Today's ride is very special as the route takes you to Pea Ridge, one of the best-preserved Civil War sites in the country. On the 7th and 8th of March 1862, nearly 26,000 soldiers fought to determine whether Missouri would remain under Union control, and whether or not Federal armies could continue their offensive south through the Mississippi River Valley. The battle of Pea Ridge was one of the few in which a Confederate army outnumbered the Union. By defeating the Confederates, Union forces established Federal control of most of Missouri and northern Arkansas. With only 1,500 feet of climbing it may be one of the flatter rides of week, but there are still some hills to keep you on your toes. As you ride through the quiet serene country roads surrounding this area you may get lost in the seclusion and sanctity of the lush green hills.
