Cycle the Douro Valley from the riverside town of Amarante to the terraces above Pinhão, on roads shaped by centuries of wine production.

From the calm banks of the Tâmega River in Amarante to the Douro's terraced hillsides between Peso da Régua and Pinhão, this cycling tour through northern Portugal's UNESCO-listed wine country moves through one of the world's oldest wine landscapes. The roads are quiet, but the connection between land and tradition runs deep—working estates open their doors, a wood-fire lunch is cooked without electricity, and the valley is best seen from the deck of a traditional rabelo. Each day balances time in the saddle with unhurried afternoons and evenings at two of Portugal's most exceptional riverside properties, where the local cuisine and full-bodied wines make the Douro one of Europe's most remarkable destinations.

Trip Wows
  • Immerse yourself in one of Europe's most beautiful cycling landscapes, riding the UNESCO-listed Douro Valley along the river and into the vineyard-lined slopes above

  • Stay at a Relais & Châteaux manor on the Tâmega and a Michelin Key wine estate on the Douro—two of Portugal's finest riverside properties

  • Sit down to a lunch cooked without electricity at a family farm where the old ways are still the best way

  • Glide along the Douro on a traditional wooden boat, the valley opening up around you as you sip a glass of Port

  • Taste wines from century-old vines at an exclusive tasting on the terrace of Quinta da Vacaria, a 400-year-old estate perched above the Douro

The working quintas on the Douro

Step inside two of the Douro's most storied wine estates—stay at a 17th-century property perched above the river and lunch at a secluded 18th-century family quinta on its banks.

What Guests are Saying

It’s been a pleasure to design this trip, bringing together the elements that define the Douro at its best. There’s something striking about these roads—peaceful and quiet, yet consistently challenging in a way that feels rewarding rather than overwhelming. Paired with staying in two luxury hotels, and meals and wines that are deeply rooted in the region, it’s the perfect way to settle in and discover this new region!

Know Before You Go!

We want you to be fully prepared for your cycling vacation of a lifetime. This involves making sure that you choose the appropriate trip for you and that every aspect of your experience is flawless. Each Trek Travel trip is unique to ensure maximum enjoyment every time.

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • Dining: When dining in Portugal, meals are meant to be enjoyed slowly and together. Service often moves at a relaxed pace, allowing time to linger at the table, enjoy conversation, and savor each dish as it arrives. This unhurried approach is very much part of Portuguese food culture and adds to the pleasure of the experience. Settle in, embrace the rhythm, and let the flavours unfold naturally.
  • Weather: April and October are the two months in the Douro Valley most likely to see rain during the season. April typically experiences 13–15 days of rainfall with around 3–3.5 inches (80–90 mm) of total precipitation, while October sees approximately 14 rainy days and about 4 inches (100 mm) of rainfall as autumn sets in. Showers are usually brief and passing, but you should be prepared for variable weather during these months.
  • E-Bikes: E-bike speeds vary worldwide due to local regulations, which determine how fast you can ride with assistance. See the E-bike speed chart to see the maximum speeds allowed in each region.
