vintage gear.

Siena is only 25km away, and it is well worth the trip. From exploring the Duomo di Siena, Tower of Mangia, and the Piazza del Campo are highly recommended. The La Bottega dei Sapori Antichi is a great spot to grab a sandwhich to go, while GROM – Il Gelato come una volta & Gelateria Kopakabana are our favorite spots for Gelato.

What to know for your first bike trip

A cyclist on an ebike on an open road with rolling hills

Traveling for your first cycling vacation can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Read on for some of our most common guest questions answered from, “What do I pack?” to our top tips for traveling abroad.

“I can’t wait for my trip, but what do I pack?”
We get this question a lot. Which is why we’ve crafted a handy-dandy (and printable!) packing list tailored to what kind of trip you’re taking. Whether it be a luxury week away in Tuscany or a Ride Camp in Texas.

Pro-tip: It’s a great idea to pack your first day’s cycling clothes and riding gear in your carry-on bag so it’s easily accessible should there be any complications with your luggage.

“What safety measures are taken on trips?”
Great rides are safe rides, which is why we take safety seriously. Along with Flare-R front and rear lights included on every bike, we also make WaveCel helmets, Trek’s newest and safest innovation in helmet safety, available to guests on-trip. You can also read some of our cycling safety tips here before you go, and our guides will remind everyone about safety while on-trip.

We have also implemented enhanced standards on our trips to follow CDC guidelines related to COVID-19 safety.

“I have never been to this region before, what will the weather be like while I’m there?”
While we can’t predict all outcomes, you will find a general overview of what weather to expect on every trip page under the “Travel Details” tab.

“How do I know my bike on-trip will be a comfortable fit?”
When you book your trip, our Trip Consultants work with you to determine your size and fit. Bike sizes, measurements, and geometry can vary greatly from brand to brand, so we highly recommend stopping into your local Trek Bicycle shop for help with gathering accurate measurements. On the first day of your trip, your guides will adjust your bike to your comfort and preferences to ensure an excellent fit and are available to make adjustments throughout the week. Learn more about measuring your bike and fit here.

“I love the saddle on my bike at home, can I bring it?”
Absolutely. Although we provide men’s and women’s specific saddles on our trips, we know the most comfortable saddle out there is often the one you’re used to riding at home. Simply bring your saddle along with you and our guides will install it on your Trek Travel bike at the bike fitting before your first ride.

“How do I know where to meet my guides at the start of the trip?”
You can find all the arrival, departure, and meeting details under the “Travel Details” tab on every trip page, as well as recommendations for what to do and where to stay before and after your trip.

“What’s the support like? Do I have to ride all the miles? What happens if I get a flat?”
Your guides are there to accommodate riders of all types and abilities. With a typical Classic trip guide team consisting of one guide on their bike during the day’s route and another sweeping back and forth in the support van, you’re free to ride, sightsee, rest, or shuttle at any part of the route throughout the day. Got a flat or other mechanical issue? Guides will take care of it for you. No need to worry. Please note that support levels vary depending on trip style booked. For self-guided, ride camps, or semi-guided trips, please review your trip details for more information.

“How will I know where I’m going?”
Each bike is equipped with a Garmin Edge 1030 GPS computer pre-loaded with all the route options for the day. Once you select your route, you’ll navigate the route with the help of turn-by-turn directions. You can learn more about our Garmins here. In addition to the Garmin, you’ll have access to the routes on your phone through the Ride with GPS app.

What if I like to ride at a more leisurely pace than the rest of the group?
No need to worry. Each day of your bike tour is yours to discover and explore at your own pace based on what you want to see and do. Most of our vacations include multiple ride options each day to accommodate the different ability levels that regularly occur. Plus, if you feel like you need a boost, you can always reserve an e-bike. They’re a guest favorite and a whole lot of fun.

“Will there be laundry?”
Although laundry is available at many of the properties on our trips, we recommend confirming with your Trip Consultant for your specific trip. It’s also a great idea to pack a small amount of soap or detergent to do a quick kit wash in your room halfway through the trip.

What are your top tips for guests going abroad for the first time?
1. Make sure your passport is valid and you have the appropriate travel documentation. As a general rule, passports should have at least six months of validity when traveling internationally. This means that your passport’s expiration date should be at least six months after your final day of travel. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk with your Trip Consultant.

2. Invest in Travel Protection. Sometimes the unexpected happens. Whether it’s lost luggage, a medical emergency, or suddenly being unable to travel. Travel Protection will help mitigate financial loss in the event that things just don’t go as planned. Learn more about our offerings here.

3. Pack a power converter. Plug styles also differ from country to country, so it’s key to pack universal power adaptors and converters while traveling outside of the United States.

The force behind our e-bikes

two people riding e-bikes on a paved, waterfront path with palm trees in the background

If you look around your home, it wouldn’t be surprising to find a Bosch appliance, but did you know that Bosch is also responsible for engineering the pedal-assist technology that powers our e-bikes? We sat down with some of the e-bike experts at Bosch to learn more about the motors that make our bikes go.

Who is Bosch?

Bosch was founded in 1886 and contributed one of the key technologies that helped make internal combustion possible for use in automobiles – the magneto ignition device. Today, Bosch technology is present in a variety of industries around the world. In fact, it’s difficult to go through a day without Bosch technology touching your life in some way. Bosch sensors are in more than 50 percent of cell phones, Bosch home appliances and power tools are found in homes and worksites globally, Bosch security cameras adorn buildings all around the world, while Bosch hydraulic technology is present in the Panama Canal and Tower Bridge in London. Virtually every vehicle on the road in the world today has Bosch technology on it, and Bosch was the first to bring life-saving safety technologies like anti-lock braking and electronic stability control to market. Known for its quality and dependability, Bosch’s technology and expertise in electric motors, sensor technology, displays, and lithium-ion batteries makes them the leading and most-qualified supplier for electric bike systems.

When and why did Bosch start making e-bike motors?

Bosch first forayed into e-bikes in 2011, when the Automotive Electronics division launched its first e-bike system and essentially shaped the modern e-bike as we know it today. Once a small startup within Automotive Electronics, e-bike is now its own independent division within Bosch, which truly demonstrates just how far e-bikes have come and how highly valued they are within the company as a pillar of Bosch’s mobility solutions sector.

So, why e-bikes? Broadly speaking, Bosch sees the mobility of the future characterized by three elements: automation, electrification, and connectivity. E-bikes exemplify these traits, and broaden Bosch’s definition of mobility to include more than just automotive transportation. Mobility is a basic human need, in whatever form it takes to get from place to place, and e-bikes unite technology with healthy human-powered mobility, which really stays true to our motto, “Invented for Life.”

What can you tell us about the components that you’ll find in the Trek Verve+ 3 that we ride on our trips?

The Trek Verve+ 3 sports the Active Line Plus, a well-balanced Class 1 drive unit with a max assist speed of 20 mph or 32 km/h. It has enough torque to succeed on hills while maintaining excellent battery range, bringing simple enjoyment to everyday riding. It’s quiet, reliable, and has barely any noticeable pedal resistance. The power of the Active Line Plus is delivered smoothly to achieve a natural riding sensation.

Purion is our compact, easy-to-read display that’s mounted on the left handlebar with the e-bike assist controls integrated within it. The display provides a clear overview of the charge status, speed, riding mode, range, trip distance, and total distance. All the important details are just a thumb-click away, perfect for riders who want simplified information and controls.

Bosch’s PowerTube lithium ion batteries have the power you need for any ride, and are easily rechargeable from any standard 110v wall outlet. The Verve+ 3 integrates its PowerTube 500 battery within the frame for worry-free riding, and a safety latch prevents the PowerTube from falling out even on challenging terrain.

How much power is in a typical e-bike battery?

Our e-bike batteries have their capacity measured in watt hours (Wh) and come in several sizes ranging from 400 Wh to 625 Wh. On average, you’re paying roughly 17 cents for every battery charge, and traversing anywhere from 35 to 100 miles on a single charge, depending on various factors (which you can learn about on our interactive e-bike Range Calculator page). It’s tough to compete with that level of energy efficiency versus a car!

Are there any surprising statistics or facts to know about?

  • • Our Speed, Torque, and Cadence sensors make over 1,000 measurements per second as you ride, which translate to smooth, realistic, and quick responses to every pedal push you make.
  • • Our 4-amp Charger will take your e-bike battery from zero to full charge in roughly 4.5 hours.
  • • The Purion display also lets you control your integrated lighting by holding the “+” key.
  • • As a company, Bosch has made good on our promise to achieve carbon neutrality by 2020.
  • • The Robert Bosch foundation, a nonprofit foundation, holds 92 percent of the company’s shares, seven percent are in the hands of Robert Bosch’s descendants, and the company holds the remaining one percent.
  • • Our complete e-bike system features the UL 2849 safety standard from the prestigious Underwriters Laboratory (UL), a strong commitment to long-term component quality for peace of mind.
  • • Want a tune-up? Our field team has trained over 4,400 retailers in North America to bring e-bike expertise to every neighborhood.
  • • E-bikes are so much fun, it’s virtually impossible to complete an e-bike ride without smiling.

What’s the most important thing to know about e-bikes?

E-bikes are even more fun with friends! Riders on your Trek Travel trip can enjoy the same sights and climb the same hills regardless of differences in riding skill or fitness level, making a tour by e-bike an unforgettable experience for everyone.

2020 Guide of the Year: Zack Jones

Meet Trek Travel's legendary Cycling Guide, Zack Jones

Each year, Trek Travel celebrates one of our guides for his or her tremendous season, exceptional hospitality, and downright awesome attitude. We are proud to announce our 2020 Guide of the Year, Zack Jones!

Winning Guide of the Year is a huge honor. To be nominated for this prestigious award, guides have to earn top-notch evaluations from guests, co-guides, and the office team. The top five guides are then voted on by the Trek Travel management team to determine which guide provided best-in-class hospitality and reflected our company values. The winning guide receives a custom merino jersey with “Guide of the Year” embroidered on it as well as a $1,000 travel credit to anywhere in the world.

This year’s winner, Zack, has been guiding with Trek Travel almost as long as the company has been in existence. He is a fantastic photographer, and you’ll see photos from his adventures across our website and social media channels. We talked to him to learn a little bit more about his experience guiding, how he feels about winning Guide of the Year, and where he is headed in 2021.

Why do you guide?

“Guiding allows me to lead, share knowledge, and expose culture in stunning places with amazing people, incredible food, and luxurious accommodations, all from the seat of a bike. Those are the obvious reasons, and who wouldn’t want a job profile like that? The reality is, there are a lot of aspects to guiding that are not for everyone, and many of those I find incredibly fulfilling. Guiding is a lot of challenging work and long hours. It is not uncommon to be busy with diverse tasks from five am to ten or eleven at night, and most days, I love it! I get to be the co-captain of life-changing experiences for guests, and the spontaneous moments and reactions are always the most epic and rewarding. Guiding is very analog and occurs in the real world. Digital tools assist in being a better guide, but most of what I do as a guide feels like what my mind, body, and hands were created to do. In a world that often feels increasingly disconnected, guiding is uniquely connecting, bringing guests to new cultures, physical accomplishments, sensory experiences, and relating to each other and the world. Perhaps the biggest reason I come back year after year is the connection I get with my colleagues. There is no other way to describe the uniqueness and depth of the relationships that develop over weeks, months, and years than to call them family.”

What are some epic moments or favorite memories from your travels?

“There is not enough space to list them all, but some standouts include: Riding up to Crater Lake Rim in Oregon and hearing a loud gasp of genuine awe from my guests every single time. The pleasant surprise of beer being served to our group at a dinner in a Buddhist monastery in Japan. My WNBA-level co-guide and I getting schooled in basketball by two locals half our height in Guatemala. “Kidnapping” our guests after dinner with a Mapuché family in Chile to take them on an unexpected viewing of an erupting volcano at night. Breaking from the day’s plan to get guests and co-guides to jump into the fjord in Norway on a hot day. And persuading 16 guests from Japan to wear goatees, mustaches, and cowboy hats and sing Happy Birthday at a surprise dinner for Gary Fisher in Moab. Just to name a few.”

Where are you hoping to guide in 2021?

“Anywhere! Travel has been closed for so long that it would be a gift to guide in any destination. Having said that, my wife and I just welcomed a new tiny human into our lives in March, Astoria Lucille Jones. Now that I have achieved “Guide of the Year,” the bar is high, and the only way to top it is to work to be “Dad of the Year.” So it looks like my schedule and my skills will focus on guiding our little girl through the journey of learning to be a human. And who knows, perhaps there will be a trip or two in the fall in Europe that I can join.”

How did you feel about winning guide of the year?

“Wait… WHO??? Another “Zack” is guiding for Trek Travel? WAIT… that’s ME!” I was utterly blown away by the honor as it was so unexpected. The year 2020 has been incredibly challenging for me beyond just the pandemic. There were many moments that I felt I was working hard to be my best self and yet falling short. So when it came time to announce the winner of the Guide of the Year, I found myself mentally scanning the faces and personalities of all of my deserving colleagues/friends and picturing who it would be without ever considering it would be me. I am immensely grateful and proud to carry the torch for 2020. “

What else are you looking forward to in 2021?

“I am really looking forward to how we rediscover connecting to each other and the world. I hope this unique time has helped us reflect on what is most important in life and filter out the noise that holds us back from a life of meaning and connection. I am looking forward to in-person conversations, noisy restaurants, group rides, hugs, high-fives, travel with my wife, going home, and introducing my little girl to family and friends.”
