Activity Level: Level 3
Terrain: Hilly
The unpaved surfaces on our New Mexico Gravel Bike Tour are rated as Intermediate. The riding features a mix of smooth, hardpacked high-desert roads and rougher, more adventurous stretches of gravel. Northern New Mexico offers rolling high-desert terrain, forested mountain passes, and rugged backcountry riding, with most of the route between 6,500 and 9,750 feet (1,981 to 2,970 m.) above sea level, where the elevation adds an extra challenge to every climb. Day 4 features a 12.5-mile (20 km) climb with 3,250 feet (990 m.) of elevation gain and an average gradient of 5%, however, you are rewarded with a paved descent back to town. The support van will be stationed at key points along the route, as it cannot always follow the entire route.
Our New Mexico Gravel Bike Tour is best suited for Level 3 riders seeking an adventure on unpaved roads. Level 2 riders can opt for shorter routes with van shuttles, while Level 4 riders will enjoy the added mileage, climbing and challenging gravel sections of the avid routes. For those familiar with gravel riding and eager to experience every mile, yet mindful of their physical limits, our electric-assist bike option offers a comfortable and enjoyable solution.
