Girona Gravel Bike Tour
I've taken a couple of other guided trips with different groups in the past and comparatively, I thought this was a first rate trip that allowed us to see the area, ride routes we wouldn't have found on our own and have a nice, relaxing vacation....I would recommend Trek Travel to any of my friends.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the hotel at 11:00 AM on the first day of the trip. After a short round of introductions and talks, enjoy a casual Trek Travel picnic, known here as "pica-pica," to make sure you are fueled before setting off on your first ride. While you finish eating, your guides will install any saddles or other equipment you brought for your trip. As soon as you are ready, we'll jump right into getting you comfortable on your Trek Checkpoint, expertly prepared for gravel riding, and we’ll ensure you have the perfect bike fit. Today's route is a beautiful introduction to the gravel paths in and around Girona. You'll enjoy gradual climbs and windy paths along the Riu Ter (Ter River) and return through the town of Sant Gregori. After the ride, you'll get checked in and be able to enjoy some downtime before meeting the group for dinner in one of our favorite local restaurants. During dinner, your guides will fill you in on all the adventures to come this week!

Today's Ride:

Saint Gregori Loop
Approximately 25 miles | 42 km with 950 feet | 301 m of climbing

Hotel:

Hotel Nord 1901

Included Meals:

Lunch | Dinner

Rise and shine and get excited! After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we'll gather for our first big ride through the Spanish countryside. Today, our route takes you to Costa Brava, a coastal region of Catalonia with incredible views and crystal-clear waters. You'll ride on a variety of terrain to get there, including forest roads, greenways, and canal paths. Your guides will be prepared with delicious sandwiches from the local panadería for whenever you'd like to have lunch. Your destination today is simple: you'll stop when you get to the Mediterranean Sea! After taking in the views, you'll turn around and head back through lush forests and long-abandoned relics of Catalan history. One thing is for sure, it'll be away from car traffic, noise, and busy roads. Tonight, you're free to explore Girona and choose a favorite dinner destination.

Today's Ride:

Girona to Costa Brava Loop
Approximately 58 miles | 93km with 1,800 feet | 549 m of climbing

Short Option:

Girona to Costa Brava with shuttle
Approximately 30 miles with 839 feet of climbing

Hotel:

Hotel Nord 1901

Included Meals:

Breakfast | Lunch

Wake up to strong coffee and a solid breakfast in preparation for another beautiful day of riding on some of the nicest packed gravel and forest roads on the north side of Girona. Our route will take us through the quiet Catalan countryside on rural roads, along old farmhouses and waterways. You'll pass close to the town of Banyoles, where the 1992 Barcelona Olympics rowing stages were held. As you continue on, you'll tackle some short, punchy climbs and thrilling descents in typical gravel fashion as you ride through the small mountain range of La Mota at the foot of one of the tallest peaks in the area, Rocacorba. You'll be rewarded with tremendous views of the Pyrenees in the distance, the serenity of the forest, and the thrill of discovering the roads less traveled. Once back at the hotel, you can have a late lunch, choose to relax in preparation for tomorrow's big day or enjoy your afternoon in town, perhaps taking a walk through the narrow, winding lanes to the Girona Cathedral, the Jewish Quarter, or along medieval walls. Tonight, dinner is on your own in this lively town. Be sure to make the most of it, as this town is buzzing with cycling cafés, music culture, international cuisine, parks, and medieval sights. Your guides are always happy to steer you toward the best spots in the town they call home.

Included Meals:

Breakfast

Fuel up this morning as we prepare to take on the gravel version of some classic Girona climbs. This special route showcases the best of all the region's surface options, from smooth pavement to some more technical gravel. You'll ride through Cassa de la Selva, known for its cork production, and shortly afterward you'll begin your first big climb of the day to the small church of Santa Pellaia. The paved portion of this climb is widely known as the Hincapie climb, a favorite because of it's smooth, steady grade. Enjoy the paved, winding descent which leads you to back to gravel and the start of your next famous climb known as Els Àngels. Over the next eight miles, you'll climb through the forest on a mix of dirt and pavement. When you reach the Sanctuary at the top, your efforts will be rewarded with lunch and epic panoramic views across Girona and its surroundings. A somewhat steep and twisty dirt descent brings you back into town, where you can relax and enjoy the last evening in Girona. Tonight, we'll gather again for a group dinner to relive the magic and share some special stories of an epic week of gravel adventures.

Today's Ride:

Girona to Els Àngels and Santa Pellaia Loop
Approximately 39 miles | 63 km with 3,600 feet | 1,097 m of climbing

The unpaved surfaces on our Girona Gravel bike tour are rated as Advanced. About 80% of the riding is unpaved. You can expect a mixture of smooth dirt roads with sparse to moderate gravel as well as sections of loose, deeper gravel, singletrack and doubletrack. The support van cannot always follow on these sections, but will be posted up at strategic points along the route. Girona is located between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava in northeastern Spain. The terrain is undulating with rolling hills along the coast and more hills as you venture inland, with Day 4 being more mountainous with several climbs and descents. Discover Girona Gravel is best suited for our Level 4 Riders with gravel or singletrack mountain biking experience. If you have gravel experience but are concerned about your physical ability to conquer the mileage and elevation, you may want to try our Domane+ electric-assist bike option.
NON-RIDING ACTIVITIES:
On most Trek Travel trips, we offer non-riding suggestions for riders who want to take the afternoon off, or travel companions who want to spend little or no time in the saddle. Some of these suggestions may need to be scheduled before your trip. Expenses and related transportation for these activities are not included in the trip price. Some non-riding options on the Discover Girona Gravel bike trip are:
  • Experience Girona's rich history and vibrant culture
  • Explore La Bisbal d'Empordà, a beautifully preserved medieval town known for its ceramics
  • Visit Salvador Dalí’s castle, a gift to his wife Gala
  • Tour a local vineyard and taste the famous Catalan wines
  • Discover ancient ruins
  • Swim in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean

See itinerary for specific daily ride distances and elevation options. This is a Discover Gravel trip. Our itineraries are an approximation of our trips. Trek Travel strives to offer every guest a vacation of a lifetime on every trip. On our gravel cycling vacations, Trek Travel seeks to find well maintained, non-technical gravel roads and bike paths; unmaintained roads and roads with ruts or deep or chunky gravel are avoided as much as possible. However, gravel roads are dynamic by nature. Road surfaces change throughout the year depending on maintenance (grading, adding new gravel) and weather, particularly rain. Our guides will be constantly monitoring road conditions and may change the routes as needed to provide the best possible riding experience. In addition, as with all of our trips, at times routes, hotels, activities, etc. listed here may change at the discretion of the trip designer or guides to improve the trip experience.

Averages and totals are calculated from the "today's ride" option for each day.

Before and After Your Trip

before

Before: Girona, Spain

Girona has long enjoyed the reputation for being the richest town in Spain. Founded in the first century BC, it soon became the most important point on the Spanish Via Augusta. Enjoy the reflections of the colorful pastel row houses on the River Onyar before crossing the river and wandering the narrow cobblestone streets of the medieval Jewish quarter. Admire the cathedral from below and then enjoy a 15-minute walk atop the old town walls to get great views of the town.Search out our favourite café, La Fabrica in the old quarter, where local and professional cyclists training in Girona sometimes stop for coffee. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

after

After: Barcelona, Spain

The Catalonian capital of Barcelona boasts a beautiful coastline; a great diversity of culture, leisure, and shopping; creative, innovative gastronomy; and an avant-garde spirit. Be sure to check out some of the fantastic architecture and art of Antonio Gaudí, such as Sagrada Familia or Parc Guell. The Gothic quarter is the heart of Barcelona’s old town, with narrow cobblestone streets on which Picasso and Miró lived long ago. Las Ramblas is a long tree-lined shoppers’ paradise that leads to the sea. Be sure not to miss the fascinating Boqueria market for a slice of local life. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:
