This was truly the trip of a lifetime. Every aspect of the trip was well planned out. I have biked in many awesome and scenic places before, but nothing quite like the Dolomites. Completing the challenging climbs on this trip was definitely satisfying, but not half as satisfying as the enormous mountains and geological features around every twist and turn in the road. The excellent food, friendly cyclists, and other planned activities on this trip only add to the wonderful experience.

DL:riding in the Dolomites (up to Passo Giau)

I've been fortunate to travel to 50+ countries and cycled in many of those. This was definitely one of the best week of cycling I've ever experienced. The scenery of the Dolomites is simply incredible and each day, when you think the views can't get any better, they do. It was a privilege to be able to ride so many of the incredible climbs and descents I've read so much about and to be taken care of by Trek Travel in style.

No words can explain the total experience. Unbelievable, Exhausting, Exhilarating, Mind Boggling and Love Every Minute of it. The guides are great guides and hosts. They are very knowledgeable about the area and do anything to help you out. They really got to know each and every one of us personally. You couldn't ask for better guides. The food and wine was unbelievable. The whole experience was fantastic, plus I rode with a great group of people.

Know Before You Go!

We want you to be fully prepared for your cycling vacation of a lifetime. This involves making sure that you choose the appropriate trip for you and that every aspect of your experience is flawless. Each Trek Travel trip is unique to ensure maximum enjoyment every time.

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • Race-day Overview: The Maratona is a challenging amateur cycling event requiring significant stamina and training. The long route covers 86 miles (138 km) with 14,000 feet (4,230 m) of climbing across iconic Dolomite passes—Sella Ronda (Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella, and Gardena) plus Giau, Falzarego, and Valparola. Most amateur riders finish in 7–9 hours, depending on fitness.
  • Race-day Support: Roads are closed to traffic for safety. Trek Travel vehicles are not allowed on course. Your guides ride along the race course with you, offering support, encouragement, and route guidance. You’ll find several official feed stations along the route, plus a dedicated Trek Travel snack stop. Riders should be comfortable changing flats, as guide assistance may not be immediately available.
  • Race-day Timing: Breakfast begins at 4:00 AM, with a 5:30 AM roll-out from the hotel and a 5K ride to the start for warm-up. The race begins at 6:30 AM in numbered waves to manage flow. Each route has cut-off times at key points that must be met to continue on that route: km 55 (11:30) after the Sella Ronda loop, and km 76 (11:50). You need to be at km 76 by 11:50 to proceed on the long course, otherwise you will continue on the medium course. An electronic timing chip attached to your bike records your time at various checkpoints on the course and at the finish line, providing a total time for the route you completed.
  • Riding skills: This is one of the most challenging trips we offer, with hardly any flat riding and lots of elevation gain each day. Expect long sustained climbs, narrow roads, technical descends with tight turns, and long hours in the saddle. Advanced fitness as well as bike handling skills are key for this trip.
  • Traffic: Because of their incredible vistas, these roads are popular with all kinds of travelers. Except on Maratona day, which is closed to vehicles, expect traffic—cars, buses, and motorcycles—especially on the Sellaronda. Riders should be comfortable sharing the road.
  • Maratona Apparel: As part of your race packet, you will receive the official 2027 Maratona jersey, a Carvico vest, and other event merchandise. You will select your jersey size with your Trip Consultant during the trip registration process. If a different size is needed, exchanges can be made at the Maratona Village the day before the race. Additional Maratona apparel is available for purchase online or at the Village.
  • Weather and Packing: The weather is notoriously unpredictable in the mountains. You can experience all seasons in one day so bringing layers is key! Layering is the best way to regulate your body temperature. This tried-and-true strategy is all about slipping layers on and off as your activity level or the weather changes. The key items of clothing to remember are long-fingered gloves, arm warmers, leg warmers, a vest, and a rain jacket for the summit and descent. See the FAQs for more information.

Before and After Your Trip

FAQs

Daytime temperatures can reach 80ºF (27ºC) and can go higher in the low-lying valleys. Evenings tend to be cool and fresh. Even in summer months, mountain weather conditions can change dramatically from one hour to the next. In just a few minutes a thunder storm can roll in when the sky was perfectly clear, and in just a few hours the temperatures can drop from extremely hot temperatures to temperatures that are below freezing. Therefore, we recommend bringing a variety of cycling gear that prepares you for cold, wet, or warm weather. Please, be prepared by bringing layers for cool descents and rain gear for possible rain showers. Layers are key when riding in the mountains! View our Packing List
