A Trek Travel Engagement Story: Adventure in Arizona

A couple on a Trek Travel trip taking a selfie after getting engaged.

Valentine’s Day is a time for being with the people you love, and what better way to celebrate it than to share a heartwarming story of two lovebirds, Francis and Sara, who experienced the proposal of a lifetime.

Toronto natives, Francis and Sara, share a big passion for cycling and it’s something that has brought them closer together as a couple. Back in April of 2022, they decided to book a Trek Travel trip to sunny Arizona for November, so they could get out of the colder temps of Canada. In September, the idea of proposing to Sara on the trip popped into Francis’ mind, “After we started planning this trip, I decided that I was going to propose.” He said. So he bought the ring and reached out to Emily, their Trip Consultant, for help in planning the perfect proposal. Emily connected Francis with one of the guides, Jen, and together, they came up with a plan that would make Sara have no inkling that something special was about to happen.

“So from there, it became this huge thing where everyone was super excited and very helpful.” He said, “Jen and I were chatting and right away she sort of came out with a list of five suggestions. Some were on-bike ideas and some were off-bike, and through a couple of e-mails back and forth with guides’ Bev, Jen, and Dave, they got right to it.” The group started finding the best spots to propose along the route and would send photos back to Francis to get his input. “They even had sort of a mock proposal with Dave and Bev so I could get a sense of what it could look like. After seeing that, I thought it was perfect!”

It was finally time to head to Arizona. Francis and Sara arrived at CIVANA Wellness Resort and Spa on Monday, with the proposal planned for later in the week on Thursday. Over the next few days, Francis and the guides plotted out the details of how they were going to get Sara to the lookout point where the proposal was going to take place. “We came up with this plan where Dave would pull over one of the vans to the side of the road, saying that he was gesturing at a turnoff point, but that just happened to be where this lookout point was as well. Then earlier in the day I would tell Sara that something was wrong with my pedals so we could pull over and walk around while Dave “fixed” my bike. Bev would also be there with her camera and would suggest an awesome spot to take some photos because I know that Sara loves taking photos.” Francis would then lead her to the spot where the guides did the mock proposal and would get down on one knee.

Thursday morning rolled around and Francis could feel butterflies in his stomach. “I was having some anxiety about where I was going to put the ring box. It’s too bulky to put in the back of my jersey because Sara can see it. Then a couple of people sort of overheard me talking with one of the guides, and they all got excited and promised to keep quiet.” The ride started and the perfect plan sprang into action. “I had this mental countdown clock in my head because I knew what mile the pullover was going to be. So the whole ride became this countdown mile by mile until, oh my gosh, this is where it’s going to happen.”

Francis and Sara saw Dave in the distance and pulled off so he could “fix” Francis’ bike. Then with Bev’s suggestion, they began walking to the spot. “The walk was not that far, but maybe like 50 yards, and Sara was saying “Why do we have to go this far? There are so many other cactuses over here. I don’t understand. Can we just take a photo here?” I kept thinking that we have to keep going.” They quickly arrived at the spot. “It’s one of these things where the rest of it is a bit of a blur. I’m sure I blabbered out some nice words that expressed my love for Sara, then I got down on a knee.”

Sara was happily shocked and didn’t expect a thing all day. “It was all a very, very big surprise, even right up until the moment it was happening.” Sara said, “Like the whole story about how Dave wouldn’t have been parked there normally to mark the turnoff, so that was just a part of the ruse. Bev also just happened to be there with her big camera. I mean she’s just hanging out, taking pictures, because that’s what she does. So the moment he got down on one knee, I had no idea what was happening. There was a flutter of intuition that sat in me, but it was just a little flutter. I didn’t think it was happening on a Thursday in the middle of a bike ride, so I didn’t expect that at all!”

Then the newly engaged couple hopped back on their bikes and pedaled to the next rest stop. On their way in, Francis and Sara were met with another surprise as guides and fellow guests greeted them with champagne, cake, and a lot of cheering. “The rest of our group, who we only knew for four days became our little family.” She said, “It was such a unique thing to share with them, and they found it so special to be a part of it.”

Celebrations continued later that day and the rest of the trip. “Earlier on the trip,” Francis said, “I reached out to CIVANA and
told them about my engagement plans.” That night was a group dinner and Francis wanted to celebrate with their new friends while also doing something special for Sara. “The hotel recommended a local flower shop and let me call ahead so they could put a little arrangement together. Then they set up a table just for two. They also had a couple bottles of bubbly waiting for us, so that was a great way to celebrate the occasion afterward. The whole week was amazing. We had the best time, and the level of service that we experienced was so incredible. Dave and Jen were the champions of this whole experience. I couldn’t have done it without them!”

Looking back on the whole trip, Francis and Sara were delighted with how the proposal worked out. They said that, “The weekend before the trip, we spent two nights at the Grand Canyon and that’s a pretty spectacular place to propose.” Sara said, “Francis told me after the proposal that he was so anxious to get it over with so that he didn’t have to keep it a secret. If he had the ring on him at the Grand Canyon, he probably would have proposed right there.” Francis was relieved that he waited one more week, he said, “I was very glad that I didn’t propose there because it would have been spectacular, but it couldn’t have been more perfect than the way we had planned it.”

When they got back from Arizona they had one more surprise waiting for them. “Tania Burke sent us beautiful orchids and a nice card.” Sara said, “The resort also sent us a beautiful card, and all these thoughtful gifts meant a lot to us!” Francis and Sara have plans on visiting Mallorca this fall with Trek Travel to experience cycling by the Mediterranean Sea. As for the wedding, these travelers have a destination wedding in mind. “We’re going to have a wedding next January, probably in the Dominican. We were teasing after the proposal that [the other guests] were all invited to the wedding, and we hopefully will be able to plan a trip reunion sometime soon.”

Whether it be bikes, travel, or anything else, it’s the shared experiences that make love even stronger. “I think when it comes to biking,” Francis says, “it’s a constant reminder that you can do hard things when you push yourself. It’s probably cheesy, but it has strengthened our relationship together. All for the love of something that’s fun and feels good.”

We are delighted to be a part of Francis and Sara’s engagement and hope that their future is filled with love, happiness, and bicycles. Watch the video made by guest, Patrick O’Connor, who captured some moments from this special day.

What to know for your first bike trip

A cyclist on an ebike on an open road with rolling hills

Traveling for your first cycling vacation can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Read on for some of our most common guest questions answered from, “What do I pack?” to our top tips for traveling abroad.

“I can’t wait for my trip, but what do I pack?”
We get this question a lot. Which is why we’ve crafted a handy-dandy (and printable!) packing list tailored to what kind of trip you’re taking. Whether it be a luxury week away in Tuscany or a Ride Camp in Texas.

Pro-tip: It’s a great idea to pack your first day’s cycling clothes and riding gear in your carry-on bag so it’s easily accessible should there be any complications with your luggage.

“What safety measures are taken on trips?”
Great rides are safe rides, which is why we take safety seriously. Along with Flare-R front and rear lights included on every bike, we also make WaveCel helmets, Trek’s newest and safest innovation in helmet safety, available to guests on-trip. You can also read some of our cycling safety tips here before you go, and our guides will remind everyone about safety while on-trip.

We have also implemented enhanced standards on our trips to follow CDC guidelines related to COVID-19 safety.

“I have never been to this region before, what will the weather be like while I’m there?”
While we can’t predict all outcomes, you will find a general overview of what weather to expect on every trip page under the “Travel Details” tab.

“How do I know my bike on-trip will be a comfortable fit?”
When you book your trip, our Trip Consultants work with you to determine your size and fit. Bike sizes, measurements, and geometry can vary greatly from brand to brand, so we highly recommend stopping into your local Trek Bicycle shop for help with gathering accurate measurements. On the first day of your trip, your guides will adjust your bike to your comfort and preferences to ensure an excellent fit and are available to make adjustments throughout the week. Learn more about measuring your bike and fit here.

“I love the saddle on my bike at home, can I bring it?”
Absolutely. Although we provide men’s and women’s specific saddles on our trips, we know the most comfortable saddle out there is often the one you’re used to riding at home. Simply bring your saddle along with you and our guides will install it on your Trek Travel bike at the bike fitting before your first ride.

“How do I know where to meet my guides at the start of the trip?”
You can find all the arrival, departure, and meeting details under the “Travel Details” tab on every trip page, as well as recommendations for what to do and where to stay before and after your trip.

“What’s the support like? Do I have to ride all the miles? What happens if I get a flat?”
Your guides are there to accommodate riders of all types and abilities. With a typical Classic trip guide team consisting of one guide on their bike during the day’s route and another sweeping back and forth in the support van, you’re free to ride, sightsee, rest, or shuttle at any part of the route throughout the day. Got a flat or other mechanical issue? Guides will take care of it for you. No need to worry. Please note that support levels vary depending on trip style booked. For self-guided, ride camps, or semi-guided trips, please review your trip details for more information.

“How will I know where I’m going?”
Each bike is equipped with a Garmin Edge 1030 GPS computer pre-loaded with all the route options for the day. Once you select your route, you’ll navigate the route with the help of turn-by-turn directions. You can learn more about our Garmins here. In addition to the Garmin, you’ll have access to the routes on your phone through the Ride with GPS app.

What if I like to ride at a more leisurely pace than the rest of the group?
No need to worry. Each day of your bike tour is yours to discover and explore at your own pace based on what you want to see and do. Most of our vacations include multiple ride options each day to accommodate the different ability levels that regularly occur. Plus, if you feel like you need a boost, you can always reserve an e-bike. They’re a guest favorite and a whole lot of fun.

“Will there be laundry?”
Although laundry is available at many of the properties on our trips, we recommend confirming with your Trip Consultant for your specific trip. It’s also a great idea to pack a small amount of soap or detergent to do a quick kit wash in your room halfway through the trip.

What are your top tips for guests going abroad for the first time?
1. Make sure your passport is valid and you have the appropriate travel documentation. As a general rule, passports should have at least six months of validity when traveling internationally. This means that your passport’s expiration date should be at least six months after your final day of travel. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk with your Trip Consultant.

2. Invest in Travel Protection. Sometimes the unexpected happens. Whether it’s lost luggage, a medical emergency, or suddenly being unable to travel. Travel Protection will help mitigate financial loss in the event that things just don’t go as planned. Learn more about our offerings here.

3. Pack a power converter. Plug styles also differ from country to country, so it’s key to pack universal power adaptors and converters while traveling outside of the United States.

Book & Travel with Confidence

In the midst of uncertain times, our goal is to minimize the uncertainty of booking and traveling with us. With an enhanced cancellation policy and no-risk deposit, plus a host of added on-trip COVID safety protocols, we hope to offer you peace of mind from start to finish. But don’t just take our word for it. Hear the feedback we’ve received from guests about their booking, cancellation, and travel in these unprecedented times.

Crater Lake

From Chris on our Crater Lake & Cascades trip…

“In the time of COVID, this trip was still executed to the same high standards I have come to expect with Trek Travel. Yes, new processes are in place – temperature checks, masks, hand sanitizer, slightly different social hours and dining configurations. However, none of these got in the way of experiencing a “cycling vacation of a lifetime.” I feel we did not miss out on any part of the experience and am quite fortunate that the trip executed so well amid the current events. Well done!”

Ireland

From Bob who was booked on our Ireland trip…

“Priscilla and I were scheduled to do the Ireland trip in August. The cancellation policy removed the uncertainty and worry we had begun to feel. We were comfortable letting all this play out knowing you had given us some very generous options.”

San Juan Islands

From Sharon on our San Juan Islands trip…

“For anyone wanting to get out of their COVID rut, I highly recommend San Juan Islands. The adjustments made by Trek Travel for COVID-19 made the trip possible. In this incredibly difficult situation, the crew was very conscious and careful. Everyone in our group was respectful of the situation too. I saw very few people on the whole trip without masks. Additionally, the adjustments made for dining made everyone feel safe. But the best part was the outdoor cycling. Even COVID couldn’t diminish the riding experience. It was spectacular.”

Vermont bike tour

From Jenni on our Vermont trip…

“This was our first trip anywhere during COVID; I was a bit uncertain how the experience would be but was confident the right precautions would be taken by Trek Travel. I felt safe during the week, and it was so nice to go somewhere and do some things that felt more ‘normal.'”

Bryce and Zion Bike Tour

From Nancy on our Bryce and Zion trip

“I really appreciate Trek Travel’s flexibility with COVID. It made me very comfortable to know that I could cancel the day before the trip and still roll my funds over to another trip later. I also was very comfortable knowing that other guests could do the same–so they wouldn’t be tempted to show up anyway if they felt ill.”

Vermont bike tour

From Michele on our Vermont trip…

“Our trip was amazing! We felt very safe with all the COVID protocols in place, the outdoor dining options, and the attentiveness of the guides to guest safety. The fall colors were beautiful and the e-bike enhanced the enjoyment of each days ride. providing just enough assist on the hills. Looking forward to our next Trek Travel adventure!”

Bryce and Zion Bike Tour

From Karen on our Bryce and Zion trip….

“We had several calls with Trek prior to our trip because of COVID protocols. Our consultant, Bryna, was terrific. She was super knowledgeable and provided all the details to make us comfortable. Also, the pre-trip emails were excellent. They contained the information we needed to ensure we packed appropriately, had the right info, and had access to the app.”

Conquering Everest: Christian Notte

This year guest Christian Notte set out to climb more than the height of Everest while on trip during the Giro d’Italia. Not only did he achieve his goal, but he topped it by 5,942 feet.

Christian! We’re so excited to hear about what inspired this. But first, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself.
I’m 49 years old, and I live in Destin, FL. My undergraduate and graduate degrees are in Clinical Psychology from the University of Georgia and I now work within the Neuroscience Division of Johnson & Johnson. I’ve been extremely passionate about cycling since I was in middle school. At the age of 13, I cut yards to save money for my first Trek. Later, I experienced the Tour de France while I was an exchange student in Europe and after college I backpacked throughout France to view as many stages as I could. My passion for both Trek and cycling go back many years!

How did you find Trek Travel?
In 2012, I experienced some life challenges and decided to get back on the bike and do what I love–cycling. I spent years going to numerous bike shops to look at various bike manufactures and after significant consideration I decided to go back to my first bike experience–Trek.

In 2015, I received an e-mail regarding the Trek Travel Project One Experience. I immediately called your home office and spoke with Katherine Usher. She was extremely professional and excited for my opportunity to create my dream bike with a visit to Waterloo, Wisconsin. Not only did I do the design experience but I also did the pick-up experience! Hence, two adventures to your headquarters! After those phenomenal experiences, I signed up for the 2016 Tour de France and the 2017 Giro. Now I’m signing up for the 2018 Vuelta! My goal…to complete the three Grand Tours ALL with Trek Travel–Tour de France, Giro, and Vuelta! The Vuelta will be my 5th Trek Travel adventure!

Christian Notte Everest Challenge Trek Travel Cycling Vacations

What trips have you gone on so far?
2015 October Project One design
2015 December Project One pick-up
2016 Tour De France–Grand Tour number 1
2017 Giro d’Italia–Grand Tour number 2
2018 Vuelta a Espana–Grand Tour number 3
2019 Head to the Classics–Flanders and Paris-Roubaix

What keeps you coming back?
The people. The Trek Travel staff has been nothing short of incredible. They are extremely professional and absolutely FUN! Also, the concept of being able to travel the world via bike with the guidance and support of experienced cycling guides can’t be surpassed. After experiencing just one Trek Travel trip, every true cyclist will embrace another opportunity to see the world with Trek Travel.

Do you have a most memorable day on the bike?
Project One Experience. After years of planning, it’s the day I went to Waterloo, Wisconsin for my second visit to pick up my Trek Domane Project One bike. All available employees surrounded me and the stage. A curtain hid my bike. After an announcement, they slowly pulled the curtain back and there was my dream bike. I’ll never forget it!

Christian Notte Everest Challenge Trek Travel Cycling Vacations

When you aren’t riding bikes on trip or at home what are you doing?
I enjoy riding my Harley-Davidson, saltwater fishing and chill’n at the beach with my girlfriend.

Tell us a little about your quest to climb more than the elevation of Everest.
While flying back from my Trek Travel Tour de France adventure, I started to dream of my next goal. I decided on the 100th Anniversary of the Giro d’Italia. During a training ride to prepare for the mountains of the Giro, I decided I would exceed the height of Mount Everest. While in Italy, I needed additional climbing and asked my guide if I could ride additional mountains. Utilizing my Garmin, I tracked my progress every day to make sure I accomplished all 29,029 feet. After the first week I did it!

May 21st 2,474 feet, 22nd 8,225 feet, 23rd 5,007 feet, 24th 1,847 feet, 25th 10,190 feet, 26th 7,228 feet.

Total Christian Climbing= 34,971 feet
Mount Everest Height= 29,029 feet

What made you decide to tackle such a huge challenge?
I wanted to conquer Everest for the same reasons as the professional mountain climbers. The true sense of accomplishment and the fulfillment of a dream. When asked by the Trek Project One team what I wanted painted on my top tube, there was only one answer for me… “Carpe Diem”. I seized My Everest!

Christian Notte Everest Challenge Trek Travel Cycling Vacations

What challenge do you have on deck next?
I want to complete all three Grand Tours via Trek Travel. I’m excited about this year’s Vuelta, and I’m training very hard to get in the best shape I can to climb another Everest.

What are you looking forward to most at the Vuelta?
The people. I’m looking forward to meeting the guides and guests from all over the world. Cycling has changed my life including helping me develop incredible friendships that would not exist had it not been for my personal decision to get back on the bike.

Dream Trek Travel trip?
A Trek Travel dream trip would include the Australia Santos Tour Down Under for one week followed by one week touring New Zealand.

Christian Notte Everest Challenge Trek Travel Cycling Vacations

And just a few for fun…
What’s your winter training looking like?
I’m a big fan of having an indoor trainer. If you live in a climate where the weather makes cycling impossible and/or you have an active career a trainer is a must. Although I live in the Panhandle of Florida, the weather can get down to the 20s which can make an early ride a little chilly. After work, I may get home and it’s dark outside which can make training tough. Recently, I purchased a Tacx Neo trainer which has had a huge impact on my training. This allows me to train day or night regardless of weather conditions so when I’m able to do my road training, I’m much more effective. Although there is Zwift, I DVR-record numerous cycling events which helps the training be more enjoyable.

Cider or hot chocolate?
Best question thus far! A nice hot chocolate can make any cold day have a warm moment. Don’t forget the whipped cream!

Guest Story: Tour de France

“Before Kent and I left on our Trek Travel Tour de France bike tour, I had coworkers ask me if I was traveling for fun or if I was riding my bike. For us, it is one and the same. Riding my bike on the same roads that the pros would be riding was to be the vacation of a lifetime.

Our trip was a total of six days, five of which were spent riding through the breathtaking (literally and figuratively) French Alps. During those five days, most of us would climb a total of 30,000 feet over 184 miles. It was fantastic to know what the racers were experiencing when I watched them climb the 22 km up the Col du Glandon! I knew firsthand the difficulty of the last 2.5 km, which averages around 11% grade, of the Col de la Morte. Trek Travel set up a viewing of Stage 19 with an open bar and buffet, and I watched as the peloton rolled down the Col de la Croix de Fer and knew, from my own ride down that same road, how spectacular the views were.

On day number five, our group rode up Alpe d’Huez two hours prior to the actual peloton. The 21 switchbacks were jam-packed with Tour lovers from all over the globe. Each switchback seemed to have been taken over by a different country, the biggest and craziest of them all being switchback #7 where we were greeted by a sea of orange as, I believe, all of Holland had camped out and were eagerly awaiting the riders. My favorite part of that ride to the top of Alpe d’Huez is when our guide Jonathan’s playlist turned to “Living on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. It seemed to transcend language barriers, as everyone within earshot took up the chorus: “Ohh you’re halfway there. Ohhh living on a prayer!” Together, our group rolled across the actual finish line, and the people along the barriers cheered as if we were truly part of the Tour. I had a grin on my face that reached from ear to ear.

Ride across the finish line on a Trek Travel Tour de France bike tour

That night we got to meet one of the iconic figures of the cycling world. The man who coined the well-known (and while I was climbing, often repeated) phrase, “Shut up legs”: Jens Voigt. On TV he comes across as direct with a dry sense of humor, and that is exactly how he is in person. Jens spent an hour with the group, answering questions, taking pictures, and signing autographs. There were three teams staying at our hotel, and I had already snagged a picture with Andrew Talansky and Ryder Hesjedal and photo bombed Tony Gallopin. Some of the group had noticed André Greipel, aka The Gorilla, sitting in the bar. I convinced Jens to help me get a picture with him, seeing as how they are both German. Afterwards, Jens stayed behind to chat with Greipel and take selfies with him and his Lotto teammates while I immediately posted my prized picture to Facebook.

Trek Travel guest Marla met pro cyclists on a Tour de France cycling vacation

The sixth and last day of our adventure found us hustling off the mountain and on to Grenoble, where we boarded a train that would take us to Paris and to the final stage of the Tour de France. Trek had reserved the illustrious Automobile Club de France, which is located on the course about 500 meters from the finish. I felt a tad bit guilty as throngs of onlookers crowded behind barricades, while we sipped our drinks inches away from where the peloton was finishing the last stage. The most exciting moment came on the last lap as the sprinters flew past trying to get set up for that final push. After they passed where we were standing, we turned to where we could see the giant screen and got to watch as ‘The Gorilla’ won the most prestigious finale in cycling on the Champs-Élysées.

We finished the night and our Tour de France trip with a toast to our amazing guides and the experiences we would never have had without their help.”

Three Keys to World-Class Customer Service

Sure, as Trek Travel cycling guides we get paid to ride high-end road bikes in beautiful destinations around the world. But as the face of our company, we have a responsibility to provide world-class customer service. Trek Travel evaluates itself on the ability to wow our guests, so as guides we must be equipped to deliver uncompromising service.

Companies talk all the time about providing exceptional customer service. Executives far removed from the front lines make promises and commitments that may or may not be fulfilled. But from someone who works directly with customers from the time I wake up until the time I go to sleep each day, what exactly does it take to create an outstanding experience?

Here are three simple keys to customer service that I’ve learned from being a tour guide:

Three keys to world-class customer service with Trek Travel

1. Ask The Customer What They Want

It sounds simple, but you will never know what someone wants unless you ask. Don’t assume you know what each customer is looking for and know that there isn’t one catchall solution. We like to say, “It’s your day, you decide.” In order to create a perfect vacation, the details are important. It’s impossible for us to know how far you want to ride, the type of food you like to eat, or your favorite type of wine to share at dinner unless we ask. And those are exactly the type of details that create a world-class experience.

2. Give The Customer What They Want

Asking the customer what they’re looking for is inadequate unless we listen to the response. We’ve seen it all and we’re here to be fun and flexible. So when someone says they want to take a helicopter off the top of Alpe d’Huez or get married in the Tuscan countryside, we don’t stop until we’ve found a way to make it happen. Will it be the perfect solution every time? No. But there’s really no such thing as a crazy request.

3. Go Above and Beyond

Meeting needs isn’t enough. There are too many great companies that successfully fulfill customer requests and deliver on their promises. Unfortunately that’s where a lot of people stop. What makes good customer service great is the desire to go above and beyond in exceeding expectations. As cycling vacation guides, part of our responsibilities include waking up early to clean bikes, fill water bottles, oil chains, pump tires and set up snack tables. What takes the service to another level is doing all of this with a smile on our face no matter how little sleep we had the night before and placing a piece of chocolate on your seat just to ensure that your day starts in the best way possible. When it comes to customer service, little things go a long way.

“My lasting memory of my time with Trek Travel was for the kind ride staff and logistical support crew who left nothing to chance. In all my years of travelling with my bike I’ve rarely encountered such a completely professional service with seemingly effortless attention to the details, no matter how small.” – Guy Andrews, a cycling journalist, author, and founder of Rouleur Magazine

Meet Cricket Hile, featured Travel Agent

There is no better way to do business in travel than to experience the destinations yourself. Cricket Hile, a travel agent and bicyclist who has pedaled her way across her home state of Pennsylvania, sends her clients on our cycling vacations with the miles and memories from going on our trips herself in her toolbox. As a business partner and our guest, we are happy to introduce you to Cricket. Read about her travel experience and favorite vacation spots.

Name: Cricket Hile
Travel Agency: Travel Time Travel
Specialty European Travel
Years in the Business: 32

Tell us a bit about your background. What inspired you to pursue a career as a travel agent?

I started my career as a French teacher which led me to taking students to Europe. Eventually I decided I liked the travel part of it more than the teaching part!

Do you have an especially memorable client or story?

Several years ago four clients asked if they could go with me the next time we went to Paris; and of course, I said yes. We went to Paris as agent and clients. We returned as friends and have taken several trips together since then.

What is your favorite travel destination and what makes it unique?

Paris, France is my favorite destination. Between speaking French and going to Paris frequently I feel very comfortable there. However, I must say I love Italy, too, and I don’t speak Italian.

Based on your agency bookings, what are the three most popular destinations for 2015 and what is the must-do activity you recommend in each location?

Agency top three are …
1. Caribbean – Go snorkeling
2. Cancun – See the ruins
3. Disney World – Act like a child

My top three destinations and must-do activities are…

1. Paris – Have a picnic on the grounds of Versailles
2. Provence – Don’t miss the hill towns. It was Trek that really introduced them to me on the Mt. Ventoux trip. Best way to see them is on a bicycle!
3. Capri – Enjoy a Limoncello on the terrace of the Hotel Quisisana

Which Trek Travel trip is top on your bucket list and why?

That is difficult to answer because I have already done Provence (Mt. Ventoux) and the Classic Climbs of the Alps. However, at this point in my life, Croatia is at the top of my bucket list and I will do that in September. Several years ago my husband and I took a cruise that stopped in Korcula, Croatia. At that point, I said I needed to go back. Later when I saw that Trek offered a trip to Croatia, I decided it was definitely at the top of my list.

What is the most important piece of advice you give travelers before their trip?

I always tell clients to be open to change and expect that something is not going to be exactly as they had planned. The second thing I tell them is to not expect everything to be like it is at home. The third thing, and really the most important, is to smile when they are totally overwhelmed and confused. It will be okay.

Across the sea to Ireland

As one Irish actor told me in a Dublin pub…”I like the English. In fact my wife is English. That being said, I don’t care much for the British.” That barb was followed by a knowing Irish wink and another sip of beer.

Like Americans, the Irish also speak English. But it is a far different version of our flat twang, and it takes a while for Americans to develop an ear for the colorful lilt of the Irish tongue, especially in the beautiful green countryside, where the rural folks speak in a heavier local version of the language.

The fondest memory I have of Ireland occurred in the small town of Oranmore outside of Galway. It was when our large clan went to a nice, polite brunch of Irish salmon. Upon exiting the restaurant my father spied a thatched roof pub across the lane named McDonough’s. With a touch of the dramatic Dad said, “Follow me. I’ve been wanting to do this my entire life.” He proceeded to lead his wife and six adult children into the bar and announced with a broad smile, “We’re the Roaches of America and we’d like to buy the pub a round!”

There were some twenty folks in the bar, and we were witness to one of the great Irish rituals…the pouring of the Guinness. Twenty large pints were lined along the bar and then with ceremony rivaling a papal coronation, the bartender minded each glass so that the rich head of the brew would be allowed to rise and breathe for the perfect amount of time before being served.
